To think pavement parking should be banned

There's a government inquiry into pavement parking, you can submit comments here

www.parliament.uk/business/committees/committees-a-z/commons-select/transport-committee/inquiries/parliament-2017/pavement-parking-17-19/

I absolutely hate pavement parking - it's someone thinking their car not being scratched is more important than me and DD's lives. I live in an area of terraced streets and especially on bin days, you basically can't go out with a pram because it's so bad.

Anyone else want to comment for the inquiry? Maybe mumsnet could submit something on behalf of lots of people?

I understand this from both the drivers angle and the pedestrians. As a pedestrian I have had to walk in the road with my DS in the pram because of selfish pavement parkers. As a driver, I have been forced to park on the pavement before because the road is far too narrow for a car to safely pass due to another parked car opposite. I’ve never fully blocked the pavement though, some drivers do this and it really fucks me off.

I do wonder where the budget is coming from to implement a ban on pavement parking.

In these parts we can upload selfish/illegal parking up to a website and warnings and prosecutions follow. Works very well.

ivykaty44 · 09/04/2019 17:42

It’s the design of the cars that is a problem, design the car so that it doesn’t take up so much space. Most cars have 3 seats that are never used90% of the time. Reduce car size to slimline versions 1 in front and 1 behind and room for a bit of shopping 🛍

Many children are killed on pavements by drivers, never be forced to drive on a pavement it’s dangerous

Hearhere · 09/04/2019 18:11

I agree that smaller cars would be better, but cars are getting BIGGER
it seems like everyone has to drive a tank these days

Hearhere · 09/04/2019 18:12

I have trouble crossing the road these days cos I cant fucking see over parked cars much of the time, they're all so bloomin big (am 5ft 2)

I really hope you only need to appeal once if they get it wrong!

Vitalogy · 09/04/2019 18:30

Overheard white van man complaining this morning about a cyclists on the path that was having trouble getting past HIS van parked across the path, that said cyclist should be on the road! Never mind any pushchairs that needed to get by!

ForalltheSaints · 09/04/2019 18:33

If it is to be banned it needs proper enforcement. Not an £80 fine, but a court appearance and points on your licence.

LittleChristmasMouse · 09/04/2019 18:38

And before we ban it we have to implement properly affordable and reliable public transport and methods for people not able to use public transport.

ivykaty44 · 09/04/2019 19:01

And blind people can’t drive, have to use what public transport there is whilst the pavements are blocked for them to walk on by drivers who say they are entitled to park there as they have to drive

LittleChristmasMouse · 09/04/2019 19:03

So blind people don't ever live in a household that owns a car then? Oh right. I never knew that.

ivykaty44 · 09/04/2019 19:05

Tbh I’ve never seen a blind person driving

Vitalogy · 09/04/2019 19:08

Tbh I’ve never seen a blind person driving Only in the movies.

LittleChristmasMouse · 09/04/2019 19:09

Why do they have to drive in order to benefit from access to a car?

I work with a visually impaired man. They own a car that his wife drives. They still need to park that car somewhere.

ivykaty44 · 09/04/2019 19:13

So for blind people that don’t have access to a car, they have to wait for public transport to be adequate for sighted people’s needs before pavement parking, which obstructs them, can be banned

Alsohuman · 09/04/2019 19:17

Ffs! It doesn’t need a blanket ban. There are many roads where it isn’t an issue. It should be taken on a case by case basis. You know, like it is now.

There are people relying on food banks in the fifth richest country in the world and people are whinging about parking on the pavement. Get a grip, people.

LittleChristmasMouse · 09/04/2019 19:25

ivykaty44

Why are you being so obtuse?

Many of us are trying to walk the middle road - where there is room on pavements and roads need it let cars park on the pavement. Where roads are wide they park in the roads.

But then we get some frankly bizarre demands to ban all cars from ever parking on pavements even if that means people dependent on cars suffer serious hardship - just because.

Ban all cars if you like. But you can't do that until there is a realistic practical alternative which at the moment there isn't.

gauntletthrown · 09/04/2019 19:39

So anyone on a terrace street with limited parking has to get rid of their car? YABVU.

RollaCola84 · 09/04/2019 19:46

(*)JaneTheVirgin

If 'elsewhere' doesn't exist, don't buy a house with no where to park a car then complain about it.(*)

I'm not complaining, you're telling me I have find somewhere else and people are telling you why that isn't practical. I've just parked 2 wheels up on the pavement outside my house as everyone with a car does. There's plenty of space on the pavement and the road is still two full lanes wide. Where I live is streets and streets of Victorian / Edwardian terraces. Everyone parks just up on the pavement, parking on the road would be worse.

And no I wouldn't like the 150 year old architecture and nearby park to be demolished for a multi storey car park.

RollaCola84 · 09/04/2019 19:48

What needs to be banned (or current rules enforced) is parking like a twat.

ivykaty44 · 09/04/2019 19:49

Many of us are trying to walk the middle road

If you think this is appropriate wording after the video I put up with the blind pedestrians walking in the road - so go and give your head a wobble 🙄

LittleChristmasMouse · 09/04/2019 19:52

ivykaty44
And if you think that I watch videos posted by randoms on the internet and when I'm away from wifi access to boot, then give your own head a wobble.

squee123 · 09/04/2019 20:05

One point I don't think has been mentioned yet is that for many wheelchair users it isn't as simple as just going into the roadand nipping round the car. They will likely need a dropped kerb to get both off and back on the pavement. This means that they may have to retrace their route when they come across a parked car and then go down the road for a long time past the car until they come across the next dropped kerb. That is a lot of time in the road, particularly when you can't necessarily nip quickly out the way of traffic

RollaCola84 · 09/04/2019 20:17

()squee123() true but houses without driveways are highly unlikely to have a dropped kerb. The only drop kerbs on my road are around pedestrian crossings where you're not allowed to park anyway.
