AIBU to think DD is having me on??

DD always used to eat potatoes in any form then she went off mash last year but would still eat roast/chips/smiles/homemade wedges.

Then she would only eat chips/smiles/homemade wedges and roast potatoes if they were chip shaped.

Now she's decided she likes chips (chippy or oven) and smiles.

Is she having me on? Surely chips are the same as roast potatoes really?

Not sure whether to just keep putting them on her plate and her not eat them or give in and give her an alternative!

TroysMammy I’m the same .
Love potatoes but boiled potatoes are foul!

It's not too faffy to prepare different meals.

E.g. If it's pasta night then I just serve 3 different sauces (one from a jar so easier) or if it's a roast dinner then I do a mixture of veg. We like curry but the kids aren't keen so we have curry and they have fajitas or something they do like.

I'm used to making various meals having been in various ways if eating over the years!

I thought it was just me! I hated potatoes as a kid. I was probably the world’s least fussy eater but I just couldn’t stand potatoes in any form except chips and crisps. People would find it odd because potatoes are so bland, but I think that was why. I was really adventurous as a kid and loved trying new flavours and i think potatoes (especially boiled ones) just tasted like horrible steaming hot balls of nothing! Plus I hated the texture of potato skins.

Nowadays I have branched out and will eat mash, roasties (in small quantites) and sliced potatoes but I still hate boiled ones (seriously what is the point), jacket potatoes and will barely tolerate wedges. And don’t get me started on those filled potato skin things.

I do wish I liked jacket potatoes because they’re so handy. Sometimes they’re the only decent option in my work canteen and it’s so annoying that I can’t stomach them!

Why would you serve someone something you know they don’t like? Would you apply the same to an adult?

You wouldn't but OP's dd did like all of them and had happily eaten them. I doubt it's a 'not like' more of a *prefer the other kinds'
I would do the same with an adult in the family if I was cooking a meal for everyone and they decided they didn't like something they had previously eaten and liked. They can choose not to eat it but I wouldn't be cooking an alternative.

Why would you serve someone something you know they didnt like?

-Because they liked it on Tuesday.
-Because they eat it at gran's house/nursery.

  • Because it's good for them.
-Because if they try it enough times they'll learn to tolerate it. -Because you dont want them living on yogurt, crisps and chocolate buttons.
  • Because you dont want to serve processed shit just so everyone can have what they want.
-Because you are cooking for 4 people and are not a restaurant.

So many good reasons.

Yes she's having you on op, I would probably only eat chips and smilies given the choice (if they weren't so nutritionally poor and calorific),as would my kids.Keep on putting other variations of potatoes on her plate alongside the protein and plenty of veg and if she eats it great and if she doesn't well it's better than her eating chips every day isn't it?

I don't pander to my kids if they start saying they don't like stuff for all the good reasons given by @ barbarianmum but also because when I met my DH he was such a fussy eater and his Mum would cook up wonderful meals and serve everyone something different and I decided then and there that wasn't what I was going to do.
