To ask when did your child stop playing with toys?

My dd is seven and in year 2 and loves imaginative play with dolls and play figures or whatever you give her, she's always making characters and stories. I was talking to a couple of mums at the school gate whose children are in dd's year and they said how hard it is to buy birthday presents for their children because they don't play with toys any more. I felt genuinely surprised, it did seem quite young to grow out of toys. I'm sure I was still playing with toys when I was ten! I'm just obviously letting dd do what she likes but I am a little curious as to whether it's something they do grow out of a bit more quickly nowadays.

Plus MIL has no outdoor space so u less she takes them to the park, which she has done twice in eight years of visiting, they are caged animals.

No wonder they don’t want to visit!

Solopower1 · 08/04/2019 18:15

Actually, one of the reasons that they don't often have to occupy themselves is that they all go to really great after school clubs, on top of which they have so many out of school activities (Brownies, gym club and the like), which they benefit enormously from. I suppose you can't have everything ...

Farmerswifey12 · 08/04/2019 18:17

About 11 was when the last of her toys were left to collect dust I think

Solopower1 · 08/04/2019 18:29

Just seen your post 1633! [grins]

No, I just mean that I don't want to organise all their activities ...

And, for your information (because you've got me riled, and I think I have to stand up for myself here and blast your stereotypes out of the air) - my grand children still love coming to see me! We do all sorts of things, but we don't have devices.

1633tonow · 08/04/2019 18:32

Of course you don’t have devices, none of that new dangled rubbish eh?

It’s like book burning but a different century!

1633tonow · 08/04/2019 18:32

Fangled not dangled Grin

DinosApple · 08/04/2019 18:44

Mine still like marble run, Barbie's, Lego, magic tracks and gravi trax at 8 & 9. They also love Mario and their tablets and playing out with their friends.

Solopower1 · 08/04/2019 18:49

I love my kindle, 1633. I just don't use it when I'm with my grandchildren. Oh and I can work my own smart phone. It has apps and everything. I can do emojis too. Wink

Siameasy · 08/04/2019 18:55

I was still playing with Sindies and MLP at 13 too. In secret!
My and DH’s Nieces 11-15yrs play with DD’s toys when they come round it’s so sweet

Blompitude · 08/04/2019 19:00

Think my DDs stopped playing with dolls a couple of years ago, at 11 and 9.
They'll play the odd board game in the holidays, usually with me.
Yesterday I found them playing a BTS-themed Happy Families!

ChidiAnnaKendrick · 08/04/2019 19:07

My Y2 doesn’t really play with toys much - except Lego. He adores Lego! He sometimes plays with cars. He has ASD though and has never been that interested. He does love to play with his sister though.

DS1 & 2 are 11 & 12 and never play. Still love Lego Grin

mama1980 · 08/04/2019 19:31

My ds1 at 11 plays still with Lego, dinosaurs etc. Him and his friends still love imaginative play.
But we don't have technology so no consoles, iPad etc. I think that makes a huge difference.

LadyMonicaBaddingham · 08/04/2019 19:31

My 14 and 12 year old still play, mainly with Warhammer, Lego, Dungeons & Dragons. They also both have an extensive collection of cuddly toys (Daleks, Mario, Emojis, Diseases)

1633tonow · 08/04/2019 19:32

😂 at the no consoles oneupmanship!

hazell42 · 08/04/2019 19:36

My son stopped playing with toys when he was about 8. My daughter when she was about 18.
Different kids. Different ages.
Doesn't matter as long as they are happy
My son preferred games like football with his friends to toys

Supercuts · 08/04/2019 19:37

mama1980

You have no technology? But you have a post from 2014 saying your 16 year old comes in and plays on the iPad 😁.

Supercuts · 08/04/2019 19:43

And in 2012 you were waxing lyrical about the technology you had got Christmas!

No point making things up on Mumsnet to try and get one over on people.

mama17 · 08/04/2019 20:05

@RicStar my daughter is the same! She's never really played with toys and I've wasted a fortune on buying them to keep trying! She loves dressing up, role play and board games. My son plays with toys and has a much better attention span.

Stitchosaurus · 08/04/2019 20:29

DS started to lose interest when he was only 6 because he became obsessed with football instead. He’s 7 now and very rarely plays with toys, which does make me sad as I feel it’s too young to stop! He uses little figures in his football matches sometimes though, love listening to that.

He had a friend over on Friday who walked into his room and said “why do you have toys? Who has toys these days?” I thought that was horrible.

No consoles here and I’ve always encouraged solo play but the lure of football trumps all.

Bigearringsbigsmile · 08/04/2019 20:40

Supercuts. ..trawling other people s pAston posts is a bit creepy. .

1633tonow · 08/04/2019 20:47

Bigearringsbigsmile Why? She lied. People know she lied, she talks about her iPad a lot. Why do you want to cover it up?

Supercuts · 08/04/2019 20:48

I know the poster from the tennis threads, I only ”trawled” to make sure I had the right one.

Theladylady · 08/04/2019 21:03

Caught my 19 year old having a fiddle with his action man two weeks ago 😂he just has the one action man
Told me he was cleaning it 😂😂😂😂

FrenchyQ · 08/04/2019 21:10

My son is 12 and still loves to play with his Transformers and Lego

JK2012 · 08/04/2019 21:12

DS is 8 and unfortunately doesn’t play with many toys but he does have autism and prefers other things.

As for me, I played with Barbies until I was about 12-13 I’m sure. Loved them and it’s had no lasting affect on me!
