Our AIBU? podcast - let us know what you think

Hello Hello,

We’d like to draw your attention to our new AIBU? podcast hosted by Lucy Porter and Aasmah Mir (download on Acast, Spotify or Apple Podcasts).

The first three episodes are up now and feature Lucy and Aasmah discussing the dilemmas, modern etiquette problems and weird pieces of behaviour thrown up in AIBU? threads - plus each week they drag in a celebrity guest (Ed Byrne, Mark Dolan and Tim Dowling among others) and for a quickfire YABU/YANBU round.

You can find out more here (including Lucy and Aasmah’s own personal views on penguin bollards).

Basically it’s our shot at seeing whether AIBU can translate successfully into podcast form (given that quite a few other people were already trying it without so much as a by-your-leave, tsk). We’d love to know what you think - please give it a try on Apple Podcasts, Acast or Spotify and as ever we’d love to have your feedback as it’s very much a work in progress.
And of course do feel free to share far and wide.

Big thanks in advance.

@JustineMumsnet, any chance you could put it up on stitcher too?

OhioOhioOhio · 20/03/2019 06:00

Sounds good.

We'll look into it!

@PoliticalBiscuit

I liked it. I think it balanced a few things quite well and I think it kept the anonymity of the posters quite well - and as a poster comments above it was not snide 'in judgement' of posters.

I liked the conversational tone and like most things I think it will warm up once it gets going. I found the two presenters very easy to listen to.

The only thing I would say is that on Mumsnet it's difficult to find real people in real life who also do it (because I realise there's a secret code and you're not supposed to tell anyone Grin )

So it's nice to hear the forum talked about in a conversational style but it felt a teeny tiny bit like it was an outsider's view, rather than Mumsnetters catching up.

Little bits like - "We'll get our producer to post..." And the Male voice over saying something like "To contact them" rather than "us" in reference to MNHQ.

It's similar to how the forum always seems to balance itself slightly better when MNHQ blue posters pop up conversationally in off topic threads, it just has more of a community feel. So if there was a way of bridging that divide in the podcast it would be better Gin

Totally agree with you PoliticalBiscuit and we've given similar feedback so hopefully we'll get better at that as the series evolves. (Thanks so much for the thoughtful comments Smile)

I also liked the presenters (like Lucy Porter anyway) and their chatty style.

Totally agree that the adverts are much louder than necessary but love a good podcast and will continue with this.

Thank You.

BlancheDuBlah · 20/03/2019 08:39

So glad you're doing this and rightly claiming it as a MN thing as TV people like This Morning among others seem to be stealing the format.

Subscribed.

I listened in the bath and quite enjoyed it. I'd never listened to a podcast in my life before this one. It was easy to find and access.
I wasn't expecting the discussion about afternoon sex though- and had my phone on top volume blaring out. With my DCs around, I wanted to turn it down but was in the bath so had to let it blare on for all to hear... Maybe I need to use Siri.
I will listen again. I would like more/ different points of view represented though- and more funny real comments from actual (anonymised) mumsnetters.
Perhaps a look back/ review/ recap of the best bits of a Classic thread in each episode?

AmericanHousewifeFan · 20/03/2019 09:31

I just listened to the first one and really enjoyed it. Looking forward to the next one. Love listening to podcasts while I work.

Can I second MrsDevlin's idea about revisiting classic threads. That's a great idea.

Yes classic threads - great idea. txs

Yes defo needs a marker if an episode is child safe/not child safe in terms of language and content. I typically put podcasts on in place of radio during the day. DS2 is too little to understand but won't be soon.

BertieBotts · 20/03/2019 10:03

Just started listening on Spotify and it's extremely quiet compared to other audio on there - perhaps that is why ads seem very loud in comparison? I've had to turn my speakers all the way up. Can you maybe boost the volume?

YesimstillwatchingNetflix · 20/03/2019 12:03

This would make me less likely to post on AIBU to be honest.

I realise this isn't a private forum, but I still think it's poor form when content is lifted from here and published / broadcast elsewhere without the posters permission, whether that's done by the daily mail or by mumsnet itself.

Will the podcast be asking OPs for permission to discuss their question on the podcast? I'm guessing a lot of people would say no, especially people who have been slammed in the responses.

cornflakegirl · 20/03/2019 13:08

I just listened to the first one, and I really wanted to like it. I read a lot of Mumsnet, listen to a lot of podcasts and like Lucy Porter and Aasmah Mir, so I ought to be target audience. But it just felt a bit contrived and flat. I'm going to be sticking with Fortunately with Fi and Jane, sorry.

Elphame · 20/03/2019 13:44

I am finding the animated advert on the side panel so intensely irritating that I'm not going to click on it to watch and despite being a gin lover Silent Hill gin is now off my shopping list.

JenMumma · 20/03/2019 14:59

Aghhh what a waste😳😖 I REALLY WANTED it to be great !! But I found it really contrived, droning and that awful incessant giggling aghhhh. It's not for me 😢

nannynick · 20/03/2019 16:37

I've listened to the first two and quite like it. However the sound levels jump all over the place. So fixing the sound levels would be a good improvement and should be fairly easy in the final edit before upload.

murree · 20/03/2019 16:42

I'm half way through episode 2. I'm liking it so far!
My only gripe is it is so quite when the presenters speak I can barely hear it. I tried to put it on whilst i was in the shower but there was no way i was hearing it over the water even with the volume on max...

BertieBotts · 20/03/2019 17:29

I don't know, TBH it's not that different from the weekly talk round up which has always been a thing.

ketchupormayo · 20/03/2019 18:37

This seems great thanks!

redexpat · 20/03/2019 19:47
  1. The sound levels vary. I had it turned up to max and was still struggling to hear it in the car.
  2. I quite enjoyed the presenters. It has the feel of enjoying adult company - like Graham and Maria on r2 saturday mornings. I felt they kept me company on the drive home.
  3. Get some female guests.
  4. Please get a new sponsor or get a new jingle for the sponsor. That tinkling noise is not what I need to hear when Im driving at 130kph on the motorway - it makes me need to pee.
BertieBotts · 20/03/2019 20:39

Yeah the gin pouring does sound a bit like a bloke pissing into a toilet bowl.

Autumnchill · 20/03/2019 21:13

Enjoyed it but a bit tame. Liked the hosts and the guest spot could be longer but personally I'd prefer it to be a lot more 'adult'. Felt too clean cut

AlpacasAreLlamas · 20/03/2019 21:28

Terrible.

Wonderbag · 20/03/2019 21:33

Gosh it’s tricky isn’t it? So hard to not sound like Joan & Jericha.
It’s no where near as good as reading the threads. I really like Lucy Porter and she’s doing a good job of it, but it’s not even our best material! Grin
Visiting the classics threads is a good idea.

MiddleClassProblem · 20/03/2019 22:57

Had a listen to the first one and it felt like a daytime tv version of AIBU, picking the lightest AIBUs. I’m not really sure the point. It wasn’t funny enough for it to go anywhere.

It was all just a bit candy floss but tbf I prefer podcasts like My Dad Wrote A Porno so maybe I’m not your audience. Anyway it’s not representative of AIBU I know even within the topics they covered. I know there would be wittier post than the ones they skimmed over.
