To think there are no performers Anymore?

Just watched "Bohemian Rhapsody" and am now watching that Liveaid performance on YouTube.

It struck me just how talented Freddie Mercury was but also what a performer.. and I can't think of anyone in the charts at the minute who is such a performer! The only one I can think of is Robbie Williams but he doesn't have the talent that Freddie had, although I do love him!

Are there still performers? Freddie was just mesmerising and obviously one of a kind!

Perhaps the way in which bands developed and some of the opportunities to play in places such as the back room or upstairs in clubs and pubs enabled them to develop in a way that is not so often available nowadays. The same could be said about other parts of the entertainment industry, such as the opportunities given from music hall or working mens clubs to performers.

Muse put on an excellent show.

SellFridges · 17/03/2019 20:23

Robbie Williams.
Take That.
Muse.
Bastille.
Florence + the Machine.

Some I’ve seen and been impressed as much by the set and the showmanship as the music.

Little Mix didn’t do badly when I took DD but their lack of live band was a real drawback.

I think @ForalltheSaints has a point.

Bands used to hone their art in pubs and if they didn’t engage the audience live they didn’t get anywhere.

Videos for YouTube etc are a very different way of communicating aren’t they.

I think if you're looking for good live performers in the charts, you're going to struggle. Yes, there are some, but chart music and live music are pretty separate things.

I've seen several really good live bands who are excellent performers, have superb stage presence, get a crowd dancing and are an excellent night out, but you won't see them in the charts. In the last couple of years for example, the best gigs I've been to were Gogol Bordello, The Lucky Chops, Steve van Zandt and the Disciples of Soul... all excellent and popular touring bands.

I'm seeing Muse later this year, a friend of mine raves about them.

Saw the title and immediately thought of Nick Cave, a complete master, in an old school entertainment tradition

MushroomTree · 17/03/2019 20:33

Not seen Prince mentioned yet

CSIblonde · 17/03/2019 20:37

I think by performer you mean stars who also have personality & charisma: & instant rapport with their audience.... So....
Pink
Jessie J (out Whitneyed Whitney's I have Nothing on Singer 2018 & anihilated Celine's muzak version of My Heart will go on too, for good measure )
Jeremy Jordan, who is musical theatre: v funny, his it's All Coming Back to me Now live is really funny & spot on (even with dire backing singers who can't stop drooling over him)

supersop60 · 17/03/2019 20:46

You have to go and see a live show. On Tv (or equivalent) you only see a small amount of what these performers do. If you see a few live 2 hour concerts, you might change your mind OP.

ToffeePennie · 17/03/2019 20:56

See to me Queen are dire. I don’t like their music/their sound. I don’t find Freddie Mercury engaging or frankly interesting.
I’ve seen Lady Gaga live. She was phenomenal. I know the older generation are a bit bonkers for pink. From what I’ve seen she’s brilliant. These two ladies spark something in me that none of the drab, boring Queen music can even dream to ignite.

ShinyMe Saw Muse just over a week ago at the Oracle Arena in Oakland, California. You are in for a fantastic show. I’m not kidding from the second they hit the stage until they left, they were bloody relentless, the entire arena was on its feet dancing. That’s including DH, well, I say dancing, he tapped his feet a lot and nodded his head kinda in time a lot but honestly that’s a lot for him because he never dances - never.

Have to say I’ve seen a LOT of amazing performers and spectacular productions in the last 40 years of going to gigs and I’d put Muse right up there with the best. The show I saw on their Drones tour 3 years ago would be pretty high on the list too.

RJnomore1 · 17/03/2019 21:38

I don’t think Prince was mentioned as a current amazing performer on account of being a bit dead...😂

ShinyMe · 17/03/2019 21:39

Thanks @WarpedGalaxy! I'm not seeing them til June or July, but I'm looking forward to it. They've also got Tom Morello with them I think, who I've seen with Bruce Springsteen before, and who I know is a good performer.

Bruce is the ultimate live performer. I only discovered him in 2009 sadly but I've seen him a few times and he's always been awesome.
