To ask if there’s a case to be made for MNHQ telling people to RTFT

Hear me out!

More and more lately there seems to be a huge amount of posters who don’t RTFT and who don’t even read the OP’s posts.

This irritates the fuck out of me I won’t lie.

But worse, it happens on sensitive threads.

Just the other day there was a surge of posters who couldn’t be arsed reading a thread about the OP’s childhood abuse.

Today, I’ve read a thread where posters were offering answers to the OP two days after the whole thing had been resolved.

It’s asked on here every now and again why people don’t RTFT and there are always shouts of “it’s too long” or “I’m answering the question asked in the OP”. Hmm

Well, if it’s too long to read why post?

And pages and pages after the OP people don’t think there’s the slightest possibility that a thread has moved on??

The whole MNHQ thing stepping in is no doubt ridiculous but ugh, I wish there was a rule where you’re not allowed to post without bloody well reading!!!

To me it seems so disrespectful to the OP.

And the people who announce that they haven’t read it, then plough in anyway as though announcing it has justified it!

I can’t be the only one who thinks this should fucking stop! Can I??

You are trying to fix somethig thst you don't need to look at or take part in. It's an anonymous internet forum. Trying to control stuff you can't control is just not worth it.

IvanaPee · 04/04/2019 08:37

I literally said in my OP that I know it’s ridiculous to expect HQ to “step in”.

I also said in subsequent posts that it doesn’t impact my life.

It’s something I find irritating and I’m discussing it. In the same way that MN isn’t obligatory, neither is posting on this thread.

If you disagree, that’s fine.

If you think think a poster with cancer being given weight loss tips as mentioned by PP is a problem, that’s fine.

By all means say so. But sneery one-liners when I’ve said, several times, that I don’t actually expect MN to control it or do anything seems a bit redundant, does it not?

Haven't read the thread, but if you're expecting MN to police every single post, you're going to be disappointed.

CalamityJune · 04/04/2019 08:56

I don't know what the solution is. I get bored of scrolling through pages of very similar replies and have often wished for a way to filter only the OP's posts, however that's not the spirit of a discussion board! Grin

Fair point! Grin

@Sparklingbrook
Cancel the cheque was a bit more interesting.
The op had attended a wedding and had given the Bride and Groom as a present a cheque for £50. The Groom then got in touch with op and said that he didn't think £50 was enough and would op up the amount to £100. So the AIBU was is the Groom a cheeky fucker.
In her update the op confirmed that the cheque had been cashed. That was on page 1 of the thread.
It went on for pages and pages with posters telling her to cancel the cheque.

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2019 09:03

Seems nobody wants to chat any more. Read the OPs posts only and post your words of wisdom then on to the next thread to do the same.

I don't think anyone thinks MN are going to police every post do they?

OP is just having a vent as is customary in AIBU.

LimeKiwi · 04/04/2019 09:04

I've just RTFT to keep any Thread Police from nee nawing up in the wahmbulance to tell me off.
My phone doesn't seem to have an option to make op in colour, would be easier if it did as sometimes threads are about 20 pages long and even if you're reading most of it, you miss a key update.
Somebody upthread said they wouldn't want anyone put off commenting if they could genuinely help, and I agree.
Oh, and YABU.

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2019 09:06

What's a whambulance?

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2019 09:07

Sorry Wahmbulance.

ScarletBitch · 04/04/2019 09:21

So what if they do OP? It is your business because???Biscuit

IvanaPee · 04/04/2019 09:22

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2019 09:24

Blimey somebody got out of bed the wrong side. Grin

Vulpine · 04/04/2019 09:27

It's just a bit bossy is all

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2019 09:31

I think ironically this thread is getting to the sort of length where nobody RTFT.

IvanaPee · 04/04/2019 09:32

Ranty maybe, but not bossy.

I haven’t gone “I demand you all RTFT.”

But I have no idea why people are so determined to defend the practice in the examples given on this thread. 🤷‍♀️

OP posts:
IvanaPee · 04/04/2019 09:33

@Sparkling I’m sure you’re right 😂

I wonder how many more hilarious “I haven’t RTFT” posts there’ll be...

OP posts:
Vulpine · 04/04/2019 09:34

Because it doesn't bother me in the least. Just read, ignore and move on surely?

Sparklingbrook · 04/04/2019 09:36

Probably the people getting all defensive and how dare you are the ones that don't RTFT and a nerve has been touched...

k1233 · 04/04/2019 09:41

To save clicking through heaps of paged I changed my display number of posts per page option from whatever low number it was to 1000 posts per page. Makes it much easier to scroll down and find the green OP posts on really long threads.

k1233 · 04/04/2019 09:48

That setting is under the little arrow top right of the screen, customise and there's numbers of posts per page.

I was trying to find out how to make the bookmarks work, but failed at that. I can bookmark but then can't find threads I've bookmarked. Which is why I think people comment as threads disappear in the list and the "I'm on" option only seems to work if you post. A similar option for bookmarked posts would be great.

53rdWay · 04/04/2019 09:53

My phone doesn't seem to have an option to make op in colour

It’s not your phone, it’s MN’s mobile site that doesn’t seem to show the full options. Or at least if they’re here I can’t find them either.

If you want to turn that setting on from mobile:

  1. scroll right to bottom of page, click ‘Desktop site’
  2. click this link: www.mumsnet.com/Talk?call=Preferences
  3. change ‘Highlight posts by thread author’ to a colour of your choosing
  4. scroll right to bottom of page again, click ‘View mobile site’.
IvanaPee · 04/04/2019 10:03

@Vulpine it doesn’t bother you that a cancer patient is given continual weight loss tips?

Or a CSA victim is asked repeatedly what’s wrong with her?

Different strokes for different folks, I guess. I’m glad I have more empathy.

OP posts:
53rdWay · 04/04/2019 10:09

It wasn’t even just weight loss tips iirc, it was continued “you cannot POSSIBLY be measuring your calories correctly, you need to be honest about how much you’re eating” long after the fecking cancer causing the issues was diagnosed. Ugh.

BloodyDisgrace · 04/04/2019 10:25

No, who the hell would want to read all 10 pages? I bet you all are reading it on tiny screens of mobile phones killing your eyes too - and that is very unreasonable to expect others to do. If someone wants to read the full thread (and I hate these acronyms) they will.
