To think stockpiling for Brexit seems too OTT?

Just that, really.

Perhaps it just makes me too anxious to think we could be short of food, and as a result, I don't want to think about it.

I've asked friends and family, every one of them has had a little giggle and thinks it's ridiculous.

There are even people stockpiling water.

No and I think people who are are utter maniacs. Until I’m sitting famished and malnourished in the midst of a third world country, I will still stand by that.

ElizabethMainwaring · 20/03/2019 17:01

Well Cath, you were proved right by the above poster.

Tensixtysix · 20/03/2019 17:01

Stockpiling water? Get a Sawyer mini filter. I do lots of wild camping so have all the gear for a quick getaway to the mountains.

If I had to...

ElizabethMainwaring · 20/03/2019 17:03

I take it that you're not in Dudley, tensixtysix?

Tensixtysix · 20/03/2019 17:04

Nah! In the West country. Don't even have to pay tolls on the bridge Grin

ethelfleda · 20/03/2019 17:05

We're certainly stockpiling this thread repeatedly

BloodyDisgrace · 20/03/2019 17:28

I agree. Seems an exagerated, panic-driven reaction to me. (by the way I voted to remain. And I do have a huge fear towards the future outside EU)

Mammylamb · 20/03/2019 17:29

Well, it’s better to be safe than sorry. So, I’ve done a wee bit of stockpiling. It’ll all get eaten anyway!

Sitdownstandup · 20/03/2019 17:36

Do you think it's an exaggerated reaction because you think No Deal isn't a sufficiently realistic possibility, or because you think there won't be any disruption to the supply chain if we do leave with No Deal?

JustHereForASec · 20/03/2019 17:36

Do some of these friends and family have freezers full of food anyway op? Do they have a few tins in, in case of illness curtailing their visits to the shop? A tin of marvel in a cupboard for if they can't get milk?

ElizabethMainwaring · 20/03/2019 17:41

Without being over presumptuous, I would guess that the op thinks that it is an exaggerated reaction because they have never experienced a national crisis. We are all very complacent and we think that the powers that be will look after us. It's very sad.

Brian9600 · 20/03/2019 17:42

I have to take prescription medication daily. Luckily mine has a long shelf life and I got an extra supply last year just in case of problems. If there aren’t any problems, I just won’t have to ask for a repeat prescription for a while. Seems a no-brainier to me. I really feel for people who need meds that don’t last- it’s a very worrying time.

I also have lots of long life food in (tins etc) of the sort we’ll eat anyway.

I think of it this way- what are the chances that we end up with no deal and it gives rise to a period of shortages? Even the most optimistic person must think there is some chance of this- shall we say 1/100? That’s not v likely. Then again, it’s a lot more likely than your house burning down this year and you still insure against fire. So, to the extent you are able, it makes sense to take some precautions.

I think people tend towards normalcy bias- because everything has always been fine, it will continue to be so. And this may well be right- certainly hope so. We’re in uncharted waters though- the biggest political crisis of my lifetime. It doesn’t seem silly to me to plan for contingencies, especially if you can do so on a no cost basis.

Did the Marvel dried milk reference give away my 70s generation!

Parker231 · 20/03/2019 17:49

If there is a no deal Brexit at the end of next week which is a real possibility following today’s news, there will undoubtedly be shortages of fresh food and probably other foods arriving through the EU. Look at where the food you eat regularly comes from and read up on how the UK’s supply chain works. I’m really surprised that at this late stage in the process that people aren’t aware of where their food comes from and how it arrives into the UK.

ginghambox · 20/03/2019 17:50

Don't worry the resident remain prepper will be along shortly to advise/Preach.

Brian9600 · 20/03/2019 17:56

Also in relation to Parker’s post, don’t assume that what you eat will be unaffected if it’s not from the EU. Supply problems (such as delays at ports) will affect foods from everywhere. Even UK grown food will be scarce (if there are supply issues from the EU) as people will buy whatever is available.

As I say above, I hope none of this happens and I don’t think it’s necessarily likely. But it’s also not impossible.

ElizabethMainwaring · 20/03/2019 17:59

And don't forget the hysteria in the shops either. When that kicks in it will be a night mare. As soon as any shortage at all is mentioned you can guarantee that it will go bananas at asda et al.

Petalflowers · 20/03/2019 18:10

Anyone else humming ‘Marvellous, less fat too’ to themselves?

I did notice a few weeks back after one of the votes or Brexit deadlines, the pasta, tinned tomato and other shelves in my local supermarket seemed to be emptier than normal. I think panic buying may have occurred then, but seems to have calmed down, although will probably increase again in the next couple of weeks.

FriarTuck · 20/03/2019 18:15

they were very clearly amused by my question
Maybe they were amused because they have their stash of Brexit toilet rolls safely under the bed and can't believe you've not thought of it Smile

backmassageplease · 20/03/2019 18:17

The one thing I have noticed not available at all in shops (and the one thing I always have bloody stockpiled), is Zoflora Grin

The EU have now said that they will not grant an extension unless the WA is voted through the House of Commons. As it has failed twice, that’s seems very unlikely.

Clavinova · 20/03/2019 19:14

The water industry is reliant to a large extent on chemicals imported from the EU and the “overwhelming majority” come through ports such as Immingham.

Defra said there is “no suggestion” that the flow at these ports should be “adversely affected” by leaving without a deal.

It stressed water will continue to be safe and of the same quality customers expect when the UK leaves the EU.

Ofwat is working closely with Defra–the water companies and others concerned on the arrangements being put in place.

Sixteen of ABP's ports handle nearly two million tonnes of forest products in each year

Ayr - Barrow - Barry - Cardiff - Garston - Goole - Grimsby - Hull - Immingham - Ipswich - King's Lynn - Lowestoft - Newport - Silloth - Swansea - Troon

The Port of Barrow handles wood pulp shipments on behalf of the adjacent Kimberly-Clark manufacturing plant.

No and I think people who are are utter maniacs. Until I’m sitting famished and malnourished in the midst of a third world country, I will still stand by that.

This time last year I was snowed in for 5 days. It took the local food shops weeks to get back to normal stock levels. We're now trying to extract ourselves from the world's largest trading block, quite possibly without a deal. Personally I think you'd have to be mad to think this government will cope and it will all go smoothly. Under the circumstances, having a bit of extra loo roll and a few items of longlife food around is just sensible. But it would have been better to have started buying it months ago, rather than now.

ValleyoftheHorses · 20/03/2019 19:20

Stockpiling has happened by now. With a week and 2 days to go it’s panic buying now and no don’t do it.
