£600 for prem economy

stopitandtidyupp · 10/04/2019 10:52

Looking at flights for the summer holidays approximately an 8 hour flight.

There is my daughter, partner and me. The difference between economy and premium for one way is £600. I can't decide whether to pay this or not. My partner says its a waste as £600 would be a great amount of spending money when we are there. I hate being hemmed in though but could manage as its only 8 hours.
I wouldn't book a cheap scruffy hotel room as I wouldn't enjoy it but this is just a seat.

I can't decide. Would you pay £600 for a few more inches?

Not for an 8 hour flight no.

SparePantsAndLego · 10/04/2019 10:54

It depends on the airline. For some it's worth it but for many there’s not much difference IMHO.

Purpletigers · 10/04/2019 10:55

You’re paying another £600 to rent a sofa for 8 hours . I wouldn’t pay it for a longer flight either .

Baxdream · 10/04/2019 10:55

For all three of you? I would for your return but it's relative to income I guess!

adulthumanwolf · 10/04/2019 11:00

Not for an 8 hour flight, it's not worth it.

I just did a 35 hour journey with a 13hr flight, a 7hr flight and a 4hr flight. That would be worth the updrade for the 13hr flight.

But for 8 hours I wouldn't bther.

Tink88 · 10/04/2019 11:03

Is that each? I usually pay around 500 extra each return with virgin for premium and it’s well worth it

ContinuityError · 10/04/2019 11:20

If it’s BA then I found economy seats more comfortable than premium economy - something about the shape of them and the height of the footrest just didn’t work for me at 5’6” tall. That was on an 11 hr flight (although it was a free upgrade so not like I’d blown money on being less comfortable).

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 10/04/2019 11:22

Nope Id rather always have the money

Crunched · 10/04/2019 11:26

Personally my priority is a spacious flight over accommodation upon arrival, but only you can justify what is a reasonable amount to you. Could you pay for extra legroom in economy rather than Premium Economy seats?
I have huge rage with recliners (discussed on here before) and pay for legroom on even a 40 minute flight - worth it for me.

Butterflyone1 · 10/04/2019 11:57

If you have the money then go for it. I like Premium Economy but my only annoyance is the fact often you can't move the arm rest. I like to lounge over my partner but you can't with Premium.

You tend to find the food quality is better as is the service and general feel of the cabin.

RuskBaby · 10/04/2019 11:58

Every time without fail. Those few inches are the difference between comfort and dreading the flights.

Tomtontom · 10/04/2019 12:01

Each or for the three of you?

If it's each, that's £75 an hour. It's not worth it. If it's for the three of you, I'd go for it.

FudgeBrownie2019 · 10/04/2019 12:03

DH and DS13 are both very long legged so any time we fly we make sure we get the biggest seats available because the discomfort of being hemmed in means their holidays begin in a little bit of grumpiness.

If you can afford it and like the extra space, do it. 8 hours is a long time to be uncomfortable.

Tomtontom · 10/04/2019 12:03

If it's only legroom you're bothered about, look at extra legroom seats. You won't be able to book the exit row if you have a child with you, but there should be other options such as the bulkhead.

TakeMe2Insanity · 10/04/2019 12:04

Also worth thinking about is access to toilets often in premium economy you use the economy toilets but can’t see the queue or the lights for them - discovered this when pregnant. So now we do business class or economy.

JustHereWithMyPopcorn · 10/04/2019 12:04

I've booked premium economy for our of us on a transatlantic flight this summer.

After 15 years of having kids on me or draped across / leaning on me (including another transatlantic flight) while my stupidly tall DH sits somewhere else with extra legroom, it's the thing I'm looking forward to about my holiday most of all!!

Kids are behind us in large seats also so hopefully they won't fight over space but if they do then DH can deal - I shall have noise blocking headphones on and a large G&T in my hand while I ignore everyone.

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 10/04/2019 12:06

I'm flying to Atlanta next month and have upgraded to Premium. It's worth it for me as by the time I'd paid for exit row seats and extra luggage for DH and I it didn't work out much more expensive.

Purpletigers · 10/04/2019 12:06

If you have to ask then you can’t afford it .

MirandaWest · 10/04/2019 12:07

How much are the ordinary economy tickets?

PinaColadaPlease · 10/04/2019 12:07

If it's with Virgin then yes it's worth it imo.

YourBasic · 10/04/2019 12:08

Basically if it effects how much you spend on holiday so different restaurants, less trips etc then no. If it doesn't then yes I love PE

stopitandtidyupp · 10/04/2019 12:10

Its £600 in total but only one way.

The food would not bother myself or dd as I am veggie and she isn't fussed at all.

Another thing is I think I would prefer a three in economy instead of a four in premium and sat next to a stranger. I can't see the availability until I fill in all of our details though.

Would prefer a better hotel though so maybe thats my answer.

I'd pay £50-ish maybe, for a night flight.
For a daytime flight it's not worth it, as you can always get up and walk about.

Judashascomeintosomemoney · 10/04/2019 12:11

General rule for us is 10hrs and above it’s worth it otherwise on balance I’d rather have the extra money to spend. Eg DH flying back from Beijing Friday (just a bit more than 10 hrs) and the extra space is worth it so he gets back and has rested so he can get on rather than waste another day recovering.

stopitandtidyupp · 10/04/2019 12:12

If you have to ask then you can’t afford it .

I don't think that's the case. Surely everyone wants value for money! Confused
