Hi all!
My partner had a vasectomy after our 2nd child 2 years ago! I had spotting last week and feeling sick past few days so on the off chance took a test... and got a BFP!
Then noticed the test is 1 day out of date! 😬 what are the chances of this test being wrong?

What kind of idiot person goes to the trouble of getting surgically sterilised but doesn't follow up to make sure the procedure actually worked?

How clear was your previous positive exactly? Do you have a pic? Since it was followed by a neg I'm wondering if it was just a dye bleed or something.

What is your AIBU?

You are either Pregnant or not

Just get definitive test and find out

Buddyelf · 02/04/2019 13:22

OP if your period isn't due for another 11 days I would wait until the day its due to re-test and get a pink dye FRER test to be sure.
I'm sure you are well aware your DP should have gone back to have the follow up tests - maybe get them done now or you'll have this worry every month.

I would suggest that someone who doesn’t bother to check a vasectomy and test for pregnancy when they’ve barely ovulated needs to grow up a little themselves

EmrysAtticus · 02/04/2019 13:30

Why are you disgusted Newyear?

If there are 11 days until your period is due op then it is far too early to test.

MyDcAreMarvel · 02/04/2019 13:34

You have been with him since you were 13?

iolaus · 02/04/2019 13:36

If he didn't have the results checked he doesn't know it worked

@ZigZagIntoTheBlue - my husband had one last year and we were told they now only do one test - but a little later (I think it's the same sort of scale as the old second one) so I wouldn't worry

Only time I've personally known someone get pregnant after vasectomy was approx 20 years after his vasectomy - and they were told the way they used to do it (where they clipped them rather than cauterised) then after about 20years or so the body can manage to reoute the sperm - it's rare and just it's not usually an issue as by the time it's happened often the partner is no longer fertile (assuming he's had a vasectomy in late 30s/40s and partner is a similar age)

But to the question in the OP - I would say it's more likely an out of date test would give a false negative than a false positive - but do an in date one to be sure

iolaus · 02/04/2019 13:39

I'm sure I read somewhere that ovulation tests can be triggered by pregnant urine - maybe it works the other way round too - at 11 days before your period you are more likely to be ovulating that have enough pregnancy hormones to trigger a test

ThatLibraryMiss · 02/04/2019 15:19

11 days before your period is about three days post-ovulation. There's no way you can conceive before ovulation. Even the most sensitive test can't detect HCG before eight days post-conception. Morning sickness usually starts around six weeks after the LMP, so about a month from now.

You might be pregnant, I suppose, but the test result and sickness are completely spurious. Spotting's probably ovulation.

Oceanbliss · 03/04/2019 14:54

Nataliagibson if you are feeling disappointed in not being pregnant and think you may want more children could you discuss the possibility of reversal surgery to reverse the vasectomy. I have heard of this procedure but don't know much about it. It could be worth considering.

PoliticalBiscuit · 03/04/2019 15:00

This sounds really strange. Why would you test only 3 days after your fertility window if you knew there was no chance of being pregnant?

Why would your partner undergo quite a considerable undertaking to stop having children, and then make no further appointments to ensure it actually worked??

Didntwanttochangemyname · 03/04/2019 20:26

I can't believe he'd go to the effort of surgery and then 'forget about it' and not bother with the follow up test. My DH has recently had a vasectomy and that simply doesn't ring true as something that would happen.
