To ask when did your child stop playing with toys?

My dd is seven and in year 2 and loves imaginative play with dolls and play figures or whatever you give her, she's always making characters and stories. I was talking to a couple of mums at the school gate whose children are in dd's year and they said how hard it is to buy birthday presents for their children because they don't play with toys any more. I felt genuinely surprised, it did seem quite young to grow out of toys. I'm sure I was still playing with toys when I was ten! I'm just obviously letting dd do what she likes but I am a little curious as to whether it's something they do grow out of a bit more quickly nowadays.

My dd is 8 next week and she does have an iPod and an iPad but she still loves playing . Most of her presents are LOL related apart from her bike.
She is currently playing teachers with her toys in her room which is lovely .
It does seem most of her friends get craft sets etc rather than dolls

Actually my entire office had great fun playing with a £1 plastic toilet full of flarp putty yesterday, and our average age must be about 33.

I still like my toys in my late 30s Grin

DS(8) is at the threshold where he could disappear into the void of Minecraft for evermore. Tech time is limited and at weekends the firestick gets deactivated on the TV so the DCs have to find some way to entertain themselves until evening time. There is a bit of whinging for a few minutes, then before you know it there's the sound of Lego rustling or scrabbling in cardboard boxes. They're very much at the shooting each other with sticks stage.

It's not that screens are inherently terrible, just what are they not doing/ developing while they are on them. For example while I am writing this, my laundry goes unfolded 😂

My son is 7 and doesn’t really play with figures any longer. He’s either active and playing football, tag, or on the trampoline, or else he likes to draw and read. He also plays FIFA on the iPad, but only in short bursts.

My DD was 10 last November and got playmobil for Christmas, plus Hary Potter Lego. She still plays loads of imaginary games with Lego & playmobil.
The big dolls & Barbies have gone though - 2bh, she was never really that into the barbies & her niece loves them so they have all gone to her.
DD does spend a lot of time on xbox as well, but asked for playmobil for Easter. Its eggs & books & DVDs for Easter...but only cos I'm not made of money!

DS is 8 and unfortunately doesn’t play with many toys but he does have autism and prefers other things.

As for me, I played with Barbies until I was about 12-13 I’m sure. Loved them and it’s had no lasting affect on me!

Bigearringsbigsmile Why? She lied. People know she lied, she talks about her iPad a lot. Why do you want to cover it up?

DS started to lose interest when he was only 6 because he became obsessed with football instead. He’s 7 now and very rarely plays with toys, which does make me sad as I feel it’s too young to stop! He uses little figures in his football matches sometimes though, love listening to that.

He had a friend over on Friday who walked into his room and said “why do you have toys? Who has toys these days?” I thought that was horrible.

No consoles here and I’ve always encouraged solo play but the lure of football trumps all.

@RicStar my daughter is the same! She's never really played with toys and I've wasted a fortune on buying them to keep trying! She loves dressing up, role play and board games. My son plays with toys and has a much better attention span.

And in 2012 you were waxing lyrical about the technology you had got Christmas!

No point making things up on Mumsnet to try and get one over on people.

You have no technology? But you have a post from 2014 saying your 16 year old comes in and plays on the iPad 😁.

My son stopped playing with toys when he was about 8. My daughter when she was about 18.
Different kids. Different ages.
Doesn't matter as long as they are happy
My son preferred games like football with his friends to toys

My 14 and 12 year old still play, mainly with Warhammer, Lego, Dungeons & Dragons. They also both have an extensive collection of cuddly toys (Daleks, Mario, Emojis, Diseases)

My ds1 at 11 plays still with Lego, dinosaurs etc. Him and his friends still love imaginative play.
But we don't have technology so no consoles, iPad etc. I think that makes a huge difference.

My Y2 doesn’t really play with toys much - except Lego. He adores Lego! He sometimes plays with cars. He has ASD though and has never been that interested. He does love to play with his sister though.

DS1 & 2 are 11 & 12 and never play. Still love Lego Grin

Think my DDs stopped playing with dolls a couple of years ago, at 11 and 9.
They'll play the odd board game in the holidays, usually with me.
Yesterday I found them playing a BTS-themed Happy Families!
