I do laugh about this.
I get a man saying from credit investigations calling.
So I ask him if he got up this morning and is proud of how he was going to scam people, how he can face his family knowing what his job involved..
He told me to F off and hung up...

My child is laughing at me..

I was nearly suckered in by one , I was in the middle of a car insurance claim, but when they mentioned my injury , I knew they were scamming ( I wasn't in the car , I saw my car being hit )
When I asked them for details ( yes I am persuing a claim and you seem to know a lot about it , can you give me the date to verify) they got the arse .

I had one who ticked just about every box on the list. Calling from "the Windows company". Told me I didn't know what I was talking about when I told him I had 4 windows devices at the time (true) all of which ran different versions of windows (also true), and that if there was an issue they could tell me which version the infected device was running. When I told him I was an IT professional (also true, but not a techy) he accused me of lying.

Started to swear at me then when I suggested that his employers wouldn't like him talking to a customer in that language if he really was legit, told me he was going to fuck me with his long dick. When I asked him if he felt ashamed saying things like that to a grandmother (I'm not btw), and asked if he would like someone to talk like that to HIS grandmother, he started to go into more & more detail & kept repeating that phrase - hence why it's stuck in my head. I was getting bored so I put the phone down, and he kept trying to call back non stop for well over an hour (sigh).

I'm registered with the TPS, and been told out & out lies like "you have to re-register every 6 months" or "you can't register a mobile", and has the caller very offended when I tell them to check the easily google-able details about it.

Missmarplesknitting · 06/04/2019 18:15

I find trying to convert them to religion helps.

"Yes I know about the claim from the accident dear, but that's not important. What's far more important us your mortal soul. Have YOU been saved, dear?"

They usually hang up 😁

slipperywhensparticus · 06/04/2019 18:23

I had a Microsoft scam call he told me he works for the because he earns around 20,000 a tear and so he can have a woman to share his bed in the morning I called him all sorts of names for discussing his sex life on the phone Blush I really was Ill that day

je4852 · 06/04/2019 18:33

I just say to them, 'Before we start, I have to let you know this call is being recorded'. Phone goes straight down.

acatcalledjohn · 06/04/2019 18:43

The most recent ambulance chaser asked me what happened in the accident.

I told him I was playing with my toy cars, you know, those scalextric type things. I was going too fast and lost control on a bend, crashing the car.

He thought I was very rude for wasting his time Grin

These people are fair game. In the past I have:

  • Crashed at St Peter's Gate
  • Given my address as St Peter's Gate
  • Been dead and very impressed with the signal up in heaven
  • Been in a car with 76 passengers (simple: open the door, first person goes in, followed by the second, third, fourth, then close the door after the 76th person has gotten in)
woollyheart · 06/04/2019 18:51

Some good accidents!

I've replied in a very creaky old sepulchral voice 'yes, I think you are right, I have been injured'. When he asked the date, I said 'I'll have to think - I think it was 1864 - does that sound right?'

Yougotdis · 06/04/2019 19:01

I’m not allowed to drive for medical reasons. So I find the calls saying you’ve been in a road accident that wasn’t your fault particularly galling (just for being precious about the driving reasons. ) but lately I’ve been enjoying telling them that I haven’t been in a road accident that wasn’t my fault because I deliberately ran the fucker over. I really enjoy that. It’s the little things sometimes.

YukoandHiro · 06/04/2019 19:03

Just hang up. Why be an arsehole with them?
I used to do this as a student and when people gave the moral crusade I used to sit there and run through my rent/weekly outgoings, student loan and hours available to work and ask them how else legally I was expected to be able to make it through university. Usually shut them up.

goose1964 · 06/04/2019 19:06

We have sky shield, it automatically cuts off bots and live callers need to have their calls accepted. Not had a cold call since we had it installed

@YukoandHiro Did you work as a cold caller for a legitimate business or did you call people to try and defraud them?

If you were part of an illegal scam or calling people who had opted out of calls, you deserve what you get. I have to calm my aged parent down frequently due to callers like this. We have got BT Call Protect for her, and it is a bit better now.

acatcalledjohn · 06/04/2019 19:18

Just hang up. Why be an arsehole with them?

