given a cast off that’s worth a lot of money

I’ve name changed for this.

About two years ago my friend was having a clear out and asked me if I wanted a bag. She hated it but I really liked it. I use it lots and have been given loads of compliments on it.

A woman I work with is really into bags (mulberry, Pravda etc) and was always going on at me that she thought the bag was worth a lot of money because she thought it was real ostrich skin Shock

I never paid heed to her but my mum commented recently that she had looked at the bag and she was convinced it was real ostrich.

Cut a long story short and the bag has been checked and valued and it’s real and worth thousands.

I have absolutely no plans to sell it. My friend bought it at a market abroad and thought it was a fake.

Do I tell her it’s real? Do I keep schtum?

Hmm for some reason i dont think op will be bck to this thread

notapizzaeater · 27/03/2019 08:27

I'd tell her and let her decide what to do. You could buy another bag you love with a share of the money.

YesimstillwatchingNetflix · 27/03/2019 11:26

I am seriously shocked that so many people in this thread would consider not telling the friend and keeping the bag in these circumstances. What selfish and dishonourable behaviour. Confused

BlueSaphire · 27/03/2019 12:06

I suppose the bottom line is what does the OP value more, the bag or the friend.

Mumoflove · 27/03/2019 16:39

Of course tell her, she’ll be happy for you!

ToftyAC · 27/03/2019 17:48

I would think the friend knew how much it was worth. How could she not? Perhaps the bag was a gift to the friend and she just wasn’t fussed on it and would rather have given it to someone she likes who admired it.

beclev24 · 27/03/2019 18:12

so surprised by all these answers given that on MN when someone says something like "Amazon sent me an extra teaspoon by mistake" everyone piles on to tell the OP taht if thety don't send it back IMMEDIATELY they are a nasty thief etc.

Of course you should tell your friend about this. And I think in these circumstances the friend should sell it and split the money with you.

Gwenhwyfar · 29/03/2019 07:08

"I would think the friend knew how much it was worth."

Do you? You think she gave away 4.5k?

CatAndHisKit · 29/03/2019 11:30

nobody said that the market stall was one selling fake bags as a speciality. It could have been a vintage flea market where individuals sell or saomeone who wasn't experienced with bags - like it happens here at car boots sometimes.

pastures It can be Hermes because the vintage shop was offering the OP 4.5K with the profit of a few thousand in mind!
But OP, surely you've looked at any labels inside! a non-brand osrtich bag isn't so valuable as many said here, they cost a coup;e of hundreds at most.

It’s extraordinary.
