To think stockpiling for Brexit seems too OTT?

Just that, really.

Perhaps it just makes me too anxious to think we could be short of food, and as a result, I don't want to think about it.

I've asked friends and family, every one of them has had a little giggle and thinks it's ridiculous.

There are even people stockpiling water.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/03/2019 16:24

I'm guessing they're stockpiling water as the chemicals to filter it apparently run out in 3 days

That's not a long time...

araiwa · 20/03/2019 16:24

We're certainly stockpiling this thread repeatedly

ElizabethMainwaring · 20/03/2019 16:25

Look on prepping and Brexit boards. You will find lots of opinions there. It's fascinating.

backmassageplease · 20/03/2019 16:26

Laurie Wtf, would that really happen? Shock

It's not wholly unreasonable, but hopefully it will be unnecessary. (Hopefully we won't end up leaving at all, but that hope grows ever dimmer.)

backmassageplease · 20/03/2019 16:27

It just doesn't make any logical sense to me. Surely if running out of clean water was a real possibility, there would be more of a general frenzy about the general population?

OP posts:
ElizabethMainwaring · 20/03/2019 16:27

Well, you have started 'thinking about it' now.

LaurieFairyCake · 20/03/2019 16:27

Well the water companies have released a statement saying not to worry

I'm not convinced

Sitdownstandup · 20/03/2019 16:28

Do you think everyone you've asked would tell you the truth?

ElizabethMainwaring · 20/03/2019 16:29

Just go onto the prepping and Brexit boards.

longwayoff · 20/03/2019 16:29

Hopefully not required but I took, £500 cash out today to keep in house, who knows what might happen.

PrawnOfCreation · 20/03/2019 16:30

would that really happen?

No idea. Who knows. Wrt stockpiling I'm simply doing the same as the army, the nhs, and other big business and "forward purchasing". I can either be wrong, and ill have a little chuckle to myself as I eat through stuff I would have bought anyways, or risk my kids being hungry or not getting enough fruit or dairy for example. I'd rather be wrong.

Belenus · 20/03/2019 16:32

Surely if running out of clean water was a real possibility, there would be more of a general frenzy about the general population?

Well they'd have to A. know it and B. believe it. Many of the people I know just don't believe it could happen. There's also a large element of "don't be silly, the UK can't run out of water, it rains too much". There's a great deal of ignorance involved in how water is processed.

If you don't want to stockpile OP then don't - it's not compulsory. And since we're meant to be leaving the EU next Friday it wouldn't really be stockpiling, more panic buying.

backmassageplease · 20/03/2019 16:32

Do you think everyone you've asked would tell you the truth?

Yes. I can spot a fibber quite easily and they were very clearly amused by my question.

OP posts:
FudgeBrownie2019 · 20/03/2019 16:32

The thing is, if you ask anyone in real life they'll never tell you if they are stockpiling because they'll think they'll be ransacked if people know, and the more I read threads on this the more I realise that I probably ought to buy a few bits to shove in the garage to keep us going.

backmassageplease · 20/03/2019 16:34

Fudge the people I've asked are very close family and friends. I doubt they think I'll ransack their house!

And even if we do run short after Brexit for a while, ransacking sounds very 'end of the world'/apocalypse' to me.

OP posts:
ElizabethMainwaring · 20/03/2019 16:37

Like I said, if you are interested about what may happen, and why people prep and stockpile (for whatever reason) then look on the boards about this instead of squabbling.

backmassageplease · 20/03/2019 16:39

Elizabeth Do you have a link? I can't find it under preppers

ElizabethMainwaring · 20/03/2019 16:42

Sorry, I can't do links, I'm a bit useless that way. Im certain that there are loads of threads in prepping and Brexit. A poster called Bellinisurge is particularly interesting and illuminating.

InterchangeableEmma · 20/03/2019 16:43

The period for stockpiling has passed. If you were to start bulk buying stuff now that'd be panic buying and I don't think anyone would advise that.

ElizabethMainwaring · 20/03/2019 16:43

Cath, but the op is asking about Brexit prepping. She wants advice.

TheWomanin12B · 20/03/2019 16:46

Most people don't want to believe it. These are the people who will be panic buying next week.

If you don't think our Government would put us in that position, I don't think you've been paying attention.

MinisterforCheekyFuckery · 20/03/2019 16:55

I don't necessarily think there will be massive food shortages but I do think prices will go up so I've been buying extra non-perishable stuff and meat for the freezer when I do my weekly shop for the last couple of months. I don't think it's 'OTT'. If nothing happens then it's all stuff we'll use anyway, if there are shortages or prices rise then I'll be glad of it.
