Is everything offensive these days?

So after the Spoonsing event not log ago, here I am again wanting to know if IABU. This time it’s clorhong.

I was in a (totally different pub chain) pub today having a drink for a family get together. I was wearing a Hobgoblin T-shirt (attached is a pic of it from their website). I wa a washing my hands in the ladies and a woman started having a go about how I was setting a bad example for her daughter by wearing an alcohol t-shirt with a demon on it.

In a Pub.

That sells Hobgoblin.

She seemed offended that I shrugged her off and walked away and followed telling me I shouldn’t be walking round in clothing like that where children could see because I might influence them.
So WIBU to wear a t shirt like that, in a pub that serves the very beer, when I was out with family and friends? Or is everything offensive these days?

“In what universe is a picture of a beer-drinking goblin offensive?”
In no world. Except perhaps the world of a fundamentalist Christian.

And yes, whatever the fuck you want to do in your own home, of course.

Livpool · 11/03/2019 08:09

Surely a fundamental Christian wouldn't be in a pub on a Sunday though...

BertrandRussell · 11/03/2019 08:19

“Surely a fundamental Christian wouldn't be in a pub on a Sunday though...“
Exactly.

QuirkyQuark · 11/03/2019 08:40

If she wants to be offended by Whychwood products then she can go and stand in town when it's being brewed. The smell is revolting but the finished products are lovely.

ViolaD77 · 11/03/2019 08:43

Tell her to mind her business and fuck off

BertrandRussell · 11/03/2019 09:11

“Tell her to mind her business and fuck off“
Yep.

Well we have several threads whitesplaining language to black people, repeat threads on the awfulness of Meghan Markle (not of course that its her race you understand, nonono) and regularly threads excusing men for being biologically unable to do the washing up (the poor dears!) and just about everything else. Some days this place is more like the DM comments section.

But yes, I'm sure the constraints on free speech are destroying society as we know it Hmm

SpenglerOswald · 11/03/2019 11:31

But yes, I'm sure the constraints on free speech are destroying society as we know it they are actually, the systematic destruction of free thought, despite being cheered on by most mumsnetters, means that women can’t discuss their very justified concerns about the transgender issue and the proposed GRA legislation, but yeah, thought policing is great apparently.

C8H10N4O2 · 11/03/2019 16:23

@SpenglerOswald

So to clarify - your position is that casual racist language and all the other "ists" must be accepted or we can't discuss biology and sex based discrimination?

I disagree. I've never found basic consideration of groups widely discriminated against (some of which I'm a member of) a blocker for discussing sex based discrimination and the attempts to change sex based equalities to identity based equalities. I can't see how you would unless you think its possible to eg identify as black or disabled

Slowknitter · 11/03/2019 16:30

Some people just act offended as a way of virtue signalling. If you're offended by something, unless it's actually illegal, mostly just ignore, avoid and move on. Anyway, people have no divine right to never come across anything that offends them. Ugh, I'm offended by my own double negative.

FunkyKingston · 11/03/2019 17:13

Yabu but only because Hobgoblin tastes like shite and their advertising is wearisome in the extreme.

AleFailTrail · 12/03/2019 00:44

@FunkyKingston it’s not my favourite but it’s alright and was certainly the best thing on the bar. No guest ales and all lagers/chembrew/Guinness makes AleFail an unhappy woman.
I have a few different beer firm t shirts because I like the artwork not the beer.

Hate Guinness, they’ve changed the recipe somehow so now the draught stuff is foul. Don’t mind the bottled ones (the export stout range). Never had murphys but I prefer...well, I have a list of about 150 stouts and porters I’ve tried in the last 4 years and liked

Ignore and carry on.

You're right, we seem to be in an era of the mortally offended.

This week we've had two complaints in our department at work. One because we shared in the company newsletter about an LGBT event that my organisation is involved in supporting. The complainant said we were "promoting immoral sexual sin". 🙄

Then we shared a professional video we got made of our CEO talking about some of the big things on the horizon for the organisation, and someone wrote a very angry email, "disgusted that the CEO doesn't see fit to wear a tie in the video and how in fact, it seems to be a common theme amongst the Senior Leadership Team!"

The CEO had a suit on, looked smart. Not sure what a two feet strip of silk matters. Also, the company doesn't have a dress code anyway and mosr people wear jeans and trainers.

People just love complaining. Your tee is fine.

LakieLady · 12/03/2019 10:33

A friend of mine has the perfect response for situations like this. She's quite posh and very well-spoken, and always apologises profusely for any offence she might have given, while announcing regretfully that she had no idea that (whatever) could be seen in such a way as to give offence. Then she says that actually, she still can't see it so "... why don't you just jolly well fuck off". She occasionally adds "... and stop being such a cunt" just for good measure.

She delivers all this in a tone of such reasonableness that there is a measurable delay before people realise that they have been sworn at quite emphatically.

The last time I heard her do this, someone had complained about badge she was wearing that had a Guy Fawkes mask on it with the words "V for Vagina".

She's quite mad, imo, but great fun.

VladmirsPoutine · 12/03/2019 10:47

I'm surprised this happened. It seems such an enormous waste of time for all involved.

totallywired · 12/03/2019 14:12

I don't think people being offended over silly stuff is a new thing. I bet if op got in a time machine and wandered around through history she find people offended by her t-shirt because it's upset their religious sensibilities, they're prohibitionists, they don't think it's suitably lady like etc.

AleFailTrail · 12/03/2019 14:24

But then I wouldn’t be stupid enough to wear it back even 50 years ago ;) There’s a time and a place and I thought a pub was a good place for a beer joke
