Frustrated with tenants?

thankunextex · 25/03/2019 10:13

I’m trying to view a house and the tenants have refused to let me view it both times. Appointments been booked in advance and then they say it’s not a good time an hour before.

I get it if you don’t want to actually leave the property (not sure if that’s the situation or not) but I’m just being messed around now.

I’m starting to think tomatoes and houses aren’t actually the same thing...

I think this thread has lost its way. Confused

ColeHawlins · 25/03/2019 19:37

I prefer the hotel analogy - for whatever reason you want to go to Spain for however long suits you, you don’t want to make the commitment that the hotel own has,

I'm fascinated that LLs all seem to think that tenants are people who just CBA to buy. It took me eight years to assemble both a deposit and a mortgageable (permanent) employment arrangement.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 25/03/2019 19:38

You’d hardly moan about the maid coming in to clean for 10 minutes so it’s similar to a property inspection or viewing.

Of course you would if you didnt want the maid to come in! You’re perfectly entitled to say “no maid thank you” and the hotel respects that.

Inliverpool1 · 25/03/2019 19:43

ColeHawlins - no I don’t think people can’t be arsed to buy but you’ve got to live somewhere and pay your way. My kids will pay rent until they are ready buy or maybe they won’t and they’ll rent forever, whatever suits their needs at the time.

ColeHawlins · 25/03/2019 19:45

It's not "don't want to make the commitment" then, is it?

It just feels a harsh thing to throw out when so many people can't get on the ladder.

Inliverpool1 · 25/03/2019 19:48

Can’t make the commitment would equally apply I guess. Either way when the times right if you want to you will if you don’t you won’t

ColeHawlins · 25/03/2019 19:51

Either way when the times right if you want to you will if you don’t you won’t

I'm not sure that's really true these days either.

53rdWay · 25/03/2019 19:55

My kids will pay rent until they are ready buy or maybe they won’t and they’ll rent forever, whatever suits their needs at the time.

Or, they'll be ready to buy and their needs will be best met by buying, but they still won't be able to buy because the housing market is the way it is.

I think this is a point that often gets missed in these angry MN renting-and-landlords discussions. Some people still see the anger as people being angry at individual landlords or resenting landlords' right to make a living or whatever. Usually it's more that people are angry at the wider system which has priced so many out of the market altogether and made private renting a horrible, insecure, expensive nightmare, and then when so many BTL/'accidental' landlords are totally clueless about the system they're operating in it doesn't help.

My best landlords have been BTL landlords who understood it was a business transaction and took their legal responsibilities seriously. The worst ones have been BTLers who thought they were somehow doing their tenants a favour that everyone should be grateful for. When you're entirely priced out of the market and can't even hang up a picture or refuse regular 'inspections' of your home right down to the cupboards conducted when you're not there, it really doesn't help to have some condescending clueless landlord say "be grateful you don't have to fix the shower!"

53rdWay · 25/03/2019 19:56

And as for "if you want to buy you will", I think the banks have to be a bit more discerning about offering mortgages these days! Grin

Inliverpool1 · 25/03/2019 20:23

I’m not getting into a huge debate but I bought my 2nd house in November I’m nothing special don’t earn huge salary, self employed every excuse under the sun not to lend to me and yet a bank did. 🤷‍♀️

ILoveMaxiBondi · 25/03/2019 20:57

What do you need two houses for? Confused

HarrysOwl · 25/03/2019 21:00

What do you need two houses for?

Investment?

I have more than one. My others are rented.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 25/03/2019 21:04

Investment is what you do with money you have, not money you need to borrow.

Inliverpool1 · 25/03/2019 21:14

ILoveMaxiBondi - if I don’t pay the money back I lose both so it’s my risk. You could do it to, if you chose not to that’s your decision but it’s not difficult or impossible as it’s often made out to be on here.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 25/03/2019 21:17

if I don’t pay the money back I lose both so it’s my risk.

If you don’t pay back the money? So you’re not renting either house out then? Is one a summer retreat?

You could do it to, if you chose not to that’s your decision

Of course I could. I just choose to be poor and at the mercy of someone else’s finances and personal circumstances. I live for the thrill of not knowing where we’ll be living in June.

HarrysOwl · 25/03/2019 21:17

My properties were bought with money I have. I've never borrowed a penny.

You can't always assume someone's situation.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 25/03/2019 21:18

You can't always assume someone's situation.

I didn’t assume anything. Liverpool said the bank loaned her the money!

HarrysOwl · 25/03/2019 21:19

Fair point Grin

Inliverpool1 · 25/03/2019 21:22

Of course the bank loaned me the money. It’s not insurmountable ILoveMaxiBondi I’m sorry it isn’t, up to you how you live your life 🤷‍♀️

ILoveMaxiBondi · 25/03/2019 21:29

Grin you’re so funny Liverpool. It must be nice in your head.

thedisorganisedmum · 25/03/2019 21:37

Some people just like to be bitter and unpleasant, it's easier to blame others and the system than do something about it. It's a choice. It's not necessary to be so nasty towards others who have made a different one.

Someone trying to view a property is having no impact on your own living conditions, no need to come to abuse them.

JessicaWakefieldSVH · 25/03/2019 21:39

It's a choice

Property ownership is a choice for some. Not everyone has that choice and it’s incredibly naive to think otherwise.

ILoveMaxiBondi · 25/03/2019 21:40

Hmm no-one has been abused on this thread. Behave.

53rdWay · 25/03/2019 22:01

it's easier to blame others and the system than do something about it.

‘Do something’ like what? Wish really really hard for the Mortgage Fairy to come? You seem pretty naive about the circumstances people are in while being very dogmatic about how it’s probably their own ‘choice’ anyway.

I bought a house, I’m well out of private renting and thank God for it. Can still appreciate just how hard it is to buy for many many other people though.

ColeHawlins · 25/03/2019 22:17

you’re so funny Liverpool. It must be nice in your head.

TBF to @Inliverpool1 , if her NN is a clue, then property prices are saner in her region.
