Letterbox menace solved!

Printsofwhales · 16/03/2019 15:44

Delivering leaflets can present occasional hazards. The stiff bristles in letterboxes can scrape the skin off your knuckles, your fingers could become prey to dogs or the leaflet just crumbles on insertion, to name a few. I have tried the scissor tongs shown here LINK EDITED OUT BY MNHQ and it seems ideal. It is thin enough and long enough to go through every letterbox I have tried, and, as the photo shows, is an ideal size for leaflets. Usually you can simply slot in the leaflet, insert in the letterbox, open slightly and withdraw. The letterbox brushes tend to stop the leaflet being pulled back out. Alternatively once fully inserted rotate 90 degrees, open slightly so the leaflet falls out, close, rotate back and withdraw.
If you try this make sure it is a thin scissor tongs so it cannot get stuck
in or damage a letterbox.
As a bonus it also speeds up delivery.

The only Letterbox Menace is you OP, I hate junk mail.

Revenge of the tongs.
Amazon keep showing me an ad for the tongs.
My Arkwright flaps are tightening involuntary!

How is unaddressed junk mail actually legally allowed? Considering that it's just forcibly shoving rubbish into a stranger's house, what constitutes whether it's permitted by law or not?

Could I just post my empty crisp packets or chip wrappers through a letterbox and, if challenged, claim that it's marketing material (in the case of the chip wrapper, it's obviously a subliminal ploy to make people book a holiday to Athens)?

If it's strictly leaflets only, is there a limit to quantity and can they be second hand? Could I save up a year's worth of junk flyers that come through my door and spend twenty minutes plopping the lot in one big heap through my neighbour's letterbox?

Do I need to carry two different sets of BBQ tongs for delivering junk
mail to meat-eating households and vegetarian ones?

Was Johnny Nash delivering takeaway leaflets with the aid of a fish slice and pondering on these exact same conundra when he wrote 'There Are More Questions Than Answers' ?

OP, rather than spamming MN, why not just have a load of leaflets printed up to promote the BBQ tongs and then use said tongs whilst delivering them through all of the doors in your neighbourhood?

Webuilt, if you put a stamp and an address on something royal mail have to deliver it. Some irresponsible students nothing to do with me oh no may have experimented with this years ago when stamps were cheaper. And yes, they'll deliver empty crisp packets thus adorned.

WeBuiltThisBuffetOnSausageRoll · 17/03/2019 00:17

Oh, yes, Handay - I've been a student too! We experimented with many items in said manner, the piece de resistance probably being a slice of nicely-browned toast. Now, THAT was not easy affixing a stamp and address label to! Quite crumbly and averse to adhesive.

It arrived intact, though, and my friend was delighted with it.... after a fashion. It would probably be intercepted now and reported and flagged as highly suspicious in these less innocent times.

However, my query chiefly relates to unstamped items - whether delivered by the postman, local takeaways or even charity bags (which nobody ever seems to attempt to collect anyway, full or unused - so you couldn't even argue that they were only temporarily intending to lend you their rubbish before taking it back a week later).

Aside from the official Royal Mail employee, just who is allowed to stuff rubbish through my letterbox - and what manner of rubbish is and is not allowed?

Could I legally feed yesterday's veg peelings through an unsuspecting householder's door? Does it make a difference if I stuff an equal share of them through everybody on the street's doors? Do I need to wear a yellow hi-viz jacket - does that make it legal? Confused

Lol I think as long as you use the tongs (TM) you'll be fine. Pissing myself at sending a piece of toast. You are probably the reason why postage costs have increased.

JugzyMalone · 19/03/2019 19:21

Love the toast idea. That's tomorrow planned.
