Supermarket job offer

caroline161 · 14/03/2019 14:58

Dd 16 has been offered job in local supermarket 3 evenings a week 5-9 including both Friday and Saturday evenings. Is it a bit unfair of them to expect her to work every Friday and Saturday evening or am I just completely out of touch? She has phoned them to chat about it but they aren't backing down. Her friend has been offered Monday Thursday Sunday. Willing to be told by the mn jury that I am too precious Wink

Why do you think it's unfair? They need someone to work those shifts, that's the job Confused

ataleoftwothenthreethenfour · 14/03/2019 16:35

I think it's strange you would consider it could be unfair.
It's the job, she doesn't have to take it. But that's what they are offering, so if she wants it she has to put up with it.

Eminado · 14/03/2019 16:36

I am really confused at your reaction OP. Lots of people are looking for jobs. Like - desperately looking - and your DD got one. And it's not onerous.

Does your DD not want/need the job? If she doesn't - why did she apply?

Boysey45 · 14/03/2019 16:37

She either takes it or she doesn't, the supermarket isn't being unfair, those are the shifts.

caroline161 · 14/03/2019 16:37

She's going to phone them and tell them she will take it ! I just thought it was a bit unfair as all the things her friends do are Friday and Saturday night and involve getting ready all together. That won't be happening anymore 😏 and also we love all getting together as a family on weekend evenings and now she won't be there. I work some weekends and so my free ones with my family are always very precious. She's just moving away from me and I don't like it Confused

She’s 16, so she won’t be out at the pubs and clubs every Saturday for in the least 2 years, by which time she will have 2 years experience under her belt and in a better position to negotiate more appropriate hours.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 14/03/2019 16:45

I’d probably encourage her to look elsewhere tbh. She might get fed up of never having a night out with her friends.

MarvinMarvinson · 14/03/2019 16:48

It's OK to feel like that op but it really isn't 'unfair'. I work weekends and it's is shit but I knew it was unsociable hours when I applied. Your daughter would have too given that most supermarkets are open in the evenings. You can't really expect a new employee to work their shifts around her social life and desire to get ready with her friends?

rainbowunicorn · 14/03/2019 16:52

Of course it isn't unfair, what a ridiculous thing to say. She has been offered a job which in itself is no easy thing to get. It doesn't sound as if your daughter is the one who has a problem with it anyway. It sounds like you are the only one that thinks it unfair.

TinklyLittleLaugh · 14/03/2019 16:54

Sounds awful to me. I wouldn’t be encouraging one of mine to do it. My kids have had jobs in restaurants and pubs where they worked the odd weekend evening but never both. Whoever dreamt up that rota is taking the piss.

And the poster upthread who mentioned being on taxi duty is making a valid point. Nothing more irritating than your own social life being curtailed by a DC’s job.

cherrryontop · 14/03/2019 16:56

If she was already employed on different shifts and was being pressured to change that would be unfair. But they are advertising a job for this shifts so it's a case of take it or leave it?
If it doesn't work for her that's fine she's under no obligation to do it.

ScreamingValenta · 14/03/2019 16:58

It'll be the shift that needs filling because everyone wants to swap it. Once she's established there, she might be able to change it. Hope the job goes well!

adaline · 14/03/2019 16:58

My kids have had jobs in restaurants and pubs where they worked the odd weekend evening but never both.

Eh? She's not working both. Friday night isn't the weekend, it's a weekday evening. She's working Fridays and Saturdays and has Sundays off, same as millions of other retail/hospitality workers up and down the country!

caroline161 · 14/03/2019 16:59

The job was advertised as a "What times are you available, tick the box" sort of thing. She ticked all the boxes for flexibility! I wrote rotas to cover a 24 hour service and give all my staff every other weekend off x

Chickpea99 · 14/03/2019 17:06

Im sorry OP, but I can’t see the reason of it being ‘unfair’. Shop offered the shift where there is a vacancy and not created a vacancy around your DD. If they offered her given shifts, that means other ones are filled in and they need someone to work given days/hours.

MsOtisRegrets · 14/03/2019 17:06

'she ticked all the box's for flexibility' - now she needs to show that she is flexible and do the shift they have offered.

RedRiverShore · 14/03/2019 17:06

If she hadn’t have ticked all the boxes for flexibility she may not have got the job.

caroline161 · 14/03/2019 17:09

Also I think what her friend has been offered is relevant as they are the shifts that are available. If I had been writing a Rota for 2 new 16-17 year old girls I would have given one of them the Friday and one of them the Saturday. But as pp said if she gets a party invite or if we have a family thing she can ask her friend to cover the shift and she could do her Sunday. It could work well x

Friday AND Saturday evenings are unsociable for a young person. She may get on with it ok but I wouldn’t be surprised if she’s fed up with it fairly quickly.

caroline161 · 14/03/2019 17:12

She's excited about the money and it's in the bakery so she's happy as well. It is really just me Wink

RedRiverShore · 14/03/2019 17:14

When DS worked at a supermarket he managed to swap his days sometimes and he made lots of new friends there, also he liked to do extra shifts so did find it fairly flexible. Once she gets to know people, there may be others that want to swap not just her friend.

GreatDuckCookery6211 · 14/03/2019 17:15

Why what’s wrong with you? Smile

caroline161 · 14/03/2019 17:20

I like her here with me Smile because I love her so much Wink
