How is Great Britain looking from abroad?

I've seen various remarks that other countries are confused by our current situation, although surely Ukraine's running it close. Any comments from outside UK mumsnetters?

Lived overseas for 11 years. People here are bemused; confused and to be honest they laugh at us.

I'm embarrassed and glad I no longer live there. What a mess.

eurochick · 01/04/2019 20:27

I work a lot with Americans and other Europeans.

The Europeans are generally baffled as to why we would do this to ourselves. The Americans are happy that another country is as much of a political basket case as them.

Sproutsandall · 01/04/2019 20:27

Cringing massively for you all. It’s rare you see an actual whole country embarrass themselves this badly.

In France.

IceRebel · 01/04/2019 20:28

Well that's reassuring. Grin

Lookatmemeow · 01/04/2019 20:30

Every day I seem to be a teleconference with a different colleague from the EU; each call starts with them asking for my brexit summary - I'm like a cut price Laura Kuenssberg.

EmeraldShamrock · 01/04/2019 20:33

Chaotic government, passive people, complete shit show. Most of my friends and family are pretty gobsmacked, worried about the after effects here in Ireland.

ForalltheSaints · 01/04/2019 20:36

When I am abroad I do everything possible to avoid being identified as English. I've read enough of French and Belgian newspapers to know how we are perceived.

SurgeHopper · 01/04/2019 20:37

Total disaster tbh.

Brexit disaster, stabbings in London, NHS on its kness and education a shambles.

This really.

Greenlegobox · 01/04/2019 20:38

Irish here. General consensus at home and in work is disbelief that you made such a mess of everything and that ordinary people were so stupid.

Greenlegobox · 01/04/2019 20:40

We've a family wedding next weekend. We've agreed to not mention Brexit because we don't want to embarrass the visiting Brits. We know they voted for it.

Springwalk in Rome, you must be a very good tipper.

The empire seems to have left behind quite the superiority complex in some British people

100% agree with this (I’m a Brit living in UK - sadly)

IAmNotAWitch · 01/04/2019 21:24

Confusing and bizarre from here.

Agree about people remembering the Empire. Except the sun has set.

Quite frankly I am left wondering why we are still part of the Commonwealth and whether that is something Australia needs to reconsider.

SwoopTheJackpot · 01/04/2019 21:27

I'm not in UK. It feels like the UK are determined to press the self destruct button. It's like they fell out with the EU, both sides said some stuff and now the UK think things have gone too far to make amends. They should revoke or else get the public to vote on the options for an exit deal. No deal should not be an option. Backstop in NI has to be compulsory.

Madamfrog · 01/04/2019 21:45

We are confused, why is the UK shooting itself in both feet. Why do your institutions allow some mad politicians to put things to the vote umpteen times with no result, and destroy the country's credibility in their attempt to get personal power. We don't understand what is your government doing.
We think things are a mess here in France but nothing compared to the UK. It doesn't make us happy, Europe needs to be strong and we will feel the effects too even though much less than you. We feel a bit sorry for you.

bliminy · 01/04/2019 21:54

The other thing that's confusing to people where I live is why the UK doesn't just have a second referendum. It's something plenty of other countries do. People's minds change, their opinions evolve, the information they have changes, the environment within which they're making their decision changes. Hence they get a second or third go at a referendum if it seems that enough has changed since the previous one, and it's still perfectly democratic.

Yet apparently for the UK to have a second referendum is undemocratic. Weird.

Can we point out it is not the everyday people causing this bollocks in parliament?

It is dickhead MPS trying to suck off their own and trying to push their own agendas and blockade, cause mayhem at a party level and regardless of what side of the debate they're on, ignore half of their own constituencies?

This is merry-go-round daisy-chaining at a bizarre level and the indicative votes and all this other bollocks should have been carried out YEARS ago.

The reason we look a fucking mess is because of the charade of parliament not having it's shit together, not just the 'people's decison' to 'Leave'.

If they had a contingency plan in the first fucking place (maybe before a referendum 🙄) we'd be out now and probably discussing deals and new trading blocks.

MPs are about as representative of their local voters and constituents as Trump is of Obamas daughters.

Luciana Berger is my local MP. She's about as much 'Liverpool, Wavertree' as she is a cockney with three legs.

longwayoff · 01/04/2019 22:19

And there we have it, all proposals for progress defeated and the charade goes on. This isn't going anywhere good, feels like a coup has taken place already. Thank you for your responses. Fed up and going to bed.

Even before the vote for Brexit we thought people would be mental to vote for it, no way it could happen. I don't think anyone here is surprised it's not working out.

Dothehappydance · 01/04/2019 22:43

I just want to wake up from this nightmare.

ethelfleda · 01/04/2019 22:58

Me too dothehappy maybe it’s wishful thinking but I’m convinced Brexit won’t happen!

malificent7 · 02/04/2019 04:55

Lets hope this is the end of the Tory party. Sadly many Brits seem to love them. I am British living in the uk and i think we are a bunch of tossers..
