People tricking you with cheaper food

AIBU to get really annoyed with people substituting cheaper alternatives into food and thinking you can’t tell the difference! No dumbass, we’re just too polite to say “your food is a bit crap today” so instead say “that was lovely, thanks”

I went over to a friends yesterday and she served chilli con carne. After the meal she gleefully told us that it was quorn and lentil, as if we didn’t think we could taste the difference! At which point all we said was “I thought it tasted a bit unusual”. I really should have said “no wonder it was almost inedible” but I’m way too British for that!

Quorn is £6/kg.

20% fat mince is from around £3/kg.

Literally half the price.

Lentils are cheaper, around £1.80/kg, but even it's obviously cheaper to use mince beef.

(Mince beef has more protein than quorn.)

YABU to assume it's cheaper food.

It's shit food, but it's not cheaper, and that's unlikely to be the reason for the susbtitution.

LaBelleSauvage · 12/03/2019 19:08

When I have dinner parties I don't give a run through of my ingredients to my guests, unless I know they have an allergy or a particular food belief.

gamerchick · 12/03/2019 19:09

I'd go nuts if someone gave me Quorn without telling me. That shit gives me really bad bellys.

In fact I would go purge it in her bog and tell her she wasn't cooking for me again.

bordellosboheme · 12/03/2019 19:09

Op are you a friend or a frenemy? You sound like the latter. Perhaps she's vegetarian or trying to reduce meat consumption.

LaBelleSauvage · 12/03/2019 19:09

P.S. YABU

user1474894224 · 12/03/2019 19:10

The cook didn't say she was trying to pretend it was anything other than what it was.

I would have happily eaten it. I like Quorn and lentils. In fact I have just had lentil soup. And on Thursday we will be having turkey mince bolognaise. None of this is cost....just a desire to eat less red meat.

TheHorseYouRodeInOn · 12/03/2019 19:10

My daughter is severely allergic to quorn, luckily we carry an epipen but I still think it's a dangerous thing to do without telling everyone. It's not funny at all 😡

DeaflySilence · 12/03/2019 19:11

"I'd be on her loo, shitting my brains out if she did that to me."

Why, @QuestionableMouse? Are you allergic to lentils, or the ingredients of Quorn? And if you are allergic to particular foods or ingredients, why would you not tell your host before they cooked for you?

MonstranceClock · 12/03/2019 19:14

If someone told me they were making Chili Con Carne, I woudn't think to ask if they weren't using meat, as it literally means chili with meat. I'd expect them to tell me they were using quorn instead.

Jenny17 · 12/03/2019 19:16

I don't think Quorn in cheaper than meat?

What I did hate as a kid was changing brands and claiming we couldn't tell the difference. Preferred to go without the substitutions were not nice.

NutElla5x · 12/03/2019 19:19

Are quorn and lentils really that much cheaper than mince and kidney beans though? And if they are,so what? Maybe your friend is just experimenting with food a bit and thought you'd be an ideal candidate to test her new recipe on. It's not her fault that you hide your set-in-your-ways and rude and unappreciative nature from her so well is it?

starzig · 12/03/2019 19:21

I tried giving it to the OH. He was having none of it. It wasn't cheaper though, I was just trying to reduce our red meat consumption.

LaBelleSauvage · 12/03/2019 19:22

Chilli con carne could be made with a mixture of beef mince and lentils- I do this as it increases the fibre and is healthier. I also sometimes include aubergine etc.

Again. If you, or your daughter, has an allergy. You need to LET PEOPLE KNOW.

If you don't you are an irresponsible parent.

If my child had an allergy, I would be checking the ingredients of their food before they ate it, not just making assumptions about ingredients not being used. Are you for real?

QuestionableMouse · 12/03/2019 19:23

@DeaflySilence it's a reaction to Quorn. I found that out the hard way. Blush My friends know but this sort of person seems to take glee in tricking people into eating things.

LaBelleSauvage · 12/03/2019 19:24

If you booked an appointment at my GP surgery and relayed that you'd made an assumption about home cooked food for your child without informing the host of her allergy I'd be giving you a talking to- not saying oh how unreasonable that the host included lentils in her chilli.

puppy23 · 12/03/2019 19:24

YANBU - I wouldn't want to be served Quorn either!

AnnaComnena · 12/03/2019 19:25

The cook didn't say she was trying to pretend it was anything other than what it was.

But she did pretend! She pretended it was chili con carne, when it wasn't!

If someone tells you they're serving chili con carne, why would you think it necessary to say you can't eat quorn?

LaughableLemur · 12/03/2019 19:25

You don't sound like you would be very pleasant to be around 🙂
you sound like a fucking snob 👍🏻
Quorn mjnce isn't even really cheaper than normal mince so it's not a cheap alternative, maybe she just fancied trying something new. Hopefully she won't bother inviting you next time 🙂

LaBelleSauvage · 12/03/2019 19:25

*quorn not lentils

greenelephantscarf · 12/03/2019 19:26

quorn would have me heating their house with my gas...

I don't mind substitutions usually, veg are good and all that, but I need to know (have a couple of food allergies)

LaBelleSauvage · 12/03/2019 19:27

Con carne means with meat. It doesn't mean 'with meat, and without lentils, quorn, gluten, celery and peanuts'

The ingredients are not mutually exclusive

LaBelleSauvage · 12/03/2019 19:30

AnnaComnena

Of course I would... if I had an allergy to quorn. For the 8millionth time, if you have an allergy, tell your host.

Hillarious · 12/03/2019 19:32

If you want a veggie chilli, don't use Quorn, just use a variety of beans (red kidney beans, butter beans, any other beans and also chick peas), peppers, onions, tomatoes. It's fab and much cheaper than Quorn or beef mince,

I know this misses the point of the thread totally.

gamerchick · 12/03/2019 19:34

Or how about not giving someone fake meat without telling them first? Hmm

Some people are well weird.

nocoolnamesleft · 12/03/2019 19:34

And for the 8millionth time, most of us aren't allergic to quorn, we have a gut intolerance to it.
