People tricking you with cheaper food

AIBU to get really annoyed with people substituting cheaper alternatives into food and thinking you can’t tell the difference! No dumbass, we’re just too polite to say “your food is a bit crap today” so instead say “that was lovely, thanks”

I went over to a friends yesterday and she served chilli con carne. After the meal she gleefully told us that it was quorn and lentil, as if we didn’t think we could taste the difference! At which point all we said was “I thought it tasted a bit unusual”. I really should have said “no wonder it was almost inedible” but I’m way too British for that!

Who would ever think people can't taste the difference between meat (of any kind) and quorn???????

Quertymcquerty · 12/03/2019 22:24

Lol at the horrified responses to eating a dead sentient being to quorn Grin

itsbetterthanabox · 12/03/2019 22:30

Why did assume it was meat? Did she say it would be?
I'd have said oh what kind of chilli is it.
I don't think she 'tricked' you.
Quorn isn't cheaper.

BartonHollow · 12/03/2019 22:35

I'm faced with a dilemma on a nearly weekly basis of having to refuse a hot meal purely because the ingredients bought are always the absolute cheapest and nearly always poor quality, I'm really not a snob, I mean fatty ham, gristly mince, chicken the consistency of a leather sole

I've accepted food to take home and then binned it on several occasions out of politeness, it's waste but there's nothing else I can do as the person virtually forces it on me Sad

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 12/03/2019 22:36

Going by the comments I'm worse than OP. There's no way in hell I'd eat something I hate. I can't believe so many people do...

ivykaty44 · 12/03/2019 22:40

My dp is allergic to quorn, he promptly throws up 🤮

He does though eat many lentils, beans and vegetable meals and isn’t fussed about eating meat

Bringbackthestripes · 12/03/2019 22:52

To be honest, I couldn’t tell it was quorn. I just thought that she had used really cheap mince

But she hadn’t, quorn is more expensive than mince. I get it wasn’t to your taste but she wasn’t trying to ‘trick you with cheaper food’.
YABU.

"GladAllOver

Wait until we have to import food from the USA. Then you'll know what really cheap food is like."

Hmm Everyone I've known that's visited the US has commented on how good the food is.

Blondeshavemorefun · 12/03/2019 23:04

I make a fab quorn spag Bol

Even df couldn’t tell it wasn’t beef mince as usual

He said has it been on cook all day as soft

Missed point of thread 😂😂😂

Tho if I had a friend over , I would know her allergies if any. Assume she would tell me

So wouldn’t be any problem

Amazed how many people on this post have gut problems with quorn

nocoolnamesleft · 12/03/2019 23:06

Allegedly over 4% of people have gut problems with quorn, so hardly that surprising.

ThanksForAllTheFish · 12/03/2019 23:16

I’m actually allergic to Quorn so I would have been able to tell as soon as the itch rash appeared on my face and my throat started to swell up.

That said I am vegetarian and do make a nice lentil chilli. People do like it but I would never pretend it was something other than what it was. I would say I was making a lentil chilli and I find most people (even the meat eaters) are happy to give it a try.

I’ve used soya mince in the past and although you can disguise the flavour as it’s a spicy dish, the texture just isn’t the same - it won’t fool anyone. It is good for boosting the protein content which is why I try to include some soya products in my diet but despite what other vegetarians and vegans say you can tell the difference. Even the best ‘fake’ meats (such as the beyond burger) still haven’t got the meat texture quite right.

LonelyandTiredandLow · 12/03/2019 23:22

Came on here thinking this would be a discussion about cheap and poorly regulated US food imports likely after we leave EU.

As you were.

KnitterOfSocks · 13/03/2019 05:45

We always tell people when accepting an invite about the mushrooms, but I have to say I wouldn't think to specifically include Quorn. Will do from now on though!

