Awful food poisoning or stomach bug - feel dire

I was up four times last night with sickness and diarrhea coming out both ends simultaneously. Thank heavens our bathroom floor is tiled, that’s all I’ll say. Today I’ve been in bed all day and have just about managed to drink a glass of water and eat half a slice of dry toast. I feel very weak and for some reason my pelvis area aches - it feels a bit like period pain, but I’m not due my next one until the end of the month.

The sickness and diarrhea have stopped now thankfully, so that’s something. But is there anything I can do to speed up recovery?

I did eat some pate that had been open about five days in the fridge yesterday, but was still within its BB date. I’m thinking that might be the cause, but DP ate it too and is totally fine?

No advice OP sorry, DD1 has the same including pain in pelvic area. she went to hospital at the weekend as wondered about the pelvic pain, blood tests and scans showed she's ok in that department. Been off work 1 week so far, can't eat or even have water without being sick, and is so weak. I came on your thread to see if anyone had advised you! Hope you feel much better soon. I've taken day off am hear with DD she can barely raise her head from pillow, what IS this bug..!

IHeartKingThistle · 11/03/2019 15:17

Poor you.

The pate in my fridge says once opened use within 3 days so maybe it's that?

crisscrosscranky · 11/03/2019 15:19

I have something similar today- not pleasant! I think little sips of water and plain foods are the only way - and sleep (I have a 20 month old climbing over me so I'm not practicing what I preach there) Thanks

donajimena · 11/03/2019 15:20

5 days is too long to be open. It might be worth taking a stool sample if you don't make a quick recovery.

spugzbunny · 11/03/2019 15:22

There's something going round i think. The baby and I had it last week. 12 hours of exorcist style vomiting and then felt rough for a day or so.

Stay off dairy. It's really bad for you when you've been sick a lot. You need your gut flora to regenerate before you can tolerate dairy again. Ideally 2 weeks.

NCagain222 · 11/03/2019 15:25

Thanks for the replies. I’ve just had another (smaller) bout of diarrhea. The pelvic pain is strange - I’m wondering if it’s due to dehydration?

I think it may have been the pate but don’t understand why DP is fine if so?

Mistress I hope your daughter feels better soon Flowers

NCagain222 💐

Can I just say tho be careful re. dehydration. I wasn't around on Saturday, DD went to hospital as her partner insisted. Only to be told she was seriously rehydrated. She was put on a drip.

Get yourself some Rehydration treatment (sachets) at Boots or Superdrug asap

LakieLady · 11/03/2019 15:44

When I had food poisoning, after a couple of days my whole pelvic area felt very tender which I put down to the constant diarrhoea and vomitting.

The tender, sore feeling lasted a week or so iirc.

NCagain222 · 11/03/2019 15:46

Thanks Lakie - good to know it’s “normal”.

I’ve managed to eat a whole banana - feeling slightly better but still dreadful. Gah Sad

Hollowvictory · 11/03/2019 17:55

Ew yes pate is infamous for food poisoning particularly listeria

NCagain222 · 11/03/2019 17:57

Oh no, really Hollow? I don’t know why I stupidly went ahead and ate it. It tasted normal though and DP (normally more prone to these things than I am) is totally fine!

Sometimes people are just more affected than others - hope you feel better soon Thanks

Fiveredbricks · 11/03/2019 18:07

Sounds like a burst ovarian cyst rather than food poisoning. They have very similar symptoms but the pelvic pain would make this scream 'cyst' to me. You need to go get checked out when you can.

And Paté is pasturised in the UK so VERY unlikely to be that

Sparklesocks · 11/03/2019 18:09

I’m not sure there’s much you can do to speed up recovery except ride it out I’m afraid, just get plenty of rest, sleep if you can. Sip water regularly (dont gulp loads down at once though as it might set you off again). A Dioralyte sachet might also help hydrate you.

MillicentSnitch · 11/03/2019 18:10

You can make your own rehydration fluid with water, salt and sugar. Has to be in the correct proportions, Google will find it. Makes a big difference to me, esp if headache-y.

brizzlemint · 11/03/2019 18:25

Rehydration fluid is foul. My GP recommends flat sugary drinks like coke instead.

Fiveredbricks · 11/03/2019 18:29

@brizzlemint your GP might want to read the NHS updated advice about the coke myth.

Best to down the rehydration sachet in a shot and then drink a tumblr of water after.

GiveMeAllTheGin8 · 11/03/2019 21:09

Sounds awful op, dd had food poisoning and it was like nothing I’ve ever seen before
Ended up in hospital as was dehydrated after 12 hours of vomiting
Hope it’s over soon for you Flowers

NCagain222 · 11/03/2019 21:36

Thanks GiveMe. The throwing up and diarrhea seem to have stopped now (hope I’m not speaking too soon!) but I feel incredibly weak. I managed 45 mins in front of the telly with DP and am now back in bed. DP now saying he feels a bit peaky too - hope this isn’t a bug that I’ve given to him!

Get rehydration packs and mix with water. This can be bought at boots or Sainsbury’s. Take sips and don’t drink too much. Make sure you can keep it down first. For example a few sips every 30 minutes and if it’s kept down after a couple hours you can increase the amount. When you eventually do eat have toast (white bread) in small amount to see if it’s kept down. Then bananas and apple sauce or white rice. If you keep those down after a day you can move on to other bland foods. No dairy for a week.

lilabet2 · 11/03/2019 22:20

Sounds awful and definitely like a sickness bug.

Pepsi max/diet coke has phosphoric acid in it, which acts as a mild anti-emetic/anti-sickness agent. Imodium is good for diarrhoea. If you were still puking I'd recommend 'Domperidone', (which you can buy online from some pharmacies after a consultation from an online doctor) to stop you being sick.

The lower abdominal pain is likely to be from lower intestine involvement in the virus.

Try to stay away from work for at least 48 hours after the diarrhoea stops AND away from places like shops where you could spread it to other people. Wash your hands carefully too.

There's a small chance that it's from the pate but much more likely to be a stomach virus.

NCagain222 · 11/03/2019 22:40

Thanks. Looks like DP has now contracted it too, if the sounds coming from the bathroom are anything to go by Sad

givemesteel · 11/03/2019 22:45

The diarrhoea bug has been doing rounds here, I've had it and dc have had it, baby still got it.

I would eat pate 5 days after opening it, I think you can usually tell if food is on the turn and if your dh had it as well I think its less likely to be food poisoning.

Nothing to suggest, only sympathy.
