to ask...where do you put your used tampons at home?

Okay, I'll fess up...for years I've flushed them [blush. I've never thought too much about the enivronmental impact as I thought it was the same as loo roll, but have recently become aware that I definitely need to stop.

But I don't like the thought of them lingering around the house. We don't have a bin in the bathroom as it seems disgusting somehow, and our only bin is in the kitchen. It seems beyond skanky to put soiled tampons in there. I just wondered what other women do - do you put them straight in the bins outside, or are you happy to have bloody tampons in the bins inside for days? Not sure if I am being OCD about this (probably), but feel puzzled as to the best way to dispose of them?

@stucknoue even flushable ones are not flushable. Same goes for flushable wipes. We've had info leaflets from WelshWater come through our door saying this. I still don't understand how companies are allowed to lie about it on their products because it is very misleading.

Meandmetoo · 07/04/2019 19:07

"No bathroom bin? So what do you do with bathroom waste? Cotton pads, empty product bottles, floss? Do you walk across your bedroom/landing carrying them to the nearest bin? That's yak!"

I carry mine across to the kitchen.

Girliefriendlikescake · 07/04/2019 19:08

My godmother doesn't have a bathroom bin and I find it really awkward smuggling a wrapped up soiled sanitary towel downstairs and into the kitchen bin without someone noticing. I think it's pretty selfish not to consider your guests may want to put personal hygiene products somewhere discreet tbh.

I have a little peddle bin in the bathroom and the downstairs loo, it's never smelt and gets emptied when it's full once a week.

Sparklingbrook · 07/04/2019 19:10

I think it must be most unpleasant and awkward for visitors when there's no bathroom bin.

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 07/04/2019 19:11

Cotton pads, empty product bottles, floss? Do you walk across your bedroom/landing carrying them to the nearest bin? That's yak!

So now everything in the bathroom is yuck?

As an aside, my kitchen is two steps from the bathroom (the joys of a matchbox flat) so the bin is more than near enough.

Raspberrytruffle · 07/04/2019 19:16

In a nappy bag then in the bin, never flushed as it's stupid and causes drain problems

CielBleuEtNuages · 07/04/2019 19:23

I wrap in a bit of toilet paper and into lidded bathroom bin. Bin is lined with bread bag so no extra plastic waste.

But I only use tampons when swimming. Other than that its washable pads.

Makemeaname · 07/04/2019 19:30

In a shared house so no bathroom bin, I put them in my bedroom bin which has a lid. I'll tend to wrap in the wrapping from the next one if possible, but it doesn't smell and no-one can see it. And no extra waste since that packaging would need binning anyway.

BertieBotts · 07/04/2019 19:32

We have tiny bins in the bathroom so they get emptied often. I line them with those clear bags you get loose fruit and veg from the supermarket in.

Slimmer2018 · 07/04/2019 19:33

Definitely use a moon cup (or I use an organi cup)

faw2009 · 07/04/2019 19:33

My mum taught me to wrap used pads in newspaper before throwing them in the bin. Or alternatively, put a layer of paper over it in the bin - does stop the smell.

RedPanda2 · 07/04/2019 19:34

Bathroom bin wrappedin a bit of loo roll. I don't care a jot if anyone sees them

megletthesecond · 07/04/2019 19:35

Wrap in loo roll and put in bathroom bin.
I started doing it over 20yrs ago.

strangerthongs · 07/04/2019 19:42

flush and nope, not changing

Did try a mooncup, it wasn't comfortable at all and not easy to insert.

I use lilets tampons....they look flushable to me?

Belenus · 07/04/2019 19:43

In the bath room bin, which is lined and lidded. Have never flushed them. Why would you put something designed to create a blockage into a drainage system?

Sparklingbrook · 07/04/2019 19:47

Just because they 'look' flushable doesn't mean they are or you can.

This from my local water company-

We clear over 45,000 blockages every year and around 70% of them are caused by the wrong things being put down the sink and toilet.
It costs us over £10 million every year to regularly clean sewers to remove wipes, sanitary products, fats and oils to prevent blockages.

wonkylegs · 07/04/2019 19:47

Wrap them in tissue and put in the bathroom bin, regularly empty the bathroom bin.
How do people not have a bathroom bin?

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 07/04/2019 19:47

Are they made out of toilet paper? Then no they're not.

Let's face it a lot of things are flushable...at least once. (Or if you're brave enough) That doesn't mean they should be flushed.

hatemyhairhun · 07/04/2019 19:51

I mean it’s just a tampon - not ‘skanky’ etc. You’re being dramatic.

Can’t you place it inside the wrapping of the fresh tampon? If not, just wrap it in tissue. No one should be rooting in your trash anyway, so no big deal if it’s in the kitchen bin - it’s hardly going to contaminate your food is it?

I personally have a bathroom bin, my bathroom isn’t disgusting though lol. Loads of normal things go in there like packaging for toothpaste etc, makeup remover wipes, floss etc. Couldn’t imagine having to traipse to the kitchen every time I needed to throw something away.

NannyR · 07/04/2019 19:51

If they were actually flushable, as in breaking down like loo roll, they would disintegrate whilst you were using them.

myrtleWilson · 07/04/2019 19:52

I can kind of understand that some people may be late to the news that tampons aren't flushable even the ones that "look flushable" Hmm but why would you defiantly declare yourself a continued flusher even when confronted with this breaking news like strangerthongs - it just defies logic.

MrMeSeeks · 07/04/2019 20:06

i flush and will carry on doing so
The whole if i can’t see the problem and it doesn't hurt me thrn i’ll just carry on doing it Hmm
I’m guessing as soon as they get a blockage things may change.
I can understand not knowing ( i was also told decades ago to flush but to know and just carry on...

Bringbackthestripes · 07/04/2019 20:07

I use lilets tampons....they look flushable to me?

It even says on the back of the box to not flush them and to put them in the bin.

MrMeSeeks · 07/04/2019 20:07

I use lilets tampons....they look flushable to me?
Hmm so do many things, doesn’t mean they are.

VanGoghsDog · 07/04/2019 20:07

Those of you who don't have bathroom bins and say you don't have guests - correlation?
