Hello Hello,

We’d like to draw your attention to our new AIBU? podcast hosted by Lucy Porter and Aasmah Mir (download on Acast, Spotify or Apple Podcasts).

The first three episodes are up now and feature Lucy and Aasmah discussing the dilemmas, modern etiquette problems and weird pieces of behaviour thrown up in AIBU? threads - plus each week they drag in a celebrity guest (Ed Byrne, Mark Dolan and Tim Dowling among others) and for a quickfire YABU/YANBU round.

You can find out more here (including Lucy and Aasmah’s own personal views on penguin bollards).

Basically it’s our shot at seeing whether AIBU can translate successfully into podcast form (given that quite a few other people were already trying it without so much as a by-your-leave, tsk). We’d love to know what you think - please give it a try on Apple Podcasts, Acast or Spotify and as ever we’d love to have your feedback as it’s very much a work in progress.
And of course do feel free to share far and wide.

Big thanks in advance.

I really enjoyed it. Thanks!

Yeeasss

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 21/03/2019 08:02

That gin does rather sound like it's being poured into a tin mug. Which it well might tbf.

RowanMumsnet · 21/03/2019 10:14

Hello

Thanks for all your thoughts so far

On Stitcher: yes, thanks for the prompt - our production team will get on it

On including Classics threads: the plan is to do this in upcoming episodes - do suggest any you'd like to see featured

On the sound levels: we'll ask the production team for their thoughts - thanks for flagging this

Cheers!

RowanMumsnet · 21/03/2019 10:31

On the sound levels, here's the production team's feedback: Acast sets limits on volume so we have to work within those, but from now on we'll be using different equipment that allows greater compression levels, meaning it will sound louder.

Thanks everyone for flagging

champagneplanet · 21/03/2019 10:38

I liked it, it's chatty and light. Look forward to more.

Jellyfloodagain · 21/03/2019 11:26

I just listened to them all and I enjoyed them but I agree the wine/gin noise sounds like someone peeing and that part was far too loud and really irritated me.

Myimaginarycathasfleas · 21/03/2019 12:09

I've enjoyed them all, have subscribed and can see this being a regular listen. Classics is a good shout, there are some buried treasures there that deserve an airing. Out of interest, does content need to be restricted to AIBU? Or is this a taster with a view to expanding across other topics?

SileneOliveira · 21/03/2019 12:24

Listened to the first podcast this morning in the car and really enjoyed it! No sound issues at all through the car speakers and my phone.

MrFMercury · 21/03/2019 13:31

Once the sound levels are sorted it'll sound better.
Content wise, I like the presenters but it's currently feeling too much like "this person posted this and someone else posted this AIBU" and not any real attention being paid to the actual questions. The 'A List Adjudicator ' isn't quite working. If they say anything other than yes or no they seemed to be hurried by the presenters. Maybe explain the concept to the guests more clearly?
It could definitely be longer, it might feel less rushed and at times a bit frantic with the giggling and dashing from topic to topic. Language wise I expected it to be worse tbh. Mumsnet is known in part for frank exchanges of views liberally peppered with words such as cunt and twatbadger and cockwomble.
It's a new venture, I'm sure you'll change stuff around before you bit on what really works.

TulipsTulipsTulips · 21/03/2019 20:10

I really like podcasts but would prefer to hear from ordinary mums, rather than celebrities. It sounded a little false to me.

kateandme · 21/03/2019 21:42

cna you put it onto podbean please JustineMumsnet

nannynick · 22/03/2019 06:42

Sound balance much better on episode 3. Maybe the Acast has tweeted something on the Digital Insertion. Johnny Ball was great as the A-Lister.

nannynick · 22/03/2019 06:43

Tweeted - dam you autocorrect.
Tweeked

champagneplanet · 22/03/2019 07:58

I definitely think they could be longer, I'd be happy to listen for double the current time, and there shouldn't be any trouble for content.

