I feel your pain OP I’m suffering with tooth ache at the minute think it’s my impacted wisdom tooth trying to get through it’s agony I find sitting with my face against radiator helps and taking paracetamol and using orajel helps as well. I can’t chew food at the minute it leaves me in so much pain the pain gets that bad that I feel sick and hot all over. I had an awful abssece last year and half my face swelled up it had made its way up to my eye by the time I was able to get seen and the pain is back on the same side exactly a year later I could happily pull all my teeth out. I hope you get some relief soon OP sending you an unmumsnetty hug.

Bingowingslikeashieldofsteel · 03/04/2019 22:40

As minging as it sounds if the abscess is under a broken tooth you could try sucking hard on it. It definitely relieves the pressure but obviously only if you have direct access to it (as it were!). You may end up with some minging tastes in your mouth but it sure as hell relieves the pain!

You have my sympathy though, toothache is the worst pain ever

Order654 · 03/04/2019 22:43

A Toothache is the worst pain in the world.

When Iv had them Iv took as much pain relief as I was allowed. I ended up taking some of my parents prescription Co-Codamol 30mg/500mg Tablets and Iburpofen together just to numb the pain.

I hope it stops throbbing soon.

TheWitchwithNoName · 03/04/2019 22:45

I’ve just had this, back to the dentist on Friday. The only way I could get any sleep was by propping myself upright on the sofa.

Get on top of your painkillers first thing. I really feel for you OP Flowers

Order654 · 03/04/2019 22:45

I always find sleeping (if you can) upright helps more as well.
Iv always found it more painful laying down. No idea why.

Fazackerley · 03/04/2019 22:46

I stumbled into my dentists crying after three days of antibs with no improvement. He gave me 3 x dyhydrocodeine. God they were the most beautiful thing ever.

Browntile · 03/04/2019 22:46

If you’re on amoxicillin rather than metronidazole then I think you could rub a bit of whisky or something into it which does help a little.
I have had awful toothache in the past and despite also hating giving birth I agree toothache is worse. Fingers crossed the pain alleviates soon. 😘

CardsforKittens · 03/04/2019 22:49

When I was 8 months pregnant I took my husband to hospital in the middle of the night with toothache. I’d already given him some painkillers I’d bought in North America (not available OTC here) but nothing worked... except, as we discovered, inappropriate quantities of aspirin. But there are risks with large amounts of aspirin so I can’t officially recommend it.

Fluffyears · 03/04/2019 23:12

DO NOT PUT HEAT ON AN ABCESS putting heat on gum bacteria can draw it into the facial tissues. Never use heat externally for toothache. Swish your mouth with really hot salty water every half hour and use ice on the outside.

I had to go to the emergency dentist and saw a woman their had 5 abscesses 😱🤭 she must have been in utter agony.

danadas · 03/04/2019 23:16

You have my sympathy. I have horrible teeth and have had more than my fair share of abcesses. The most recent one had to be drained there and then. They pretty much had to peel me off the ceiling when they made the incision!

HeathRobinson · 03/04/2019 23:22

Clove oil. Better than anbesol imo.

Athenajm80 · 03/04/2019 23:25

Oragel from boots is amazing. It numbs the pain long enough for the painkillers to kick in. I used to take a cocodamol with one ibuprofen to help with various tooth problems. My dad (a GP) suggested the combination as they work in different ways so compliment each other, or something like that. If you buy oragel from eBay you can get the extra strength stuff.

MrsPworkingmummy · 03/04/2019 23:28

You have my sympathies. Wisdom tooth pain, to me, is worse than child birth (and I've had two natural labours). Hopefully the antibiotics will kick in. Clove oil doesn't help my wisdom tooth pain as such - it 'covers' the pain a little, but it's the antibiotics that really do the trick for me.

thenightsky · 03/04/2019 23:36

Anbesol gel pushed into the cavity (if you have a cavity) works wonders... total numbness, enough to be able to get to sleep. Its a sort of adult version of bonjela.

mindgoinground12 · 04/04/2019 00:08

ive tried oragel gives about a minutes relief. I literally screamed half an hour ago, took my codein again, still hardly any relief. dont think ill get any sleep tonight!

Whisky on a cotton wool ball held against the gum.

So painful - really feel for you.

Lolo1845 · 04/04/2019 09:10

Try Nurofen plus from the pharmacy. Helped when I had a really bad toothache. Think it's a mix of codeine and ibuprofen. Toothache pain is the worst

mindgoinground12 · 04/04/2019 13:17

I am of to the dentist again! Swellings hotten worse pain worse. Painkillers won't touch it and are making me feel sick and almost made me collapse. I can't eat and drinking even hurts. Sigh.

PositiveVibez · 04/04/2019 13:24

You poor thing. I can sympathise. I would rather have a baby than an abscess.

I have a phobia of dentists too so had to wait for a hospital appointment to remove the tooth. The appt was cancelled and the abscess came back again twice before I could have the tooth removed. It was the worst thing I've ever been through.

Worse pain than a corneal ulcer I had which was horrific.

SleepingIsOverrated · 04/04/2019 13:26

100% understand, I was the same a few months ago.

If it helps, I had the tooth removed and within 24 hours I was totally pain free.

Good luck OP

mindgoinground12 · 04/04/2019 15:05

So update! They've put me on two v strong antibiotics and have booked me in to get it taken out in a week. But and to begin with this surprised me they said if the anti biotics didn't kick in or the swelling moved thurther up my face or into my kneck I had to go to a&e immediately! I said I thought they couldn't do teeth. But apprently they have the max fax surgeons on stand by as it would need Ivs if it got worse. About to pop out to get some clover oil. Atleast it feels I'm not being a wimp

thatmustbenigelwiththebrie · 04/04/2019 15:07

The worst pain I have ever been in was a dental abscess. I was lying on the bathroom floor whimpering. Huge sympathy, I hope the antibiotics kick in soon.

mindgoinground12 · 05/04/2019 12:35

Okay so still in agony managed to get 1 and a half hours sleep last night. How does this clover pip thing work. Google says put on gum bottle says don't it Dosent seeen to do anything but wondering if I'm using wrong

OP posts:
MadamMMA · 05/04/2019 13:07

I get this and it's horrific so you have my sympathy, freeze gel/tiger balm on the affected side on the outside I mean, hot water bottle to lie face on and rub crushed ibuprofen directly on to the site.

GetOffTheRoof · 05/04/2019 16:21

Get Paramol. Seriously. It's dihydracodeine ane paracetamol, so as strong as you can buy over the counter. The only thing that has ever helped me with tooth pain.
