AIBU to dislike this in a new bathroom?

We are in the process of getting an expensive new bathroom put in. I've just got home, most of it is amazing, but I hate this section! You can't open the sink door properly and it's just so annoying with the towel rail. When we arranged this and planned it out with the showroom, they didn't tell us that it wouldn't fit properly! I'm so gutted and I can't see past it and I hate it. AIBU?

Thank you all. Will update when I've heard back from the showroom. I'm currently downstairs fuming and refusing to look at it!

I think @Youdancin's idea is the best. Either that or get a slimmer towel rail and have some tiles replaced.

DownStreet · 02/04/2019 21:03

Re painting round it I would just cling film it and use a little roller on a long handle. No bother.

burritofan · 02/04/2019 21:07

Fitters are painting round it surely? They put mine on the wall pre-painting to do... whatever bathroom fitters do, then took it down for the paint job. Least of your worries though!

littledoll33 · 02/04/2019 21:08

It won't be THAT hard to remove the radiator and fit a different (smaller) one.

I can't believe any bathroom fitter or designer thought that was OK tbh. Confused

Puzzledandpissedoff · 02/04/2019 21:14

I hadn't even thought about painting around it
I didn't even think about being near the sink with it on

I know, OP, but you said you had a designer, so what beats me is why they didn't guide you on this? And what about the fitter ... why on earth would he fix the thing to a not-yet-painted wall?

You said you know the owner, but frankly for what you're paying I'd expect a hell of a lot more than this Hmm

Wallywobbles · 02/04/2019 21:19

You'll burn yourself if you clean your teeth naked as it is.

eggsandwich · 02/04/2019 21:21

I would say the towel rail is way too big for room its too domant and also why would you want one that big, I’d have a chat with the showroom about it, go in there armed with photos and say its not practical and look bloody ridiculous.

Oblomov19 · 02/04/2019 21:22

Agree. Unfortunately op I think this is a bigger design flaw than you've realised, ie not just the cupboard door opening.
Your'll burn yourself stood at the sink!

DownStreet · 02/04/2019 21:34

The thing is, if you usually have a towel on it, you won’t feel the heat that badly. It’ll be fine.

Al2O3 · 03/04/2019 09:37

Fucking hell, that bog-roll is enormous....

BlueSkiesLies · 03/04/2019 09:41

That is awful, you can't have the radiator there. You will burn yourself.

Can it be resigned anywhere?

Raspberry10 · 03/04/2019 09:45

YANBU. As someone who has a massive towel rad exactly like that next to the toilet, I cannot tell you the amount of times I’ve burnt my bum/hip in the middle of the night. Seriously that needs moving, it’s way too close to the sink someone will get burnt, not to mention you can’t open the cupboard door properly.

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 03/04/2019 09:49

If it's a big room, why is the radiator and sink squashed into the corner together?

finishers · 03/04/2019 09:52

I have a similar towel rail / radiator (I hate it)and you can move the top by pulling it back and unscrewing it but honestly you should have had the room painted first.

They are a total pain to clean and collect dust.

And yes you definitely will burn yourself with it in that position. You would need to keep towels on it where it is which defeats the purpose if it is the sole radiator for the room.

Shame you couldn't go for underfloor heating if you are into 5 figures.

I don't like the handles with the massive radiator.

I hope they will change it at their cost.

No point having a cupboard that you can't open.

finishers · 03/04/2019 09:56

I really hope you can change the radiator.

Just think about dusting every surface on that radiation and see how you can't dust or clean the back of the radiator.

I find my a real pain.

As the poles are close together so it is so much more of a pain than a flat surface radiator.

Also I hope the pipe doesn't go into the floor as that will be a little trip hazard that close to the sink area.

I think for 5 figures they should be able to change it for you.

TokyoSushi · 03/04/2019 09:56

Oh no OP, I agree that you can't have it there. Obvious design flaw (and it's far too big) I'd complain and see what they say...

StayAChild · 03/04/2019 10:34

Don't panic OP. There's nothing that can't be sorted. A plan on paper doesn't always represent the outcome very well.

The radiator is even more proud because of the discrepancy between the tiled area and the plastered wall. When millimetres are being compromised it can and has made a big difference, hence you can't open the cupboard fully.

If I'd paid all that already, I would suck up the cost of the radiator which doesn't work in situ, order a new shorter slim one to fit higher up above the tiled section or a narrow one like a pp's and add a separate towel rail. The damaged tiles can be easily replaced good as new.

Once it's sorted, you'll soon forget about it. Flowers

chandylier · 03/04/2019 10:45

It won’t cost thousands to fix
I had the same issue, didn’t see the size of the radiator until it was on. They took it off and had to replace two tiles, that’s all.
I cried at all the things that were wrong with my bathroom, but they really were little fixable things

redwoodmazza · 03/04/2019 10:48

I think that towel rail/radiator thing is way too big.
It dominates the room too.

I think you nee to change it to a different one that fits in better AND doesn't clash with opening the cabinet door. Then the wall can be painted behind when it is removed and before the new one is fitted.
This is probably a better option than changing the cabinet fittings etc because the radiator is too much anyway!

I would be heart broken about it too.

finishers · 03/04/2019 11:13

And actually people are correct if you change he radiator to a smaller thinner one it will all work out Smile

BreakfastAtSquiffanys · 03/04/2019 12:31

I've just installed a kick ass large towel rad like that in my bathroom and it's not too big for the room.
Yours is too big for the SPACE, not for the room.

I'm sure you can get it sorted.
If you have had a proper designer and fitter, the mistake is theirs not yours. That is what they do for a living. Most of us go years without installing a new bathroom

BruceAndNosh · 03/04/2019 17:07

I'm dying to hear is showroom /designer has come up with a solution to this cockup

MarshaBradyo · 03/04/2019 17:09

Yanbu it’s huge and a bit of an eyesore

Bathroomwoes2019 · 03/04/2019 20:51

A quick update.... that there is no update as I haven't heard back! Will be chasing tomorrow! Hmm
