Prednisolone- steroids?

Has anyone used this before?

I've been prescribed it for swelling of the tonsils and a bit apprehensive to take it.

I also have to take 10mg 2x daily but have noted that one of the common side effects is insomnia and in this case, I'll be taking it close to bedtime?

Should I just stop freaking out?

I would take it in the morning if you can.

I have never had them but ds has had many courses. They make him hyperactive but also help massively

Fairylea · 06/03/2019 07:44

If you’ve been prescribed them you must need them, take them. They can make you a bit hyper if you take them too late in the day but the benefits outweigh that.

I take steroids every day, all the time for Addison’s disease. Without them I’d be dead! They’re brilliant when used correctly.

Fairylea · 06/03/2019 07:45

Just wanted to add that is a fairly low dose - for asthma attacks or Addison’s flare ups the dose is more like 40-60mg a day so at your dose you might not notice any side effects anyway.

ElfridaEtAl · 06/03/2019 07:45

My mum's had them often for her chest, she's usually been fine aside from her blood sugars. If you're diabetic they can make it difficult to get your blood sugars down.

Singlenotsingle · 06/03/2019 07:46

I take mine in the morning after breakfast. They're magic!

Bluesmartiesarebest · 06/03/2019 07:53

I took prednisolone for a few years due to severe arthritis and found it to be a big help in treating my condition. The drug has been around for many years, is effective when used correctly and works well.

It sounds like it’s a short term treatment for you so don’t be scared to take the medication when you need it. Good luck and hope you feel better soon.

Lauren83 · 06/03/2019 07:55

I took them for 16 weeks when I was pregnant, I struggled sleeping until I got used to them (better to take early IMO) and when I came off them I had headaches for a week or so but apart from that they were fine

erja · 06/03/2019 07:56

Yeah I definitely seem a bit dramatic now after reading replies - I've been put on them for 3 days!!!! Blush

You might get a little hungry. As.soon as you're off them again that feeling will go away.

My ds was on them for weeks when he was six. They totally sorted his problem out and he's been symptom free for years.

PinkGlitter123 · 06/03/2019 12:36

Was on them a while, noticed some foot cramps when I started reducing them and did get some insomnia but they did the trick for me. Not nice to take but necessary at times.

ColeHawlins · 06/03/2019 12:44

They're corticosteroids. Completely different from anabolic steroids. As possible have said, they're standard treatment for many conditions.

SrSteveOskowski · 06/03/2019 13:15

I've had to take them a couple of times for a bad chest infection that wouldn't shift. Generally for about a week. I don't recall any side effects, so you should be fine for 3 days.

Kolo · 06/03/2019 13:23

My son has it when he has an asthma attack. I’m supposed to try to keep him quiet and calm but he’s off the wall when he has them! No other side effects, though, and it’s worn off after a few hours of taking them.

agnurse · 06/03/2019 13:26

Standard treatment for some types of inflammation. Usually in hospital when we have patients on steroids twice a day, we give them at breakfast and then at 2 p.m. This avoids the insomnia issue.

CloserIAm2Fine · 06/03/2019 13:28

My stepmum fondly remembers when she was on steroids long term, she says she’s never got so much done in her life! Grin

I would take them earlier in the day if at all possible. However when I had some short term steroids a few years ago although I didn’t sleep very well, I wasn’t tired as a result, if that’s any comfort! I had some last year and I think because I was generally very run down at the time I slept fine on them.

cyclecamper · 06/03/2019 13:32

My husband sometimes takes it for his asthma. He warns me when he's starting it because it makes him really irritable. He says it makes everyone else unreasonable.

Luckingfovely · 06/03/2019 13:36

I can't sleep on them at all. But it's only three days and you obviously need them, so take them!

AyoadesChinDimple · 06/03/2019 13:38

Really nothing to freak out about. For some of the health conditions I have they can have an amazing effect. But yes they can cause insomnia and a bit of a raging appetite and maybe too some irritability. But all those things pass once you have finished the course.

Buddytheelf85 · 06/03/2019 13:38

My DH takes then when his colitis flares up. As others have said, they make him really hyper if he takes them later on in the day - he’ll be up all night. They are very effective at controlling the worst of the symptoms.

Hearthside · 06/03/2019 20:43

Yes i have had them twice now when my asthma flares up .Last time i was on a two week course of them .Did make me really hungry but i rather that than the horrendous wheezing and tight chest .

singwhenyoureswimming · 06/03/2019 20:51

@Fairylea

My mum has Addison’s disease. She takes hydrocortisone...do you take prednisolone?

Fairylea · 06/03/2019 23:06

I take hydrocortisone but I also have asthma so take pred for that, I often actually take both together- my usual daily hydrocortisone and an asthma reducing dose of pred. Many people with Addison’s take pred instead of hydrocortisone- it metabolises slightly differently and many people prefer it.

Geekster1963 · 06/03/2019 23:37

I'm currently on them and they do give me insomnia even though I take them in the morning and they make me a bit hyper. Make sure you take them after food so they don't upset your stomach. The list of side effects is scary but generally they are fine.

Maladicta · 06/03/2019 23:44

Currently bouncing around the house after my first 40mg prednisolone dose for asthma, got a week of this to go. If it can knock this attack on the head, I really don't mind.

Remember when ds3 was very little and had regular high doses of it for his asthma, they'd try to get him to calm down in hospital (at 3am...) to very little avail.

singwhenyoureswimming · 07/03/2019 23:02

@Fairylea

That’s really interesting thank you. I’ll let her know. She’s on hydrocortisone and fludrocortisone
