To be fed up that so much chocolate now has palm oil in it?

Palm oil is bad for the environment. And it tastes horrible. It used to be that no chocolate had palm oil as an ingredient, now nearly all chocolate has palm oil in it. It has been good for my waistline as the only chocolate for sale next to my office that is palm oil free, is an expensive bar of chocolate at £3 each. But I do miss having a bar of chocolate on a tough day.

Lidl have some good palm oil free chocolates available.

I tried Love Cocoa, which is mostly online but does turn up in Waitrose too. Gorgeous but expensive. It's made by Jamie Cadbury, who I strongly suspect is utterly mortified by what his ancestor's company has been turned into by the american conglomerate who bought Cadburys and trashed it.

Green and Black is nice. But unfortunately is owned by one of the corporate giants who also peddle ucky filth.

PickAChew · 14/03/2019 19:23

Green & Blacks is posh Cadbury!

I can’t understand why chocolate that is Palm Oil free doesn’t have a stamp on the front telling you as much.
I spend ages looking and working it all out.
It’s a selling point now to be palm-oil free. I just don’t get why they don’t point it out to the consumers

porkandbeans · 14/03/2019 19:37

When I recently went to the Netherlands, I had done really good chocolate. It's called Tony's choccolonely. It's fair trade with no palm oil. It's more expensive but definitely worth it. Think they are starting to stock it in Waitrose soon

Anon10 · 14/03/2019 19:39

Just but decent chocolate then. Decent chocolate doesn’t have palm oil in it.

Gorse · 14/03/2019 20:03

Sorry, same gripe - different food, but I'm very fond of oatcakes. In the last couple of years Nairn's, Co op and Tesco (and Uncle Tom Cobbly, no doubt) started to put palm oil in their oatcakes. Then I saw Patterson oatcakes on the Co op shelf. They were palm oil free and even said "Orangutan friendly" on the box! I bought these regularly but now I can't find them anywhere. No one seems to stock them! This I do not understand, what with more awareness these days about climate change and deforestation. Anyone know where I might find them?
Fairly new to MN tho been listening in for a few months.

scaryteacher · 14/03/2019 20:22

Some of the Ritter sport do (the biscuit one), but the milk chocolate ones don't seem to. Agree with Lindt being good.

chillpizza · 14/03/2019 20:29

Pop to Iceland don’t they swear everything they sell is free of palm-oil?

GladAllOver · 14/03/2019 21:00

No, they only claim that their own-brand is palm oil free.

I really really try not to eat stuff with it in. But my stupid body and my dietary requirements make it so with some foods I don’t have a choice. One day I hope it will be in no foods what so ever.

Bibijayne · 14/03/2019 21:20

YANBU. it tastes horrible. All started when Kraft bought Cadburys.

GladAllOver · 14/03/2019 21:24

We don't touch Cadburys now. Nasty oily stuff. Aldi's Moser Roth is far nicer and no palm oil.

Ivegotthree · 14/03/2019 21:25

YANBU.

I can't find any chocolate I like any more.

cantbearsed1 · 15/03/2019 07:54

I am shocked that oatcakes have palm oil in them. I went through a phase of eating lots and there is absolutely no reason to have palm oil in them.
I agree that it is amazing that there is not a stamp that shows something is palm oil free. I am back to reading labels carefully which I haven't done since I tried vegetarianism in the early 80s.

I want a stamp for palm oil free products.

I keep checking chocolate, and pretty much everything else, labels and the blasted stuff is everywhere.

TildaKauskumholm · 15/03/2019 07:58

Patterson oatcakes in tesco and sainsburys here. Only buy choc from Lidl and Aldi now!

Meyrin · 15/03/2019 08:03

We eat Lindt high % cacao 85% and 90%. They're rich and chocolatey and manage to be creamy despite no milk fat.

TedAndLola · 15/03/2019 08:17

Is this what happened to Galaxy Ripples? They were my guilty pleasure until last year when they began to taste like shit. Sob.

cantbearsed1 · 15/03/2019 08:29

Yes it is what happened. I used to love peppermint aeros, they taste like crap now.

ApplesinmyPocket · 15/03/2019 08:38

Gorse you can get Paterson's oatcakes on Amazon.

"Paterson's Rough Oatcakes (Pack of 12)
by Paterson's
Price: £20.91 (£0.70 / 100 g) & FREE delivery"

At about £1.70 per box I suspect that's not as cheap as in a supermarket though!

cranstonmanor · 15/03/2019 09:00

Make your own! So much better.
Buy 500 gram of good cooking chocolate like callbauts, melt it slowly with a tin of condensed milk and 2 tbsp of butter. Pour into a tray, let cool overnight. Cut into squares and wrap the squares individually in cut up swuares of baking sheet like bonbons. They're delicious

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 15/03/2019 09:09

Toblerone is safe :D

PlumCakeChica · 15/03/2019 09:18

Creme eggs taste awful now. I’m going to make a real effort to find palm oil free Easter eggs this year.

PinkHeart5914 · 15/03/2019 09:30

Make your own, the most mumsnet answer!

You can buy palm free chocolate it’s just you have to pay a bit more for it.

Cadbury is one of the biggest sellers still so people must still be buying it, therefore a lot of people either don’t understand the impact palm oil will have on the planet or they like the taste still.
