To not like Metro Tiles?

They seem to be everywhere 🙈

Looking for wall tiles for my new bathroom. We live in a very old house at the moment and have wooden panelling which I like but as our new house is (renovation project 😲) a 1950s house I just don't think they'll look quite right. I also want a change and think tiles will be easier to clean 🙈

All I can seem to find is Metro tiles which I don't like, not sure if that's because they are a bit overdone or I just don't like them?

Does anyone have any other bathroom tile ideas please 🙏 Pinterest is failing me xx

I also love patterned tiles, we have Mexican tiles in our kitchen and I love them, but not sure how to make them work in the bathroom ( or if I'm brave enough)

I really like travertine!

We have neither travertine or metro tiles. Just get something you like, as someone else said, everything dates at some point. I have large white shiny tiles on the entire bathroom, with a vertical column of hammered silver down the wall and side of the bath. In our en suite, we have very large cream porcelain, with mother of pearl mosaic tiles in the shower.

We've got those hexagon tiles in an alcove (contrasting with the metro tiles Wink), they're lovely and I might use them more when we get the loft done. We've also got these wood effect tiles - makes the white look less clinical and are very, ahem, forgiving dirt-wise (unlike the grey slate in the utility room which shows every speck of dust)

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 28/03/2019 09:37

I like the marble hexagon tiles

minipie · 28/03/2019 09:41

Every era has its “look” which then becomes “dated” 5 years later.

Travertine was the “look”, then grey, then metro tiles, at the moment it’s probably patterned tiles and hexagons/herringbone. We are all influenced by what’s around and in magazines/shops/Pinterest no matter how hard we try not to be.

Choose something you really like and will be practical to live with.

Wallabyone how are your mother of pearl tiles holding up in the shower? I love those but got nervous they wouldn’t do well in the wet

CRbear · 28/03/2019 09:45

I decided that even if my bathroom dates in ten years- it will probably need redoing anyway. I’d rather enjoy it now. I went for patterned floor tiles and a large metro tile. Are they still metro if they’re big? I love them!

Yanbu. We all have likes and dislikes - in home decor as much as everything else.

Bananasarenottheonlyfruit · 28/03/2019 10:04

I have these tiles on one wall. I don’t care if it dates. I love them!

Wow @CRbear that looks really nice , random question but is your loo in a different room?

CRbear · 28/03/2019 21:18

@queenqueenqueen it used to be two rooms funnily enough, but no toilet is just out of shot on left.

wildbhoysmama · 28/03/2019 21:37

OP the peppermint geometrics are divine. The floor tiles a pp posted are Laura Ashley- I have different ones from the range on my bathroom floor. I love them.

queenqueenqueen · 28/03/2019 21:43

Ooh thanks @wildbhoysmama , I love the colour and have just ordered a sample 😍😍

I don’t think metro tiles can look dated as they are classic, those hideous geometric tiles on the other hand.....

queenqueenqueen · 28/03/2019 22:01

😂😂😂 @bettyboojustdoingthedoo do you have metro tiles in your house somewhere by any chance??

OP posts:
BettyBooJustDoinTheDoo · 28/03/2019 22:26

Lol Queen not at present! though I’m having a new kitchen and they are on my list Grin, I do however have some hideous travertine in my en suite.....it will be going very soon!

Penguinpandarabbit · 28/03/2019 22:41

I hate metro tiles too especially the white ones which are classic public toilet tiles. Would just go for plain tiles but ones you like.

clippityclop · 28/03/2019 22:42

We'redoing up a little shower room in a traditionally decorated cottage at the moment and I've been trying to find pale cream/ivory tiles but definitely not metro becaue they remind me of old public loos or the fishmongers when I was a kid! I want to keep the room neutral, it has oak floor and worktops. Coloured tiles seem too much of a commitment and and pure white would be too clinical. If anyone has any ideas please feel free to shhre!

MairzyDoats · 28/03/2019 22:44

My bathroom has just been finished (yesterday!) and these are my tiles - I don't suppose they'll be to everyone's taste but I loves em!

The floor is just lino actually, in case I get bored, but the shower tiles are hand painted and look so many different shades of greeny blue. The rest of the bathroom is very simple so I thought I could get away with an adventurous wall. The sink hasn't been installed here, obviously

My last flat had two bathrooms, both done in tavertine. So dull! I hated the fact they'd not bothered to make them different.

Wallabyone · 28/03/2019 23:50

@minipie They're great Smile We've had them for a few years now and they've lasted well, and are not slippy, which is important on a shower floor!

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 29/03/2019 19:28

@MairzyDoats where's your very stylish shower screen from?
