To ask about tampons

Sorry if this is a bit personal. I’m going somewhere in a few weeks that’s going to be orientated around swimming and water. I’m likely to be on my period and I’m so pissed off.

I’ve never used a tampon before. I’m quite squeamish/prudish or whatever the word is regarding anything to do with such things. I’m 32 if that’s relevant. I’m considering trying tampons so I can wear a swimsuit and swim. Will I struggle first time. The thought of it makes me sick but needs must.

Essentially, I just want to know are they easy to use? I’m guessing yes as thousands of women do. I think I have a vague memory of trying once and not being able to do it and freaking out.

Humm.
Applicators are easy to put in, you've had kids, a tampon should be a breeze.
Can't you get medication from your doctor to delay your period?

GregoryPeckingDuck · 08/03/2019 20:42

You’ll be fine. What exactly is it that makes you uncomfortable? I would suggest trying a few different types before going to see what works best. I can’t stand the applicator ones but perfectly happy with normal tampons for example.

SirVixofVixHall · 08/03/2019 20:42

You can get period pants that are also ok to swim in I think ? I am hoping I haven’t imagined that ! Will go and see what I can find. I also hate tampons. I hate the feeling when they go in, but the worst thing is pulling them out...uggghhh. So you may never get on with them, but can almost certainly learn to tolerate them for one holiday.

tessiegirl · 08/03/2019 20:43

Amazed at some of the totally wrong advice people give!
Tampons are absolutely fine for swimming.
Easy to insert. I always use the applicator ones as they go up high enough themselves without your fingers needing to go inside.
Easier than a mooncup I would say as string makes them easy to pull out. With a mooncup I found there is always a bit of suction as you need to break the seal up there. Hope that makes sense. Grin

Oh and I'd recommend Tampax compact!!

MolyHolyGuacamole · 08/03/2019 20:45

Just make sure you are comfortable, and you'll get it in easily. I find applicators much easier to use as they get them in far enough so that you don't feel them. Depending on your flow you can get away with using regular (yellow) or light (purple). I tried when I was younger and didn't like them, but came back to them in my 30s and they are a godsend.

Pull them out with TP and wrap them up straight away, should help with the 'squeamishness' if that's what your squeamish about.

Noloudnoises · 08/03/2019 20:46

That's EXACTLY what the doctor would prescribe them for! Anyway they come in a packet of 90 so you could just delay the one in may too.

Other than that, just, y'know, use tampons

Ozziewozzie · 08/03/2019 20:48

Use Vaseline whilst you're practising when not on your period do you get used to it going in and sitting in the right place. If you don't pop it in high enough it can feel really obvious and uncomfortable. I literally just pop it all the way up. It can't go anywhere. The Vaseline will just help you avoid getting dirt of dry or irritated.
Perfect for swimming.
( although whilst getting ready for swimming in a unisex family changing room, my son asked me loudly 'mummy, what's that blue string hanging out your fanny for?)
So embarrassing!!

JRMisOdious · 08/03/2019 20:48

They’ve very easy to use.
Do make sure though, if you’re not used to using them, that you don’t forget it’s there (they’re comfortable, you might). Remove it quite quickly after you’ve been swimming. It’s extremely rare but a forgotten tampon can cause toxic shock syndrome.
Sorry, don’t want to scare you 😊 millions of women happily use them. Just don’t forget it’s in.

anniehm · 08/03/2019 20:49

They are fine for swimming but you need to replace after you get out of the pool. I would suggest you practice as they are easy to use but like everything you have to learn. I prefer no applicator ones (supermarket own brand is fine).

twinnywinny14 · 08/03/2019 20:49

I have used tampons since I was 14and have never used pads/towels since then. I swim regularly and bath with one in without any problems at all. I can’t however use the applicators ones, just doesn’t work do me so non-applicator ones for me, just insert and done the when you remove drop straight in the toilet and flush, muchless sqeamish than towels or similar x

RoseDog · 08/03/2019 20:49

That is exactly what the Dr prescribes them for, you can order them from boots and superdrug onlince for about £20!

I'm in my 30's with 2 kids and don't like using tampons either!

nbee84 · 08/03/2019 20:49

Google modibodi. They do period swimwear.

SirVixofVixHall · 08/03/2019 20:50

Hmm a quick google suggests that no, you can’t use special swim pants, so tampons are the only option. Unless you will be in a wetsuit of course .

DailyMailFail101 · 08/03/2019 20:52

Why nothing try a period delay tablet from Loyds pharmacy, think they are available online, no doctors appointment needed.

Auramigraine · 08/03/2019 20:52

@Ozziewozzie 😂😂😂

ShortandSweet96 · 08/03/2019 20:54

I used to wear tampons, then learned I absolutely hate the things. I also hate periods and everything that comes with them. I tend to use pads but will use tampons for swimming when I need to.

They are easy to insert, you cant really gonto far so dont be afraid to get right up in to ensure it's in the right place and you wont feel it.

Also on a side note: make sure you put the string between your bum cheeks so it doesnt flop out of your swimwear for everyone to see. Speaking from personal experience..

Notcontent · 08/03/2019 20:55

There are so many myths that get spread around about periods and tamped... just to be clear:

  • tampons are fine for swimming;
  • do not listen to anyone who tells you you can go swimming without a tampon.

Oh, and some people find the applicator tampons easier to use - the plastic ones in particular (even though not environmentally friendly).

dietcokemegafan · 08/03/2019 20:56

Tampons are easy to put in but I would never go swimming wearing one. It would just absorb all the water and be useless

how do you swim during your period @thefirst48 ? Tampons are fine OP, just change it after you get out of the pool

Skisunsnow · 08/03/2019 20:57

I was at my local pharmacy earlier and there was a poster advertising the northisterone, no requirement for a prescription.

ShortandSweet96 · 08/03/2019 21:00

Also reccomend Tampax pearl if you're a first time user or not particularly keen(who is?!) The applicator for these is really easy to use and are really smooth so you shouldn't feel too squeamish.

Namechangedbecauseiwantto · 08/03/2019 21:03

Would not recommend tampax, I find they cause me pain, try a cotton tampon instead, like Natracare. Just the same but not full of crap. I genuinely used to hurt with tampax.

Bearbehind · 08/03/2019 21:03

It would just absorb all the water and be useless.

Eh?

You’re really not inserting them correctly if they are absorbing water.

muchprefersummer · 08/03/2019 21:05

I personally find non applicator tampons much better than applicator tampons so try both to see if you have a preference. Swimming is fine with them in, just make sure the string is fully hidden before when putting on your swim suit! My DH calls this 'mouse watch!!'