PregnantSea · 13/03/2019 05:54

It's weird that people aren't just honest. I used to be vegan so I've eaten my fair share of weird and wonderful foods, and I actually don't mind people using lentils and Quorn instead of meat. However it definitely tastes different. The point of lentil chillie isn't that you can't tell the difference between that and real meat - it's just a different dish because it's made with lentil instead of meat, and it's a meal in it's own right. As long as someone is a good cook it should still taste nice, just different. So no need to try and "trick" people with it. I would find that very annoying.

WhiteDust · 13/03/2019 06:28

Wait until we have to import food from the USA. Then you'll know what really cheap food is like.

I agree.

JenniferJareau · 13/03/2019 07:02

I can imagine the scene with my friends if I took some of the advice on here:

Friend: I'm making chilli con carne, want to come over for dinner
Me: Yes I'd love to thanks, but I have an intolerance to Quorn.
Friend: Confused I'm making chilli con CARNE, not vege chilli. Won't be a piece of Quorn in sight, what are you on about!?!?

clairemcnam · 13/03/2019 07:30

I eat lots of vegan meals, but I don't like quorn, although will eat it if I am given it. I try and make things that most people like when cooking. So in the same way I would not cook liver for guests unless I knew they loved it, I would not cook with quorn.

Used to know someone who would cook cakes made with barely any sugar or fat, to make them healthier. They were pretty horrible, and I didnt see the point. If you want cake, eat cake.

ahtellthee · 13/03/2019 07:46

Was she found Meatless Monday?

Tessabelle74 · 13/03/2019 08:04

How can you be "tricked" into eating anything unless they've sent you a laminated recipe sheet beforehand which they've deviated from? Personally I'd just he happy someone took the time to cook for me and stop being such a bitch but maybe I'm just too British? 🤔

MilkTrayLimeBarrel · 13/03/2019 08:10

Why do people have such a thing about US food? I have never had a bad meal in a Restaurant over there and have also self-catered. The choice of food is much better than ours and from my experience, tastes good too. If you are talking about burgers and cheap take-aways, well that is different but I wouldn't eat that kind of food in this country anyway!

k1233 · 13/03/2019 08:37

I'm a fusspot about food and warn people - it's the texture of food with me so absolutely no beans or lentils.

As far as I know it's common to ask guests if there's something they don't eat. I certainly do that and if cooking for others, stay mainstream. That said, asked a new BF once if there was anything he didn't eat - first time cooking for him, so wanted to make something nice. No he says, pretty much eat everything. Well my dad worked on a farm and would get a lamb every year. He didn't eat lamb, so it would come to me, which was great, but meant I'd get some cuts I wouldn't usually buy like rolled shoulder roast as they are a little tougher. Unfortunately that was all I had left. I have a wonderfully yummy recipe for an apricot yoghurt lamb roast - it's really devine. You need to marinate the meat in a spicy yoghurt mixture, then roast and do a sauce. To get the meat soft I marinated for two nights. Anyway, he arrives as I'm finishing cooking. Oh, is that lamb he asks. With a sinking feeling I say yes, do you like lamb? Sure he says. A bit later, making the sauce, oh is that apricot? Um, yes, yes it is. Anyway he ate dinner and seemed to enjoy it. I found out much later he didn't like roast lamb and also didn't like apricot! I asked him why didn't you tell me - I specifically asked. He never thought someone would combine the two LOL However, there is a silver lining - it became one of his favourite meals, because it is so gosh darn delicious.

SmallFastPenguin · 13/03/2019 08:57

I work in a canteen and the number of people who assume they can guess whether a prepared dish contains an allergen is amazing. Just because something is traditionally made in a certain way doesn't mean someone won't make their own version. You can't just guess what is in something because "it's called Chilli con carne so it must be 100% beef".

clairemcnam · 13/03/2019 09:19

MilkTray The standards for production of food is much lower than here. They can use all kinds of insecticides and processing that is banned here.

IamPickleRick · 13/03/2019 11:28

k1233 Can I have that recipe please! Sound delish!

k1233 · 13/03/2019 12:19