Maybe a different non celebrity guest mum every week would be a good idea? It could all be very anonymous.

Sanguineclamp · 22/03/2019 09:04

I think the concept is good. Particularly because I think there is such a wealth of humour and information in some threads, that it seems a waste that they are just left to float in the cyber ether once they're finished. And after all, every other media outlet seems to be exploiting the threads, so good that MNHQ are "taking back control" as it were. (As a passionate Remainer, I never thought I would be using that phrase in a positive way! Confused ). Anyway ... .

I definitely liked the way the presenters were respectful about posters and content, and didn't mention specific nns.

Overall I quite liked it. I wasn't blown away but it was fine to listen to while doing something else if that doesn't sound too impolite! Not as good as "Fortunately" but there again Fi and Jane are radio goddesses.

Sometimes I felt that the amount of laughter being generated was not justified by the content. It was if the producer (director?) had given instructions such as "remember now you must all be a bit giddy". The laughter had to be genuine or it becomes irritating.

Lucy Porter is a real find. Fantastic. And she and AM are able to go off on interesting tangents which is good.

I disagree that it needs to be longer. A good podcast leaves you wanting more.

Also, I think the "celebrity" input is fine. The programme needs to have a focus and that provides it. I'm not sure having ordinary mumsnetters on would work in the current context. But maybe at some point you could invite a selection mumsnetters to discuss certain topics and record/edit the best exchanges/contributions and then include that in the broadcast?

Agree about needing to widen content beyond AIBU. Classics a good start. But how about topics that aren't really topics ifyswim and are more "Mnsnet themes"; CFs, parking, how often do you really wash bedclothes, the Mumsnet chicken that goes on giving, that sort of thing?

Overall 6/10! Keep going!

I found it on Overcast too, I notice that wasn't listed above.

I hated it. I can't see the point, it doesn't add anything to the forum. It's effectively just a couple of extra opinions on any subject. What's the point in that?

BloodyDisgrace · 22/03/2019 15:55

Awesome idea, thank you. Thoroughly enjoyed listening to the first episodes while crocheting. Please keep going; it's either you and Richard Dawkins for me once I've exhausted all Queens of England podcasts, and I crochet a lot.

BloodyDisgrace · 22/03/2019 15:58

Oh good, someone already mentioned sound, so it is not me being misogynistic thinking the voices were rather shrill at the beginning but then I either got used to it, or twiddled with my own controls on mac. But if you could adjust the tembre or whatever makes it a bit softer, then it would be great.

lostvoice · 22/03/2019 17:05

I would like it to be longer, so they can go in to a bit more detail
The celeb bit does seem rushed, would be good to have a quick fire round and then go in to one or two in a little more detail maybe 🤷🏽‍♀️

OhioOhioOhio · 22/03/2019 19:34

Yes to all the people who say it sounds like someone is peeing down the toilet.

It's too bland and staged. It has potential but it sounds very well prepared and not at all like witty banter. Like a badly written play.

Sorry.

BeanBag7 · 23/03/2019 06:39

I felt a bit "meh" about it. I thought it would be about crazy neighbours and bridezillas, but it was all very light like "what food do you like that others don't". That's not why I read AIBU.

I also thought the pouring drink noise sounded like someone having a wee.

Others have mentioned the sound levels, which I also found a problem in spotify. The first half was fine and then it got much quieter.

VeryLittleOwl · 23/03/2019 08:26

Downloading on iTunes now, but you've got a rogue apostrophe in the blurb.

Avallamp · 23/03/2019 09:34

Enjoyed the content (ep4), but the volume was all over the place. Lucy very quiet, so kept having to turn the volume up, then she the ads came on, being deafened. (The ads were at the normal volume of my other podcasts). Likewise with Aasmah's laughter being very loud, was she sat closer to the mic? Johnny Ball's volume was fine.

(I know I'm going on about the volume, but i was constantly turning the volume up or down, not had to do that with any other podcasts)
