As per the title really, if you work from home, what job do you do please?

As a bit of background, I worked in customer services for a tech company. I’m currently on maternity with my 8 week old son and have just found out I’ve been made redundant.

I’m not due off maternity until October, so have some time to look into possible career choices.

Thanks in advance!

Peachy what's your blog about? I used to be a beauty blogger! Loved it but there weren't that many around then, YouTube wasn't as big then either and I made some good friends through it, but then it boomed and it was just saturated. Two of my blogger friends have done really well in it too, makes me wish I'd stuck to it and maybe made something from it.

terriblyangryattimes · 07/04/2019 08:54

Copywriting, social media strategist and associated roles depending on current clients. I do 'work from home' but get so much more done when I go to a coffee shop or co-work space.

BlueGoon · 07/04/2019 08:56

I work on a charity helpline from home. I also have a successful Amazon FBA business and just moving into coaching and development to support others with online selling.

supadupapupascupa · 07/04/2019 08:57

Management accounts. Cloud based packages make this pretty simple

Itsabeautifuldaytosavelives · 07/04/2019 08:59

I work for a cloud based software company, we all work full time from home. I bloody love it.

Alittlenonsensenowandthen · 07/04/2019 08:59

I'm a private music teacher. Not making huge sums of money as I'm part time but will increase as kids grow older. Its the best hourly rate for my skill set and enjoyable!

MsSquiz · 07/04/2019 08:59

I WFH as my DH's PA (he works OOH) - he's a company director and a board member of a charity, so I do the main bulk of his admin work

I also have started a blog, that's definitely more of a little hobby than a proper blog, but I enjoy it.

beansonbread · 07/04/2019 09:02

I'm in recruitment and marketing for a national charity organisation.

PeachyPrincess · 07/04/2019 09:04

@April pretty outing but I don’t think I’ve said anything on MN I wouldn’t want my name associated with. I blog about personal finance.

Blogging is definitely getting more saturated but I think that’s creating MORE opportunities. Especially with digital marketing growing, and brands realising the importance of influencers.

PeachyPrincess · 07/04/2019 09:05

@BlueGoon I dabble in FBA and would love to get coaching/take a course! Is there any way we can chat?

SherlockSays · 07/04/2019 09:09

User researcher for the NHS, I work from home one day a week, can do more if I'm not needed in the office or not out on visits.

PooTodd · 07/04/2019 09:41

I do medical writing - things like healthcare articles, patient information websites, and medical education materials.

I also do copyediting for book publishers and independent authors on book typescripts. And I also blog about copyediting and writing books (which doesn't make me any money directly but I enjoy doing it and it helps drives traffic to my website).

I also do a bit of dog walking - not much, but I'm walking my own dog anyway so I take a couple of neighbours dogs as well and they pay me for it.

I've also just bought a rundown tiny cottage in Wales, which I'm slowly doing up with the intention of eventually running a little holiday let business.

Once I quit my full time employed role, I got the bug working for myself, and love the variation of my weeks. I do work many more hours now than I did do before, but it's out of choice and enjoyment.

Civ service

Penguinpandarabbit · 07/04/2019 09:57

Economist, was working in London so only 1/2 days a week home but managed to get school hours and school holidays at last job. Now freelance as moved to countryside and work from home all the time. Cat is over the moon. Never have to leave home as its writing reports.

PlainVanilla · 07/04/2019 10:06

Freelance PM/BA in IT. Can't always work remotely, but on my current project for a large bank it is possible.

Lala503 · 07/04/2019 10:10

I manage a surgeon's private practice from home. Most of the others I know who do the same thing are mums as well.
It involves typing letters (usually in the evening), speaking to patients on the phone (mobile so I can do this when out and about with DS), dealing with the various hospitals he works with, and doing his bookkeeping.
Pay is not amazing, but it's extremely flexible.

The disadvantage is- it's so flexible I get to do absolutely everything else around the house and with DS. Often end up working evenings whilst Dh, who has a regular 9-5.30 job, relaxes on the sofa Angry

TooBusyHavingFun · 07/04/2019 10:27

I work as a health visitor and when not doing visits/clinics/meetings I get to work from home which is roughly about 50% of the week, all ad hoc so you couldn't do it with a baby in tow. Our local council have their office staff working from home 2 out of 5 days a week. It's all about cost cutting/not paying for so much office space. I love it!

Fundraiser2019 · 07/04/2019 11:03

Fundraiser for national charity. Started as office based and made gradual shift. Reports, phone meetings etc. Love it but you do need a change of environment sometimes so I vary between a few places.

Bedsheets4knickers · 07/04/2019 19:02

My friend works for a travel agency from home , 5 days a week 9-5

Isohungy · 07/04/2019 19:06

I consult on my chosen industry, largely over email and phone, skype and around 10 hours per mpnth in meetings. Rarely more.

VeryLittleOwl · 07/04/2019 20:17

A slightly eclectic mix of freelance audio transcription, trading football odds, renovating long-term empty houses and then running those houses as holiday lets.

3ChangingForNow · 07/04/2019 20:21

Self employed writer.

CheshireDing · 07/04/2019 20:35

Conveyancer. I 100% work from home - every day Monday-Friday. I probably go in the office about 3 times a year roughly (for 1 day).

It sounds perfect but working from home means you constantly do extra for free :(

MrBobLoblaw · 07/04/2019 20:37

I'm a voiceover artist. I have a studio at home and work whilst DS naps.

It's definitely a job that everyone thinks they can do but in reality it's hard to actually 'make it'. If I had a pound for every time someone has said to me 'I've been told I have a nice voice'..

I went to drama school for 3 years and have a naturally clear and engaging voice so get lots of boring e-learning type work which pays well. I do a variety of accents and character and child voices too so I get to work in animation which I love.

I made over £45k on my best year but I don't have as much time to dedicate to it now I have DS but I still make a good salary working just a few hours a week.

Thehop · 07/04/2019 20:38

Husband works from home 3-4 days a week. He works for the civil service.
