Flour mites

Sorry, probably doesn't belong here!

Pancake day has allowed me to find flour mites in my cupboards.. I never knew these things existed.

What are they and how on earth did they get in my cupboards 😭. I don't know what they are... I'm probably just a but naive

All gone now but I'm absolutely gutted as I'd noticed a blackish bit in my baby's formula tub a few weeks ago and once in the bottle as she was feeding - I thought it might have been something come off my sleeve! But now I've seen them I'm convinced they were what I saw in her milk.. I'll never know!

Sorry, just wanted a rant and some reassurance if a couple had found their way in to DD's milk she won't have been harmed by contamination.

Sounds silly but I absolutely balled my eyes out at the thought of it!

Yep, agree, if the tub was far from the cupboards then probably not affected.

We had them twice (Blush) and the second time I bagged everything from each cupboard in a separate bag to isolate the culprits

IamPickleRick · 05/03/2019 23:38

They can fly???? You just turned this in to a horror story! Thanks for the nightmares 😂

M4J4 · 05/03/2019 23:40

WARNING: picture of biscuit weevil in next post! Read at your peril!

UrsulaPandress · 05/03/2019 23:41

I thought the eggs are already in the flour. Hence freezing kills them. I keep everything in strong Tupperware now.

M4J4 · 05/03/2019 23:42

@user147

Yes sadly they can, they flew everywhere, onto the kitchen doors, windows and walls! We used to catch them in bits of tissue and squeeze then until they were dead! Here was our culprit.

Honestly @M4J4 they’re the one thing I’m not embarrassed about. It happens. It can happen to everyone! Ignore Rachel.

If they like a warmth, my steam steriliser is below my food cupboard 🙄

Yes, Ursula, I read the same so now always freeze them. Haven't had them again.

We also had ladybirds, ants and mice (I promise we're clean people!) but the weevils were the worst, just never ending.

MumOfOne92 · 05/03/2019 23:46

@M4J4 that picture needs a trigger warning 😷

I’m not even sure it’s warmth. My old kitchen was very cold (had to prove bread in my bedroom!) and still had them. I feel it’s a very Que Sera, Sera situation, annoyingly.

MumOfOne92 · 05/03/2019 23:47

@M4J4 scratch that just seen your warning!

Thanks User! My mum was disgusted and didn't eat at mine for weeks after it was sorted 😂

MumOfOne92 · 05/03/2019 23:49

@user1473878824 what's worse is I was so upset and panicky my mum had to the cleaning 😭

I do find less likely to have them in cupboards at a lower level, under level of cooker, kettle etc. Plus keep flour and similar in packets but in old biscuit/cake tins.

Foslady · 05/03/2019 23:51

I used to work in a flour mill. The advice was to wag your cupboards out and then get the hairdryer out and dry the cupboards that way, the heated air drys them out and kills them, detox won’t.

Foslady · 05/03/2019 23:51

Wash not wag!!!!

MumOfOne92 · 05/03/2019 23:52

Thankfully it seemed pretty contained to my food cupboard but there were a cpuple of dead ones on my work top. I have dark work tops so couldn't see them 😷

MsPav

Amazon has great pest-proof Tupperware, it seems to be a thing in the US.

I was too tight to buy them, sticking to my empty passata jars!

user1473878824 · 05/03/2019 23:53

@MumOfOne92 if you didn’t want children don’t expect to be doing this shit into their forties is my take on anytime I need this stuff done!!!!

Areyouongluedear · 05/03/2019 23:57

@MumOfOne92 that’s my take whenever I make my mum do any stuff like this for me!!

DontCallMeShitley · 06/03/2019 18:09

Just a note, don't confuse grain weevils with flour weevils, grain weevils are found in birdseed and often dried pet food, they fly and look a bit like little flies.

Flour weevils are like very tiny specks of something dark.

LuckyAmy1986 · 06/03/2019 18:18

How easy are these to see?? Because I always look in my flour and have never seen anything and am a bit grossed out now lol - would they be easy to spot or easy to miss?
