to expect people shopping at the supermarket without children to NOT park in the mother and baby spaces

Went to Asda this afternoon. As I was parking a lady was also parking next to me in the only other free mother and baby space. She then got out of her car, clearly had no child and walked into the store.

On my way out 2 young lads in a van pulled into the space I had just vacated.

This really p*sses me off. The car park is enormous - its not as though there are not enough spaces and indeed its very rare to have to walk very far anyway. These spaces are here for a reason.

Am I being unreasonable?

MhamaiJane · 11/07/2007 17:51

Oh wow how exciting! I've never come across a thread like this before! Oh sorry wrong thread.

ow82 · 11/07/2007 17:51

a lady complained to the manager this w/e in the swimming pool I was at with dad - she said to me I saw you had the last P&T space, but you have a baby so it's ok - I should bloody well hope so!

(fwiw her LO's were 4/5 or so - not that I saw where she had parked was there b4 me but now really.)

Staceym11 · 11/07/2007 17:52

not unreasonable but this arguement is old, and then its gets on to mother and toddler vs disabled and ends in a row, i'd quit while you're ahead!

alicet · 11/07/2007 17:55

Not wanting to end in a row. Just irritated by it. How is it anything to do with disabled spaces anyway?

And those who have nothing better to do than leave sarky comments thereby bumping my thread which you think is a waste of time - whats that all about?

OP posts:
Staceym11 · 11/07/2007 17:56

i was just warning it is likely to end i na row, always does, i think people have just seen a thread like this about once a week forever so they're not trying to be rude jsut a bit bored of it!

tortoiseSHELL · 11/07/2007 17:58

sorry alicet, just it's one of THOSE thread topics, that always ends in tears. What it has to do with disabled spaces is that the general pattern is...

Complain about people using P&T spaces with no children.

Someone says 'was really annoyed, old person looking really frail parked in the space I wanted'

Someone else says 'I don't park in disabled spaces, why do they park in P&T spaces just cos there are no disabled spaces left?'

Etc Etc Etc

meandmy · 11/07/2007 17:59

i have dd 13mo an i insist dp parks further away esier to get into car boot and pulling out etc even if there is mother an baby spots

policywonk · 11/07/2007 17:59

Alice - there are quite a few people on this site who use the disabled spaces at supermarkets and they get pretty wound up when someone suggests that having a baby/toddler should entitle someone to the same consideration as having a disabled badge (I know that you haven't suggested any such thing). Anyway, as these rows really do surface about once a month, a lot of posters seem to have come to the conclusion that there just shouldn't be any P&T spaces at all, as they just promote confusion and bad temper.

I think that this is a fair summary, but I'm fairly sure that someone will disagree with me on something.

Staceym11 · 11/07/2007 18:01

think they've got it down pat, thats why i thought i should pre-warn thats all!

tissy · 11/07/2007 18:02

alicet, I was going to post "welcome to mumsnet, and you have picked virutally our most controversial topic for your first post"

BUT I see you have been posting here for at least 18 months! Surely you can't have missed the previous threads on this topic. They always end in tears!

LordPan · 11/07/2007 18:06

so long as the dogging spaces remain available, I don't really care if YABU.......

coppertop · 11/07/2007 18:06

Alicet - These threads usually end up like this:

  • OP writes a post similar to yours.

  • People agree it can be annoying.

  • Someone else comes along and says "And I hate it when disabled people use the P&T spaces too. They should use the disabled spaces as there are loads of them."

  • People point out that disabled people need to park close to the store far more than people with children need to.

  • Some people post that they need the bigger space to get their child(ren) out of their carseat.

  • Someone else says that they could have a big space/more room if they park further away.

  • Someone else adds a complaint about disabled drivers who can walk into the shop apparently with no problems.

  • People with blue badges point out how difficult it can be to get a blue badge and that not all disabilities are obvious.

  • People then post anecdotes about their neighbour/friend/Great Uncle Bob who managed to get one "and there's nothing wrong with them!"

Don't take it too personally. It's just that these threads nearly always follow the same pattern.
