People tricking you with cheaper food

AIBU to get really annoyed with people substituting cheaper alternatives into food and thinking you can’t tell the difference! No dumbass, we’re just too polite to say “your food is a bit crap today” so instead say “that was lovely, thanks”

I went over to a friends yesterday and she served chilli con carne. After the meal she gleefully told us that it was quorn and lentil, as if we didn’t think we could taste the difference! At which point all we said was “I thought it tasted a bit unusual”. I really should have said “no wonder it was almost inedible” but I’m way too British for that!

All the bold commentors with 20/20 perfect hind sight ugh!. No one that accepts a friend's invitation to a home cooked meal is going to ask for brand ingredient list or disparage the dish openly before even tasting it unless they are and absolute turd and less than a human being. Don't buy the B.S. or feign victimhood because you ate something you didn't like. At this stage of the game people know how their friends cook and what they cook with. Vegans know their few carnivorous friends and how to decline an invitation. BTW, America has very good quality food. Not everything is sourced from McDonald's or KFC. FYI.

That chilli sounds dog shit. I tried quorn once, It is horrendous.

SalemShadow · 13/03/2019 23:17

I much prefer quorn to real mince OP. I have to say I find your post rather rude and bad mannered. It was nice if her to cook for you and you sound very ungrateful and classless.

Sowing747 · 13/03/2019 23:43

@QuestionableMouse erm...overreacting much!

YourSarcasmIsDripping · 14/03/2019 06:44

I think OP's biggest mistake was to make this about cheap food and costs. It either got people's backs up or half the thread is explaining Quorn is as expensive as mince if not more expensive.

It's not really an issue of cost, it's being told after she ate, that she had a completely different meal, with two ingredients that she had no idea she was eating. If she's never had Quorn before she wouldn't know if it made her poorly or not.

I tell my husband we are having shepherd pie/ Spag Bol and it's always 50/50 if I use Quorn or meat beucase it just depends what is going off first! I wouldn't say I'm tricking him I just call the dishes by their names? Same with chilli con carne... Not everyone knows carne means meat (I didn't until this thread). What did you want her to call the meal? On another note I went to a friends who 'hid' vegetables in her lasagne instead of using meat and I loved it becuase I felt so healthy afterwards!

I use quorn sometimes as DD is a vegetarian. I also make green lentil bolognaise and all my meat eaters like it too. I make vegetable/bean chilli and curries Nothing to do wit being cheaper, although it is . We have reduced meat intake this way.

Fungus as in similar to mushrooms?

Closer to mildew, I think.

greenpop21 · 14/03/2019 17:58

There was an episode of Inside the Factory on recently with the ever-smiling Gregg Wallace.. It was in the Quorn factory. Nothing scared me.

MrMeSeeks · 14/03/2019 18:20

Anyone can have an allergic reaction to any food stuff at any time. People eat all manner of artificial foods, don't see why Quorn is being vilified
No allergy, quorn very commonly upsets ibs sufferers, so i wouldn't be happy to not be told i was eating quorn.

greenpop21 · 14/03/2019 18:23

She didn't tell them it was meat, she just served a chilli. I'm surprised the guests didn't comment and ask what the 'meat' was, that's normal dinner conversation isn't it? Also OP doesn't have IBS.
