Is this a weird thing to say to a baby?

DS is 7 months old.
He was smiling at 2 women in a shop. One says "ah look - he has good taste in women!"
The other says
"Nevermind that dummy, I know something else he'd like to suck on!" And they laughed.

What would you make of that? (I wasn't there, he was with my dh).

Yes, that's weird and creepy. Just a bad joke I expect, but still bloody odd.

polarpig · 30/03/2019 18:38

It's an awful thing to say to any age.

HollowTalk · 30/03/2019 18:38

Ugh, why would she say that about the dummy?

TheGrey1houndSpeaks · 30/03/2019 18:39

What a pair of gobshites

Cherylshaw · 30/03/2019 18:39

I would have asked what they ment by that.
Really creepy sounding

Farmerswifey12 · 30/03/2019 18:40

The first bit fine

The 2nd bit, not fine! Totally inappropriate

Mopthefloor · 30/03/2019 18:40

The first thing sounds like a silly thing that people say (I wouldn’t, but it wouldn’t exactly shock me). The second comment is really, really off. Imagine a male saying it to a female baby 🤮

GPatz · 30/03/2019 18:41

It's a weird thing to say, although it's been said to me before, but the person who said it was a friend and knew I was breastfeeding.

Mopthefloor · 30/03/2019 18:43

gpatz that makes perfect sense to me in that context.

BlueSaphire · 30/03/2019 18:44

Paedo tendencies maybe?

Claply · 30/03/2019 18:44

OK it's not just me, good.
I found it revolting.
Dh did too but was just sort of stunned into silence and walked away.

I was expecting to say yabu as I normally eye roll at these types of things but this is bloody weird!

3ChangingForNow · 30/03/2019 18:49

Yuck

Nearlythere1 · 30/03/2019 18:59

That's disgusting. I wish your DH had said something but I well know how easy it is to be stunned into silence like he was.

Elledouble · 30/03/2019 19:04

Yeh, that’s gross.

IchibanLipstickForMen · 30/03/2019 19:15

Did they just mean he wanted boob instead? Like maybe presuming he's breastfed? Think it's weird either way hut just wondering if that may have been the context. If so it's a little less creepy.

SummerHouse · 30/03/2019 19:20

Would have stopped them in their tracks if your DP said "never mind him. I bet I have something you ladies would like to suck on..."

Billben · 30/03/2019 19:37

The first comment is fine, but the second one 😱

EleanorOalike · 30/03/2019 19:39

Omg, that’s horrendous. I feel sick. What is wrong with people?!

Marilynmansonsthermos · 30/03/2019 19:49

I think its pretty obvious the 2nd comment is disgusting. Finding it difficult to imagine someone saying that tbh!

BlueMerchant · 30/03/2019 19:52

First woman- fine ok
Second woman- vulgar.

Teddy1970 · 30/03/2019 19:56

That's grim, quite revolting in fact.

cradlebrain · 30/03/2019 19:56

Yes, I agree with pp who suggested the outcry if a man said that to a little girl. Who even thinks like that?

Sparklingbrook · 30/03/2019 20:06

Eww

Knitclubchatter · 30/03/2019 20:08

Typical breastfeeding joke/comment from woman number 2.
Not a big deal in my world.
