Letterbox menace solved!

Printsofwhales · 16/03/2019 15:44

Delivering leaflets can present occasional hazards. The stiff bristles in letterboxes can scrape the skin off your knuckles, your fingers could become prey to dogs or the leaflet just crumbles on insertion, to name a few. I have tried the scissor tongs shown here LINK EDITED OUT BY MNHQ and it seems ideal. It is thin enough and long enough to go through every letterbox I have tried, and, as the photo shows, is an ideal size for leaflets. Usually you can simply slot in the leaflet, insert in the letterbox, open slightly and withdraw. The letterbox brushes tend to stop the leaflet being pulled back out. Alternatively once fully inserted rotate 90 degrees, open slightly so the leaflet falls out, close, rotate back and withdraw.
If you try this make sure it is a thin scissor tongs so it cannot get stuck
in or damage a letterbox.
As a bonus it also speeds up delivery.

If you put stuff though my letterbox you wouldn't get it out easily, in fact you would be very lucky to get anything through it at all without it being snapped. I have the most unfriendly flap you will ever find.

Designed to prevent fishing rods being pushed in to steal keys and hooks to undo locks. Not only that it is right at the bottom of the door which deters all but the most enthusiastic of leafleters (and thieves). One day I hope to see someone lying on the steps trying to look in the letterbox or poke a thieving device in so I can open the door and bash them on the head.

Unless it is pet related or allotment related or Police burglary notices it will go straight in the bin.

FriarTuck · 16/03/2019 16:47

I wish my postman had some of those, he might put less crap through my letterbox (when I've specifically registered to avoid it!).

Insomnibrat · 16/03/2019 16:48

A hazard during a thunderstorm though, surely...

TrixieFranklin · 16/03/2019 16:52

What the hell

Blatherskite · 16/03/2019 16:53

Anyone else upset that this post is the opposite to what you expected?

I was hoping that "Letterbox menace solved" was going to be some trick to stopping this junk being pushed through my letterbox not tricks to make it easier for the junk deliverers!

GetStrongKeepFighting · 16/03/2019 16:54

Not very bright, OP, if this is an ad.

PigletJohn · 16/03/2019 16:57

Crumble, crumble, crumble.

I make a very nice rhubarb crumble.

killpop · 16/03/2019 17:01

I guess it's not the ideal time of year to have BBQs in the UK, so companies have to come up with alternative uses for tongs to ensure an even sales record.

I don't want sales crap through my door though, try another angle.

GertrudeCB · 16/03/2019 17:17

I don't like leaflets , crumbly or otherwise.

CassandraCross · 16/03/2019 17:18

DontCallMeShitely sounds like you have the letterbox equivalent of Arkwright's tillGrin, must say I like the sound of it!

ColdFingered · 16/03/2019 17:23

Is it some sort of cheeky coded link, so that the OP gets a kickback when we next order from Amazon? Grin (But I thought Mumsnet had that sussed with their own links...)

percheron67 · 16/03/2019 17:23

I would much like a letterbox which eats junk mail. At present, I am toying with the idea of putting it back in the postbox instead of it going into my recycling.

Eliant · 16/03/2019 17:25

I might click on the link, delivering Christmas cards to the neighbours is a risky business.

thecatneuterer · 16/03/2019 17:25

I doubt it's an advertising ploy. I mean how many people on MN can regularly need to deliver leaflets. I'm probably the only one.

MollyHuaCha · 16/03/2019 17:27

I wish people would deliver our leaflets directly into the paper recycling bin.

Yes! Me too...

LouMumsnet · 16/03/2019 17:27

Ooh, we cannot abide stiff bristles or letterbox menaces!

That said, we're afraid this particular menace is a spam poster.

Sorry to disappoint but the OP won't be darkening our door (or our letterbox, for that matter) again.

We'll be zapping this v shortly.

chipsandgin · 16/03/2019 17:28

Niche! If it is an ad it has a very small market OP..(and I'm not sure how many mumsnetters are also leaflet delivery persons - that venn diagram would be a joy to see - but worth a shot eh!)

PoliticalBiscuit · 16/03/2019 17:28

@dontcallmeshitely

I have unfriendly flaps too. Of a different sort 🤣🤣

PigletJohn · 16/03/2019 17:33

with bristles?

Justmuddlingalong · 16/03/2019 17:34

My flaps are rattling today. But then it is very windy here. 🤭

kingfisherblue33 · 16/03/2019 17:35

Oh, @LouMumsnet, please leave the post! It’s made me laugh such a lot.

LouMumsnet · 16/03/2019 17:40

Anyone got bristly flaps?

Asking for a friend.

killpop · 16/03/2019 17:51

My flaps have an actual curtain. Keeps the draft out.

LouMumsnet · 16/03/2019 17:54

One of those little sausage dog shaped draught excluders too, @killpop?

Justmuddlingalong · 16/03/2019 17:56

My flaps need wiped down regularly. They're often dripping with condensation.
