To not like Metro Tiles?

They seem to be everywhere 🙈

Looking for wall tiles for my new bathroom. We live in a very old house at the moment and have wooden panelling which I like but as our new house is (renovation project 😲) a 1950s house I just don't think they'll look quite right. I also want a change and think tiles will be easier to clean 🙈

All I can seem to find is Metro tiles which I don't like, not sure if that's because they are a bit overdone or I just don't like them?

Does anyone have any other bathroom tile ideas please 🙏 Pinterest is failing me xx

We are just about to have metro tiles - I've always loved them and although they make me think of public toilets, that's fine for our period house ;-) .

That said, I've seen loads of fantastic alternatives in all shapes and patterns - if you are worried about dating, why not have the largest, plainest tiles where necessary and change paintwork?

TipseyTorvey · 25/03/2019 11:17

My whole kitchen and both bathrooms are both metro tile tastic and I love them all. Also grey grout so I never need to clean it properly as I'm very lazy. Older house so I think they work. I never did like those massive beige tiles that everyone was getting at the time. Now it's all grey so I suppose just go with what you like and don't try to be fashionable.

queenqueenqueen · 25/03/2019 11:27

Ooh @readinginreading I really like that 💗💗💗

Metro tiles are classic in a period property, (I have them in main bathroom and en-suite) and was tempted by the kitchen also but have decided on something else now.

I do love the public toilet look though Grin

SunnySomer · 27/03/2019 16:41

The blue ones earlier are really pretty but will definitely date. I have generally (over the last 20 years) gone for large white tiles and changed the feel of the room using paint and towels as a previous poster suggested.
We just did our en-suite with marble effect tiles (floor and walls) which looks really good. It’s a tiny space so this adds light but looks sort of period (Victorian house)

Slightlyjaded · 27/03/2019 16:50

Hate Metro Tiles.

Everything dates.

Unless it's proper period. And even that dates to a degree. I will always love Moroccan tiles, Trompe l'oeil tiles and pattened tiles in general, but these will come and go in fashion.

My current obsession is Gold grout, and I am really tempted but i'll probably look at in in a couple of years time and decide it looks like Saddam Hussein's en suite...

I love most of the Porcelanosa tiles, love Spanish ceramics in general!

purplepears · 27/03/2019 17:14

Metro tiles look like a urinal to me. Sorry.

Wonnacott35 · 27/03/2019 18:21

I love this ... I've been wondering for the last three years if metro tiles are going to go out of fashion

Have you looked at tile alternatives like showerboard or glass?

queenqueenqueen · 27/03/2019 18:39

@wonnacott35 what are on the walls can't zoom in on that pic?

Painted as far as I can tell. If you're on insta it's worth asking @gold is a neutral she seems to reply to any questions. You'll need to search for her as I can put her tag in here (sorry). Here's a closer look from her page

DontCallMeCharlotte we've got the Attingham tiles as well and I love them. We've also got a couple of rows of grey just above eye level.

We've got metro tiles in the kitchen and I love them, but they are bright red so don't look like a public toilet!

I completely agree with you on the metro tiles, they look like old-fashioned public toilets. We have something like this, but in beige, at home: www.toppstiles.co.uk/tprod46161/tekno-grey-tile.html and I love it, but in the house I'm working on at the moment we've gone for a matt, textured wet wall in dark grey. It's not installed yet, but the samples look great and much, much nicer than the pictures of it online (Linda Barker Graphite Elements).

MrBobLoblaw · 27/03/2019 20:07

Yep, Metro Tiles already look dated and a bit naff imo.

The latest in thing is geometric tiles (small hexagonal etc) paired with statement pattern floor tiles like the floor that @Wonnacott35 posted.

Our bathroom is small so we went for really large oversized tiles on the walls which worked really well and make it seem much bigger. We did it on the cheap though so it's not that snazzy tbh.

tiredandgrumpy · 27/03/2019 20:20

Hope the link below works, but I love our odyssey epoque tiles on the floor. They are usually shown with metro tiles on the walls, which I really wasn't keen on, so just went with very simple large white tiles. I'm really pleased. The floor looks special enough and I think metro tiles would have been too fussy (plus a nightmare to keep clean).

Have you been into a topps tiles showroom? I can never find anything I like on their website but went into one and was really impressed with their range (lots and lots of choice). I think metro has its place but has sadly been over done. I say that as someone who has them in my bathroom.

Sashkin · 27/03/2019 21:03

We have metro tiles, but we put them in in 2008 so yes they are definitely over by now.

I'd be looking at marble or something like Pinksparklycat posted above. Large rectangular tiles.

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 27/03/2019 21:09

I love metro tiles, but the Attingham ones are hardly a major departure, are they? 50s house would have square tiles, surely? Something like this? goo.gl/images/wNd24K

SchnitzelVonKrumm · 27/03/2019 21:12

My sister in law has hotel-style travertine in her bathroom. Hideous.

DixieLandReject · 27/03/2019 21:14

Travertine was the height of fashion in 2006 Grin

thatwouldbeanecumenicalmatter · 27/03/2019 21:59

😂 Ditto Slightlyjaded I do the same about turn whenever I see gold coloured fixtures in bathrooms.

Sorry OP don't ask me, I recently put up those glossy bumpy tiles around my bath. Don't really care what other people think as I think they look good. I do recommend going to a showroom though - I kept changing my mind in Topps tiles as they currently have a gorgeous selection of tiles.

buzzy1 · 27/03/2019 22:15

We recently had wood effect tiles put in the bathroom -on the floor, bath panel and adjoining wall. It looks good against white tiles on the remaining walls.