Because it stops the cunts from scamming a more gullible person. I consider it my moral duty.

Coffeebean76 · 06/04/2019 19:20

You used to scam people when you were a student?!! Why not get a job in a bar like everyone else.

MuttsNutts · 06/04/2019 19:24

If I can be arsed I sometimes ask them for the first and third digit of their security PIN. That confuses the jiggery out of them and some even try guessing random numbers, to which I reply, “No, sorry” and hang up.

LynetteScavo · 06/04/2019 19:31

I was merrily chatting to a scammer once when the cat brought a mouse in.

I screamed and screamed and hung up. I actually feel a bit sorry for the scammer. They probably think I was murdered or something.

Isleepinahedgefund · 06/04/2019 19:34

This has given me a good chuckle this eve, can't wait for my next scan call!

I've had experience of dealing with these companies in a professional capacity The thing is, the people working there are well aware that it's a scam. They move from boiler room scam to boiler room scam - they make very good money taking advantage of people. This also extends to the people who scam vulnerable people into buying fake shares and things. They are not innocent and just doing a job, they are complicit in the scam and prepares to turn a blind eye to the harm they do in order to make money. Don't feel sorry for them.

SoupDragon · 06/04/2019 19:47

ask them how else legally I was expected to be able to make it through university

Work in a supermarket? Bar? Scamming people or getting them to ankle a fake injury claim is a shit thing to do.

BackinTimeforBeer · 06/04/2019 19:51

I kept asking them to repeat themselves and like my teenagers they get really pissed off and slam down the phone.Hmm

AnneElliott · 06/04/2019 20:03

I do this too - often they're not sure what decapitate means!

And the benefit of going to a multi cultural school is that I can swear in a number of Asian languages. I go through my repertoire until I get the right one. Then they often tell me I am a naughty lady and put the phone down!

SmarmyMrMime · 06/04/2019 20:07

I've recently had a flurry from some claiming to be from something like Telephone Preference Managment, not the real TPS. They're making claims such as the subscription is expiring. Bollocks.
The most recent one, there was the tell tale pause on the line and I hung up. They rang back "have you been recieving any nuisance phone calls?" I replied brightly "funnily enough, I'm having one right now". She hung up.

Normally they catch me at a bad moment for some witty or timewasting game. DM is good at stringing them along for ages. For once her total ludditism is an asset as she strings the Windows ones along safe in the knowledge there is no computer in the house other than DB's Amstrad from 1989.

I did get told to fuck off by a local double glazing company after I politely but coldly pointed out that their extortionate quote was 18 months ago, the work was done and I had asked many times to be removed from their contacts since then. At least they haven't rung back since.

YukoandHiro · 06/04/2019 21:40

Scamming is illegal. I obviously didn't do that. I worked in a call centre.
Impossible to tell on these threads if people are talking about call centre staff or genuine fraudsters - you can't lump them together however much you might want to.

dadwhostaysathome · 06/04/2019 21:46

Many a time I would call my old company’s clients about policies totally legally and ethically and be told to F off. Be nice if people were kind to each other.

bananasandwicheseveryday · 06/04/2019 22:13

We have a BT phone which has the call Guardian system. Unless the number is stored in my phone, it answers for me and the caller has to state who they are before the call gets through to me. Withheld numbers go through the same process. Haven't had a single cold call or scam call since we bought the phone. However, they do come through to the mobile sometimes and both dh and I have 'fun' with those - sometimes the accident was a deliberate murder attempt, sometimes we tell them that since they know so many details, maybe they are in fact the other driver and can we have their details so we can report them to the police and so times we just leave them hanging on whilst we 'look for documentation ' etc.
I'm afraid I have no time for genuine cold callers - I didn't ask you to call me and waste my time so I won't feel at all guilty about wasting your time.

Redshoeblueshoe · 07/04/2019 02:01

I had one, she said she was from San Francisco
Asked me if I was the home owner
No I'm the burglar
I said there was a dead body at the bottom of the stairs
My DD was howling with laughter, she kept saying you can't say that the police will be knocking on the door
This went on for half an hour
We both were polite, but I gave up in the end.
