Fishifingers

Can someone tell me why fishifingers are often vilified as part of children's diets but not a fishcake or other breaded fish? Or are they all and I just miss that? Aibu to think a fishifinger is the same as a fish and any other breaded cod fillet?

Mmmm fishifinger sandwich with salad cream Grin

Friedspamfritters · 10/04/2019 18:50

YANBU. I mean if its deep fried with th loads of salt as part if a happy meal it's probably not great but I don't feel guilty about serving up fish fingers at home!

Friedspamfritters · 10/04/2019 18:50

And fishifinger sounds even better!

S1naidSucks · 10/04/2019 18:52

Actually, you just reminded me that there are some in the freezer. That’s my wee lassie’s dinner sorted. She’s not vegan. 😁

theconstantinoplegardener · 10/04/2019 18:54

I think fish fingers sometimes have quite a low percentage of fish in them (often less than 50% fish) and the remainder is the less nutritious breadcrumb coating, which is fried I think, before the fish finger is frozen, packaged and delivered to the supermarket. So fish fingers may be less wholesome than parents imagine, and certainly less nutritious than a fillet of fish. Also, they are often made using offcuts/lower quality remnants of fish, rather than the lean fillets you see on ice at the fishmongers.

However, all of these disadvantages also apply to fishcakes. Perhaps fishcakes have a better reputation because they are often homemade, so likely to contain higher quality ingredients.

I love fish fingers and they feature regularly on the Constantinople dining table, but I would suggest that you look for brands with a high fish content and buy the best quality ones you can afford.

Chippychipsforme · 10/04/2019 18:57

Ooh, I could just eat some fishifinges right now.

FiveLittlePigs · 10/04/2019 19:01

Fishifingers sound great! We have them sometimes if we've to be out sharpish after dinner. Yum.

WhereIsMyTVRemote · 10/04/2019 19:01

Just had them for dinner, purely for myself. Children had something else! Food of kings .

UtterlyUnimaginativeUsername · 10/04/2019 19:05

What's wrong with offcuts? Why are 'lower quality' bits lower quality?

YABU to the pp who eats them with salad cream. A Fishifinger(TM) sandwich must be on sliced pan and contain butterhead lettuce and mayo.

Andylion · 10/04/2019 19:07

I always thought they were the hotdogs of seafood.

thefinn · 10/04/2019 19:08

I don't get it either. The same is true in Finland, they're seen as somehow unhealthier than any other breaded fish. Go fishifingers. Grin

RomanyQueen1 · 10/04/2019 19:09

I think the nutritional value is the same, no difference.
I love fish fingers, was going to have them tonight but had tuna instead

Middledistancerunner · 10/04/2019 19:09

hotdogs of seafood Grin
Brilliant

iwantatattoo · 10/04/2019 19:18

Shouldn't that be hotidogs?

SarahAndQuack · 10/04/2019 19:18

I firmly believe one of the main reasons for having children is that you can justify having a freezer full of fish fingers, chicken nuggets, hash browns and those delicious potato cake thingies. Also ketchup. And you get to eat them all for lunch and say self-sacrificingly, 'oh, I made a really child-friendly lunch today'.

SummerHouse · 10/04/2019 19:23

We have a local cafe and I always get fishifinger chips and beans.

Fatted · 10/04/2019 19:23

YABU for eating breadcrumb fish fingers. Only battered fish fingers are acceptable. Same for a whole fish fillet. Breadcrumbs are for wimps. Grin

Andylion · 10/04/2019 19:26

My dad's fishcakes were saltcod, potato and onion, with a light coating of flour. There was nothing better for a hangover than a cold fishcake.

Starlight456 · 10/04/2019 19:26

I served fish fingers for tea tonight . Nom nom

WineGummyBear · 10/04/2019 19:27

My kids had them tonight too!

TinselAndKnickers · 10/04/2019 19:28

Fishifingers and hotidogs - deliciousnessGrin

MyKingdomForACaramel · 10/04/2019 19:29

Honest question... is there really such a thing as a crappy part of a fish? As in - with a chicken I get it - but surely a fish is a fish whatever end you eat?

ineedaholidaynow · 10/04/2019 19:30

I think the issue may partly be that many people only give children fishfingers, rather than others forms of fish, in the same way they give them chicken nuggets.

I am always amazed when I meet adults who have never eaten fish unless it is in the form of a fishfinger, or at a push, battered fish from the chippy. Even though we are an island nation most of our fish is exported. We love all types of fish in this house.

Fishcakes are normally made with a mixture of fish, along with other ingredients, so probably are seen as a different type of meal. Craving Thai fishcakes now

MyKingdomForACaramel · 10/04/2019 19:33

@sarahandquadk no children and tbh my freezer is 50% exactly as you describe.

donquixotedelamancha · 10/04/2019 19:35

Don’t ask me, I’m vegan

Why do some people feel the need to comment, even when they have no useful information?

I’m vegan

Never mind. Got it.
