Flour mites

Sorry, probably doesn't belong here!

Pancake day has allowed me to find flour mites in my cupboards.. I never knew these things existed.

What are they and how on earth did they get in my cupboards 😭. I don't know what they are... I'm probably just a but naive

All gone now but I'm absolutely gutted as I'd noticed a blackish bit in my baby's formula tub a few weeks ago and once in the bottle as she was feeding - I thought it might have been something come off my sleeve! But now I've seen them I'm convinced they were what I saw in her milk.. I'll never know!

Sorry, just wanted a rant and some reassurance if a couple had found their way in to DD's milk she won't have been harmed by contamination.

Sounds silly but I absolutely balled my eyes out at the thought of it!

We almost invariably had them in flour when we lived in the Middle East.

I would automatically put each new bag of flour in the freezer, to kill them, and then sieve the dead little buggers out.
They apparently pose absolutely no danger to health - they're not 'dirty'.

They were often in cereal, too, so that Weetabix was known to expats as Weevilbrix.

Sieving flour reveals the eggs.

I infected my cupboards from a bag of arborio rice bought from a fancy deli. I didn't notice them for a while, and when I did I found they were in virtually all the dried goods. I then looked at the lovely chocolate cake that was on the counter beneath the cupboards under a plastic dome. Yes, that was crawling as well, and we had been eating it! Aargh.

Yup I found an old bag of unopened flour yesterday at the back of a shelf. Crawling with them Envy not envy.

We've had flour mites on and off over the years (I wonder if those are just small weevils though - 1-2mm) and have also had the larger ones (3-4mm) that are visible in the cake mix after stirring them in. 🤮 And once we had ones in rice. Those floated. 🤮🤮🤮

Quick blast with a flamethrower did the trick each time! 😁
