To ask if a tooth root can be removed without anaesthetic?

My daughter's boyfriend messaged her to say he couldn't make it to see her as he had been in pain all weekend and was having a tooth root removed. He said it was painful, but he chose not to have local anaesthetic. Also said he had to pay for the treatment but he doesn't have a job.

Is this likely? She believes him of course but I don't think this can be true?

@SalliSunbeem the OP made it my business when posting the question on an Internet forum!! She seems overly invested in her DDs boyfriend tbh.

I've recently had a tooth root removed. The procedure and recovery is identical to having the whole tooth removed. I, of course, had local anaesthetic as would any sane person

WhatHaveIFound · 05/03/2019 13:37

My DD had root canal treatment with no anaesthetic as the dental hospital were concerned that any injections would spread the infection around her body. Having said that the root of her tooth had died (dental trauma) so there was very little pain in the tooth, just the treatment.

InsomniaTho · 05/03/2019 14:22

I was due to have an impacted wisdom tooth extracted under inhalation sedation but ended up being 13 weeks pregnant and so my (private) dentist wouldn’t do it but offered me local instead as it was much safer. I should add I have extreme dental phobia after a traumatic incident as a child, and would usually require Diazepam to even sit in a waiting room, I still have no idea how I sat through it on just a local.

I’d miscarried 6 months before so The Fear was massive but I’d already had 3 months months worth of various antibiotics Sad

iolaus · 05/03/2019 14:29

I had a root canal once which was horrendous pain - but I also had one once where the root had died and the dentist offered to do it without anaethetic (I said no and he gave the injection but started them straight away - normally they wait - he was right and I didnt feel a thing, whereas a 'normal' root removal even with the injection still hurt

iolaus · 05/03/2019 14:32

Dentist wouldn't be free if he's on contributions based JSA (do they still have that or is it all Universal Credit now?)

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 05/03/2019 14:45

As others have said ive had root canals without anaesthetic

Certainly haven't had an extraction

Nickersnackersnockers · 05/03/2019 14:48

I'll have to give him the benefit of the doubt obvs as it's not a unanimous verdict is it. Although I am erring on it being bollocks.

Thanks to all, especially chuttypicks, bless you my child. And why else would a mother want to try and find out if her daughter's boyfriend is screwing someone else? (Yes, already suspicious). So I can chop his cock off of course. Silly.

Thanks

My child dd broke her front tooth and it died. She then had to have a root canal done and this was done with no anaesthetic (due to the tooth being dead). I did question this and they told me it would be fine / painless...and it was!

LadyB49 · 05/03/2019 14:59

Ok is interested in whether or dd's boyfriend is lying to dd. Not necessarily just nosying on his rental treatment.

LadyB49 · 05/03/2019 15:00

Oops.... Dental treatment

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 05/03/2019 15:03

Should have said that the root canals were fucking painful Grin

steff13 · 05/03/2019 15:10

I've had several root canals. I'm sure you can do them without local anesthetic, but I don't think it would be advisable.

AlphaSigma · 05/03/2019 15:10

I had a small root removed last week. I had anesthetic.

CecilyP · 05/03/2019 15:16

Just to clarify, he said it wasn't the tooth he had removed, just the root. Does that make any difference, would that pain be bearable?

I would have thought that would make it worse as would be nothing for the dentist to get the pliers round to get purchase to do the extraction.

SalliSunbeem · 05/03/2019 15:21

Root canal extraction makes the tooth weaker, they often break afterwards.

But you can still grip and pull a tooth out after root canal treatment.

OftenHangry · 05/03/2019 15:31

Oh hell no. I had root canal done and I felt it even with that local anesthetic.
Can't imagine having it without. If he indeed had it without than he's git some balls on him and would be in pain.
I was in pain for a day or two after the anesthetic worn out too.

hellsbellsmelons · 05/03/2019 15:31

Ask to see the hole later.
If he's had a whole root removed there will be a hole for a little while.
If there is no hole then he is totally lying.
Of course he could have it done without anesthetic but it would be bloody awful and it's highly unlikely!

Why doesn't he have a job?

ShesABelter · 05/03/2019 15:32

My tooth was removed without anaesthetic the dentist pulled it in the surgery because I was pregnant he never wanted to give me a jag.

Rufusthebewilderedreindeer · 05/03/2019 15:44

hells

If its a root canal there wont be a hole

If its a tooth extraction there will be

I am getting confused with what he has supposed to have had done ...

Rezie · 05/03/2019 16:02

Does it really matter if he is telling the truth?

Root canal I'd have local anestetic, but it's possible to do without. My dentist offers both options. That injection is fricking expensive so I understand forgoing it but I want all drugs when at the dentist!

hellsbellsmelons · 05/03/2019 16:38

That's true - it does say tooth root removed, which may suggest a RCT.
Which would not leave a hole but would need a big old filling.

Tighnabruaich · 05/03/2019 16:47

I'm very nervous of dental treatments. But I had an abscess under the gum line of a front bottom tooth. Whole face swelled. Dentist said he would do a root canal and I didn't need anaesthetic because the tooth was dead. I believed him. While it felt like someone doing a DynoRod rummage, there really wasn't what I'd call pain.
Another time I needed a filling removed and a new one put in on a back molar. The lovely Swedish female dentist said, look, if I give you anaesthetic jabs your face will be frozen for ages, if you trust me I'll do it without. I trusted her, and though I had to stop the process a couple of times, she drilled out the old filling, removed the decay and put in the new filling, and I was fine. I amaze myself sometimes ...

Dowser · 05/03/2019 17:18

I have to be numbed from head to foot just for a prep for afillung
I had 6 injections for a temp crown to be removed.
No way...would anyone attempt that on me without something to numb it

Dowser · 05/03/2019 17:20

Wow tigh..it takes 5-6 hours for my face to unfreeze
And a week for the pain/ internal bruising of the injection site to calm down
