To ask if there’s a case to be made for MNHQ telling people to RTFT

Hear me out!

More and more lately there seems to be a huge amount of posters who don’t RTFT and who don’t even read the OP’s posts.

This irritates the fuck out of me I won’t lie.

But worse, it happens on sensitive threads.

Just the other day there was a surge of posters who couldn’t be arsed reading a thread about the OP’s childhood abuse.

Today, I’ve read a thread where posters were offering answers to the OP two days after the whole thing had been resolved.

It’s asked on here every now and again why people don’t RTFT and there are always shouts of “it’s too long” or “I’m answering the question asked in the OP”. Hmm

Well, if it’s too long to read why post?

And pages and pages after the OP people don’t think there’s the slightest possibility that a thread has moved on??

The whole MNHQ thing stepping in is no doubt ridiculous but ugh, I wish there was a rule where you’re not allowed to post without bloody well reading!!!

To me it seems so disrespectful to the OP.

And the people who announce that they haven’t read it, then plough in anyway as though announcing it has justified it!

I can’t be the only one who thinks this should fucking stop! Can I??

The individual user has to choose to customise their account to show OP's posts in a highlighted colour. That could become an automatic feature I guess, if MNHQ agreed.

Apparently they were looking into it. Don't know if they still are.

OP - this is the post I wanted to write - well done!

Apart from it being less than helpful on sensitive threads, it makes others virtually unreadable as they don't make any sense! And it is definitely getting worse.

I don't know why people can't take 5 minutes at most, to read the OP's updates. Why do they think their two penn'orth is so important that they don't need to do that?

Or if they read a few posts up, that might give them a clue too?

IvanaPee · 03/04/2019 20:15

I try to read all the OPs posts but when there’s loads of pages I get bored of clicking!

You get bored clicking?? Ok...but do you contribute to threads when you haven’t actually read them?

I do think OP’s being automatically highlighted is a good start.

@JassyRadlett I think you’re close to the mark there! It’s arrogant.

I do too, but it’s usually a sign that I’m not sufficiently interested in a thread to stick with it/want to get to the next bit, and therefore definitely shouldn’t post.

Sparklingbrook · 03/04/2019 20:15

I think it's a bit rude to not read all the replies as well as OP's posts. I do see it as a conversation, but I am in the minority probably.

IvanaPee · 03/04/2019 20:16

Sparkling, I’m with you. Threads are definitely more like conversations than bullet points of information.

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 03/04/2019 20:20

Some of the best (and funniest) posts are from people other than the OP.

PlasticPatty · 03/04/2019 20:22

How entitled is that? Insist people read the whole thread? No.

IvanaPee · 03/04/2019 20:22

Agreed!

OP posts:
Princess1066 · 03/04/2019 20:22

On my feed the OP posts are in green & mine are in pink- I def didn't do anything to choose this - I wonder if it depends on what phone you have?

IvanaPee · 03/04/2019 20:22

How entitled is that? Insist people read the whole thread? No.

What??

OP posts:
PlasticPatty · 03/04/2019 20:27

My interest is in the original post. Why would I want to read the opinions of all and sundry?

Sparklingbrook · 03/04/2019 20:28

Lol at 'entitled'. As if people that don't RTFT will suddenly start doing so
because of this thread. Grin Or MNHQ will suddenly make it a Breach of Talk Guidelines.

It's not 'entitled' to wish people would do something.

IvanaPee · 03/04/2019 20:28

Do you read all of the OP’s posts? You don’t think there’s the slightest possibility that further information might emerge?

That’s either a bit thick or really arrogant.

OP posts:
Samind · 03/04/2019 20:29

Different when there are some name change fails though 😂 I've read a few recently where a poster is either the OP or having strikingly and creepily identical lives.

IvanaPee · 03/04/2019 20:29

Or MNHQ will suddenly make it a Breach of Talk Guidelines.

Oh, that they would! Grin

OP posts:
Sparklingbrook · 03/04/2019 20:30

Because the 'all and sundry' often have some really good points to make PlasticPatty, like when you have a conversation in RL you listen to what everyone has to say. Well I do. Confused Is that wrong too?

Fluffyears · 03/04/2019 20:33

The ones who obviously did not properly read the OP piss me off. ‘DH and I have been married for 5 years and have 2 children’ then you getsnpisters saying’are you married?’’do you have any kids?’ Yes! It’s in the OP!

IvanaPee · 03/04/2019 20:36

That’s another one @Fluffyears 😡😡

OP posts:
Laiste · 03/04/2019 20:38

I absolutely see a thread as a group discussion. You wouldn't walk into a room full of people who have been talking about something for a while with your fingers in your ears and just bark your opinion out and walk out again. Would you?? What the hell would be the point?

As pp said, if i can't be arsed to read the whole thing then why would i post?

Sparklingbrook · 03/04/2019 20:40

I think some people just read the thread title and not even the OP...

bibbitybobbityyhat · 03/04/2019 20:41

Yes, and also a case for telling people to have a looksy if the exact same thread on the exact same topic has been posted in the last day or two.

Crunchymum · 03/04/2019 20:42

I didn't read that thread at all.... or this one beyond the first post... but how was the OP's childhood abuse "resolved" ? Shock

IvanaPee · 03/04/2019 20:45

Yes, and also a case for telling people to have a looksy if the exact same thread on the exact same topic has been posted in the last day or two.

I only really look on Active and Threads I’m On, but if I see a title and it’s the same as another thread running I find it easy to just not click into it. :)

OP posts:
JassyRadlett · 03/04/2019 20:47

How entitled is that? Insist people read the whole thread?

No, just pointing out it’s a bit twattish to post without reading the thread isn’t entitled. It’s just a statement of reality.

PrincessAndThePee · 03/04/2019 20:58

The only thing worse than someone not reading the thread is reading 3 pages of the screetching from the fucking thread police because someone didnt want invest an hour of their life reading drip feeds.

READ THE FUCKING THREAD OH MY GOD, WE ESTABLISHED THAT FIVE MINUTES HOW FUCKING DARE YOU!!!!1111!!!

yabu. It's an internet forum people can use it as they like.
