Three black men with their backs against a wall and officers stood in front of them, then a white woman with almost the opposite?

Or AIBU?

to think there's something wrong with this photo?

TheChippendenSpook · 31/03/2019 14:04

I know male officers can search females and vice versa. In my force if there is an officer of the same sex avaliable then they will be the one to search.

TheChippendenSpook · 31/03/2019 14:05

*to conduct the search.

Siameasy · 31/03/2019 14:42

At the time in the picture they’re not actually being searched - they may have been or going to be tho. They could being spoken to and having details taken. The fact that they’ve been separated out suggests that the reason for the talking to is that they’re accused of something

Dramatical · 31/03/2019 14:52

The photo is not staged, I'm fairly certain of that.

It was part of a campaign about racial equality. Of course it was staged.

CheekyChappy710 · 31/03/2019 14:52

@NewYear2018 That isn't racist at all? I would like to know what's racist about it ? Report away! I'm not a racist. Oh and if it's relevant at all I am Jamaican!!

Dramatical · 31/03/2019 14:54

At the time in the picture they’re not actually being searched - they may have been or going to be tho.

Obviously because it's a PR picture.

They could being spoken to and having details taken.

It's not a picture of the police and criminals. It's a photo shoot.

The fact that they’ve been separated out suggests that the reason for the talking to is that they’re accused of something

No. The picture is depicting racial inequality.

www.standard.co.uk/news/crime/edmonton-stabbings-urgent-hunt-for-suspect-after-four-people-attacked-at-random-in-just-hours-a4105396.html

Here's a current news story. Now the suspect in this case happens to be a black male. You'd be forgiven for expecting police in Edmonton at the moment to be stopping and searching black males. It would be ludicrous for the police in Edmonton today to be searching white females. If they stopped and searched me today, I'd tell them to give their heads a wobble (dodgy looking though I may be Wink )

DoesLittle · 31/03/2019 15:00

Personally I feel we need to get the balance right between allowing police to S&S people who might look up to no good, while at the same time ensuring that police are not purposely and for no good reason, only targeting a particular race. It becomes utterly ridiculous if for the PC brigade (that would be the politically correct ones, not the Police Constables), then police are forced to search an equal number of black/white/Asian and male/female.

SnowyAlpsandPeaks · 31/03/2019 15:01

Haven’t read the full thread- but it’s a stock photo, to highlight inequality. I’ve used it several times in powerpoints.

Why are people getting upset over it?

BendydickCuminsnatch · 31/03/2019 15:03

Just looking at the pic rather than reading anything, by the body language I’d assume the woman is the victim and therefore not pressed up against the wall like that. Obviously posed though and therefore terrible that they didn’t choose more diverse models!

DoesLittle · 31/03/2019 15:03

What I'm trying to say is that in this example, I would expect the number of lone tall black males being searched to be a lot higher than the number of white females being searched. And examples such as these can possibly skew statistics.

VladmirsPoutine · 31/03/2019 15:10

@Ghanagirl can I please summon you to this thread.

This photo is an excellent illustration of what young black men go through on an almost daily basis. Whether it is staged or not is really not the issue IMO.

Lweji · 31/03/2019 15:12

They should have put Farage, Boris and Cameron's lookalikes against the wall. The woman should look like Theresa.

I agree with you, OP. Highly insensitive, but, I suspect very realistic.

Buster72 · 31/03/2019 15:14

Sorry if this details the thread a bit but it is not posed. The metropolitan police would not agree to a posed photo like this. Also the state of their uniforms (roles up sleeves, water bottles on pouches, public order batons, )tells me this is a genuine encounter the photographer was lucky to catch

DoesLittle · 31/03/2019 15:20

Sky has covered the Edmonton stabbings and S&S in general today. Apart from the 4 in Edmonton, there has been 1 in Clapham and 1 in Islington over the weekend I think.
Apparently S&S is controversial as black people are 9 times more likely to be stopped than white people.

My local FB group is for a massively diverse area of London. There have been overwhelming calls from all participants of all ethnicities, though mainly from women to bring back full S&S powers, as knife crime in the area is rife. We've had periodic S60 powers enforced recently.

Dramatical · 31/03/2019 15:21

Sorry if this details the thread a bit but it is not posed.

Yes it is.

The metropolitan police would not agree to a posed photo like this.

They didn't. It was a staged photo to accompany an article about racial inequality in the police.
Also the state of their uniforms (roles up sleeves, water bottles on pouches, public order batons, )tells me this is a genuine encounter the photographer was lucky to catch

It's a set up picture as part of a photo shoot.

Siameasy · 31/03/2019 15:23

I think the idea Buster is that it’s actors. It doesn’t actually say it’s the Met altho it looks like them very much

DoesLittle · 31/03/2019 15:23

How do you know Dramatical? Did you email Getty images?

sagradafamiliar · 31/03/2019 15:27

If it was a photo for an article about institutional racism within the police STILL then it demonstrates the point perfectly.

Siameasy · 31/03/2019 15:34

It’s interesting DoesLittle that the people you spoke to thought that there needs to be a call to “bring back full powers” - this is probably because May was very disparaging about stop and search so the public perception may be that police were curtailed somewhat?
The police have never lost their powers under Sec 1 Pace or Sec 23 MDA but some aspects of Sec 60 have changed regarding authorisation
Sec 44 was got rid of but that was a while ago

Lweji · 31/03/2019 15:55

Apparently, it was taken during Notting Hill Carnival

Buster72 · 31/03/2019 16:00

Knew it was NHC....

NoTNoShade · 31/03/2019 16:08

That explains the odd background. I think it’s weird the men all have the same outfit on! White T-shirt and a black body warmer.

Siameasy · 31/03/2019 16:22

Maybe it’s like Mean Girls and you all have to wear the same thing to hang out with them Shade

NoTNoShade · 31/03/2019 18:53

Maybe!

It’s extra odd as the police are pretty much wearing the same as the blokes. Even the hat is police like.
