to ask...where do you put your used tampons at home?

Okay, I'll fess up...for years I've flushed them [blush. I've never thought too much about the enivronmental impact as I thought it was the same as loo roll, but have recently become aware that I definitely need to stop.

But I don't like the thought of them lingering around the house. We don't have a bin in the bathroom as it seems disgusting somehow, and our only bin is in the kitchen. It seems beyond skanky to put soiled tampons in there. I just wondered what other women do - do you put them straight in the bins outside, or are you happy to have bloody tampons in the bins inside for days? Not sure if I am being OCD about this (probably), but feel puzzled as to the best way to dispose of them?

I use lilets tampons....they look flushable to me?

So do I. They’re not flushable. In fact it says on the box “wrap and dispose of in household waste”.

Jolonglegs · 07/04/2019 20:20

Wrap it in toilet paper and drop into bathroom bin, which is emptied each day. Looking forward to not needing to do this when the time comes!

CakeNinja · 07/04/2019 20:25

Sparkling, I’m surprised condoms are not on that poster! Many are not biodegradable.

Nicknacky · 07/04/2019 20:27

The closest I get to a guest who needs to change a tampon is my pal that comes over occasionally, we usually meet out. I’m not buying a bin on the rare chance she might need it.

I don’t have overnight guests apart from my dad two nights a year.

I don’t need a bin.

BuggerOffAndGoodDayToYou · 07/04/2019 20:34

I use lilets tampons....they look flushable to me?

I use them too.... have never flushed one in my life (and now beginning the menopause). Flushing ANYTHING other than pee, poo & paper (and vomit) is beyond selfish. Read your packaging and educate yourself.

WitchesGlove · 07/04/2019 20:48

Following, as I have wondered this too.

A housemate I used to have was really angry with me for putting used towels/ tampons in our bathroom bin.

I have no idea how she knew anyway, as I always wrapped them up in paper etc, she must have rifled through the bin!

She put a sign on it and demanded that I change the bin immediately, she was a bitch though in other ways!

WitchesGlove · 07/04/2019 20:49

What’s wrong with putting them in a bathroom bin (lidded) or any other bin if wrapped up?

You’d have to look through it to see what it was!

Susiesoop · 07/04/2019 21:08

I use a moon cup, amazing. No leaks, comfortable and can even run long distances and swim without any issue. Haven't used a tampon in ages however before managed to wrap in tissue and place in a bin (bathroom bin, but even a kitchen bin if necessary) without anyone needing medical treatment, terrible odours overcoming the UK or whatever other dreadful horrors might lurk to overtake those of a delicate nature. The bin, house inhabitants and even the toilet brush lived to tell the tale. Feeling as though others fumegate the house after every period 😂.

whitehalleve · 07/04/2019 21:10

I also flush and always will.

Sparklingbrook · 07/04/2019 21:13

Sounds like something you could put on a badge whitehalleve, or maybe 'Flusher and Proud'. Hmm

PickAChew · 07/04/2019 21:14

This from my local water company. Dwaine Pipe is on the side of all their vans and has been for years, so anyone like the Pp who clearly hasn't got the message must have been leaving under a rock, all this time.

Or maybe under a fatberg.

Cryalot2 · 07/04/2019 21:18

Use a small pedal bin lined with bio degradable liners , wrap in loo roll and put in that.
Given that we were always responsible for our own sewers, it taught me a few lessons when I came to live here.
Prior to that I flushed all sorts down the loo.opps

ethelfleda · 07/04/2019 21:18

Do the people of mn recommend a mooncup or reusable pads?
I like the idea of a mooncup but not emptying it out at work? The pads seem more discrete for this purpose but not overly keen on wearing pads (usually a tampon user but want to stop using them for obvious reasons)

Floralnomad · 07/04/2019 21:20

To all the idiots who still flush just keep in mind that one day you may suffer a blockage at home and imagine how embarrassing it will be when the plumber has to remove all your decaying tampons .

PinkSparklyPussyCat · 07/04/2019 21:24

@VanGoghsDog I wish I could feed tinned cat food but he won't eat it and even if he did, none of the better brands come in tins. I'm not feeding him crap so I can recycle the tins.

Regarding visitors, I really don't think my lack of a bathroom bin is a factor in my lack of visitors! There's no way anyone is staying overnight and we tend to go to our friends or go out for a meal. (And before anyone moans about me not having friends round but going there, they have children and we don't so it's more practical to go to them for the evening).

SnuggyBuggy · 07/04/2019 21:29

This is why I rarely use them. I can't flush now I know about the effect on plumbing/the environment and no matter how much toilet paper I wrap them in it leaks. Yuck.

I was once staying somewhere with no bin, had to remove a tampon and even though I used a shit ton of toilet paper it still leaked and left a bloody mark on the inside of my handbag.

MsTSwift · 07/04/2019 21:39

Been using mooncup for 12 years now never looked back. Best product no grim soggy tampons sitting in bins seriously if you can get your head round it they do much better

icannotremember · 07/04/2019 21:45

I use a cup. On the very rare occasion I have for whatever reason used a tampon, I wrap it up and put it in the bin. My parent's house when I was growing up had old pipes and drains that were so prone to blockage my dad had his own set of drain rods, the idea of putting anything other than loo roll down the toilet would have been madness, so I've never flushed them.

itsbetterthanabox · 07/04/2019 21:56

Nothing can flush down the loo but toilet paper.
I put my pads and tampons in the bathroom or kitchen bin if I use them- mostly use a cup now.

Grimbles · 07/04/2019 22:01

I wrap in loo roll and put them in the bathroom bin which is emptied every couple of days. A spray of bin fresh or zoflora and it's good to go.

elliejjtiny · 07/04/2019 22:05

I don't use tampons but I have a nappy bin in my bathroom for used pads, nappies etc.

Theladylady · 07/04/2019 22:08

Nappy sacks then bin

Peopleshouldread · 07/04/2019 22:09

Don't flush them! They clog up sewage systems. The majority are not biodegradable.
I wrap mine in loo paper and put them in a lined bathroom bin.
Then put in general rubbish. And rinse the bin in vinegar and bicarb soda with some eucalyptus oil.

We live with a septic tank, and have to accost all female guest to tell them not to out them down the loo. Most don't listen. The sheer number of times we have had to remove the initial filter on our septic and fish out used tampons is just wrong. So gross.

Wetdogloveshubert · 07/04/2019 22:24

I'm appalled at all of the women saying they flush, and won't stop. It's this activity which puts everyone's water bills up, and helps ruin our waterways. Shame on you all. Not even ignorance to hide behind.

le42 · 07/04/2019 22:47

Totally off on a tangent but....

To all the mooncup users... sorry for stupid questions but I'm so ignorant about the product, do you empty it down the toilet and do you need to wash between empties? Ie in a public place
Recently had a baby and finding tampons uncomfortable (period started at 6 weeks 🙄)
