AIBU to ask people to just spend 2 minutes looking at these pictures? *MNHQ warning for images containing items relating to Child Sexual Abuse*

Europol are once again asking members of the public for help with solving child sex abuse cases. In many explicit photos of children there are clues in the backgrounds (objects / scenery) that can help Europol identify the locations the images were taken, and help therefore identify where the exploited children have come from and find the perpetrators. Europol are therefore asking for the public to help identify objects / scenery from the backgrounds of some explicit photos taken of children. All explicit material / images of children have been removed from the pictures before being posted by Europol. I figure Mumsnet with a large international readership may well have at least one member who can identify an item / location from one of the images posted, so if we can all spend 2 minutes viewing the images it may well help Europol with their investigations.

I dislike trigger warnings as a whole. This is an interesting article on them archive.li/v661r

SaskiaRembrandt · 27/03/2019 11:49

KitKat, I don't see why it needed changing either.

Anyhoo, I've reported the post and asked them to edit it to something more descriptive of your post.

Haworthia · 27/03/2019 11:57

“Images related to child sexual abuse” is a gross misrepresentation of what those images show.

No way would I click on that link after reading that description.

SaskiaRembrandt · 27/03/2019 12:05

I've had a response:

Thanks for getting in touch. Whilst we understand where you're coming from, we do think we need to warn our users that this content relates to child sexual abuse, as it could well be upsetting for some users.

So I've responded and asked that they mention that there is no explicit content.

Prequelle · 27/03/2019 12:07

Maybe mumsnet would be interested in the lack of evidence surrounding trigger warnings

SaskiaRembrandt · 27/03/2019 12:10

Prequelle, they might be - maybe hit the report button and send them the link.

Well done for posting - there was a thread about a year ago when people recognised items - I've been meaning to check back since but forgot so it is good to have this posted sometimes.

Sadly I didn't recognise anything but the ombre octagon pattern on the red football shirt looks really familiar - and I don't watch football. Even if someone doesn't recognise the K&K logo might be worth posting to say who manufactured it. Even if it is a rip-off the mainstream manufacturer might have some idea of where rip offs are frequent?

Bump.

CallMeRachel · 27/03/2019 12:38

MNHQ should have edited to say Help Interpol identify items and locations in global child sex abuse investigation

There's no images shown there which show anyone being abused.
Images have been carefully cropped prior to the appeal being issued, some are tiny.
It's obvious some of the photos have been taken while abuse has been happening guess that particular room so that's why it's important for the victims that we stop all this ridiculous squealing and feeling all queasy and reporting threads and actually do something to help.

Share, share, share.

This is something that I've taken from the Madeleine McCann documentary series. Society as a whole is that afraid and upset about child abuse that we just turn away from it, because we can't bear to face it. But by doing so we are allowing it to carry on. We need to make changes, this post is a start. Not sure what else we can be doing as individuals. I want to do more, it's just horrific.

Someone on the documentary said if the volume of child abuse cases was terrorism cases then we would be throwing £billions at it, not £millions.

Even news outlets limit what is written because the public don't want to keep hearing about it Sad we need to stop thinking about how uncomfortable it makes us and do something about it.
