My dsis was raving on at me last summer about this book and now my dd is going on about it. I am dubious about their shared tastes in 'literature' namely because of a shared passion for Harry Potter.

Is this book worth reading? I tend to like investigative thrillers which are easily read - nothing too descriptive. I have very simple tastes and don't like 'wordy' stuff.

Would I like this book?

Yes! I really enjoyed it. I didn't find it too wordy at all.. maybe a bit.. I cant think of the word but the protagonist is unreliable due to alcohol and mental health factors so it can be a bit "bizarre" in parts but not too descriptive imo. It's a pretty easy read to be honest but it was still good.

mynameiscalypso · 05/04/2019 17:48

I read it and passed it onto my parents who both read it too. We all enjoyed it; it's a good crap thriller, quite easy to read and engrossing enough. The author is a bit odd but that's a whole different story. If it helps, all three of us hate HP too...

More than a little odd... www.newyorker.com/magazine/2019/02/11/a-suspense-novelists-trail-of-deceptions/amp

I agree with PPs - it's an easy read and has some bizarre parts! And I didn't particularly like any of the characters, cringed a bit at times but it's not awful.

DanglyBangly · 05/04/2019 18:19

It was fine. It’s a sort of combination of Girl On The Train and Hitchcock’s Rear Window so not that original but it was entertaining enough.

Susiesue61 · 05/04/2019 18:19

I really enjoyed it!! A few silly twists but an easy read!

Mrsfs · 05/04/2019 18:20

It is a very good book, I read it from start to finish with a day because I couldn't put it down. My family were not impressed lol

ladygracie · 05/04/2019 18:21

I read it on holiday and liked it. I think I guessed a few of the twists so it can’t be too complex as I am not good at that usually.

HollowTalk · 05/04/2019 18:23

I really liked it, but liked the New Yorker article even more!

Whatad · 05/04/2019 18:27

Ok, you're not really selling it to me. Won't be rushing out to buy it.

Sunseed · 05/04/2019 18:29

You're welcome to have my copy! Bought randomly at airport for a holiday read. Did the job but I'm not likely to bother re-reading.

Girlsnightin · 05/04/2019 18:45

It's ok, I like that genre and at least I finished it. But wouldn't rave about it.

Laquila · 05/04/2019 19:17

Fascinating New Yorker article!

Saucery · 05/04/2019 19:19

It’s a hackneyed genre and done far better by others.

Merril · 05/04/2019 19:23

It's a bit daft and I saw the twists coming a mile off but it's an easy read and one of the better ones in this genre.

It's also being made into a film starring Amy Adams.

BlueMerchant · 05/04/2019 19:26

I was disappointed with it. I like to be able to 'get into' the characters but they just seemed a bit flat.Bizzare parts of story.
Easy read but left me dissatisfied.

YouLikeTheBadOnesToo · 05/04/2019 19:29

It’s actually me next read. I’ve got about 20 pages of my current book left then I’m moving on to this one.

It’s a genre I enjoy so I’m looking forward to starting it.

Whatad · 05/04/2019 19:37

Ok, the the funny thing that my dsis said is that there's a twist that you'd never expect (that said, we're not the brightest of families lol).
I suppose I want to read it to see what my dd is enjoying really.
My dsis did say that there's about 200 pages before anything actually happens though.
The title is intriguing.

I think my dsis may have mentioned it as I suffer from agoraphobia at times. Or maybe she was just enjoying it.
I like easy reads, so maybe I'll get it at the library (would involve me leaving the house lol).

When you mention 'genre', what 'genre' are we talking here?

Read it recently, loved it, couldn't put it down

Xenadog · 05/04/2019 19:44

I really enjoy yer it. It isn’t high brow literature but there are lots of plot twists and I could see how a young teen might like it.

YouLikeTheBadOnesToo · 05/04/2019 19:46

Whatad it’s a thriller. As I understand it’s a long the same lines as Girl On The Train, Disclamier & The Couple Next Door.

EeeSheWasThin · 05/04/2019 19:47

It’s a kind of lightweight thriller/suspense. I enjoyed it but agree with pp who said it took a while to get into.

Chickenwing · 05/04/2019 20:16

I loved it!! Its a thriller and v gripping.

CastleCrasher · 05/04/2019 20:26

It's what I call an airplane book. No real depth, but still an enjoyable read to pass the time. Seen the twists a mile off, but that didn't spoil the book
