To be terrified of having an endoscopy within the hour

Sat in hospital room feeling sick with fear. The procedure scares me having a camera down my throat plus obviously scared of what they may find.
Has anyone else had one?

Are you being sedated?

Always opt for sedation.

IHeartKingThistle · 06/04/2019 07:57

I have, it's over very quickly. You'll be fine.

talkingjapeneseireallythinkso · 06/04/2019 07:59

not had one but the staff will do their best to reassure you, it will be uncomfortable though so no point saying it won't.
why are you having it done ?

JenniferJareau · 06/04/2019 08:00

Opt for sedation. You won't know / remember a thing. I didn't believe that but I woke up and the last thing I remember was a nurse with a tube in her hand. I have no memory of the procedure.

Good luck Flowers

MrsSkeffington · 06/04/2019 08:00

I did it without sedation - it's totally fine honestly it's so quick and once they are past the throat it's ok. Honestly don't bother with sedation you'll be there hours.

bilbodog · 06/04/2019 08:00

Its not as bad as you think - uncomfortable, yes. Shouldnt take very long. Hope it goes well and that nothing untoward is found.

Awrite · 06/04/2019 08:02

I had one this week. I remember nothing after they put the mouth thing round my head. Looks like the Medazilam worked.

CrotchetyQuaver · 06/04/2019 08:02

Tell them how scared you are and Get the sedation, I had a meltdown when the time came and they were very kind. Not the sort of thing I usually do. How people have one with no sedation amazes me. Good luck, it WILL be OK and hopefully you won't need any more after this one Thanks

Lauriestory · 06/04/2019 08:10

I had it done with sedation and didn’t remember anything - was released from the hospital within an hour afterwards.

It will be over soon - just keep breathing slowly and remember you are completely safe.

MrsCatE · 06/04/2019 08:13

I was sedated. Unusually, I did remember everything. It was very quick, even with biopsies of I was completely relaxed. Hope it went well!

Southwest12 · 06/04/2019 08:15

I’ve had three. Two without sedation and one with. The first without sedation was fine as I didn’t know what it would be like, didn’t enjoy the second. With sedation I still knew what was happening but basically couldn’t remember it afterwards.

It’s not pleasant but it’s not as bad as you think it will be. Just focus on breathing and it’ll be over quickly.

PotsOfJoy · 06/04/2019 08:30

Just visualise that in 2 hours, or probably much less, that will all be over.

FinallyGotAnIPhone · 06/04/2019 08:31

I’m guessing it’s over now. I had one without sedation it was indeed awful but over relatively quickly.

blighter · 06/04/2019 08:33

Thanks for response. Consultant just told me despite me having meds to relax me plus a local anaesthetic I will still gag (I have a fear of being sick). Someone asked why I was having it done. Been feeling ill for a few months. Discomfort and bloating centrally below ribs stomach. Dodgy bowels. Possible celiac disease? Or worse? Don't want either tbh. Miserable

BlueMerchant · 06/04/2019 08:38

Ive had one and I managed without sedation. It's not pleasant but you can do it.
Treat yourself when it's over. BrewCake

TalbotAMan · 06/04/2019 08:38

I can't pretend it's pleasant but it doesn't last long. And if there is something to find, you're better off with it found than not as then they can do something about it.

TalbotAMan · 06/04/2019 08:39

If it is coeliac then all you have to do is change what you eat, and there's a lot of support on here and elsewhere. I was diagnosed last year.

DharmaInitiativeLady · 06/04/2019 08:40

You'll be fine....I worked myself up into a terrible state before mine and it was absolutely fine. I had so much midazolam that I don't remember any discomfort at all. Don't be afraid to ask for more midazolam:)

Peterpiperpickedwrong · 06/04/2019 08:45

DH has had two without sedation, he said it is over really quickly. I have a friend who has had two, one with and one without sedation. It will be over before you know it.
Don’t they usually look for coeliac via a biopsy using a camera up the other end?
They will know how nervous you are, they will do everything they can to relax you. Good luck.

thegreylady · 06/04/2019 08:50

I had one with sedation and one without. The one without was difficult but the one with sedation was easy, I knew nothing until it was over. They diagnosed a hiatus hernia which is treated with medication.
It will be over soon love.

KitKatCHA · 06/04/2019 08:50

Deep breathing during the procedure really helped me. Also find something to focus on and try and disconnect from what's going on. It's over very quickly.

SmiledWithTheRisingSun · 06/04/2019 08:52

Good luck OP! X

Horses4 · 06/04/2019 08:54

My now 9 year old is probably going to have her second one in the near future. Granted she gets sedated because of her age and they do colonoscopy as well. Honestly, it’s fine and super-quick and necessary to find out if you do have damage/inflammation. Think of it as a short nuisance to hopefully enable getting you healthy again. Good luck.

BetsyBigNose · 06/04/2019 09:02

I've had 9 over the last 4 years (chronic stomach ulcer) and ALWAYS with the banana throat numbing spray and 'as much sedation as you can give me please Doctor!' It's a breeze, please don't worry and good luck, I hope it's something easily treatable and non-serious.

Mascarponeandwine · 06/04/2019 09:43

I think you can’t drive yourself home if you opt for sedation so may be a problem if you have a car in the car park
