If I name my baby a similar name to my friends teen?

kam99 · 04/03/2019 15:48

Been looking at lists of baby names forever and had been fairly set on names beginning with c for some reason (mainly to go with the surname)

about a month ago I asked my partner to look at a list online as I had ended up fed up of him knocking back my suggestions and within about 20 seconds he said Casi! I like that. He had previously said Chloe but I said although I like that name I wanted something less popular.

As soon as he said Casi I was like how have I not seen that as I love it. Started looking at all the different spellings Cassie, Cassia (different name I know) etc. Still not sure which I prefer but I am 100% settled with this name.

Then I remembered my friends teens name is Kaycie and my anxiety kicked in thinking oh what if she thinks this is basically the same name and I am copying.

What do you think? Am I just over thinking?

No Cassidy is gimmicky - it’s not a proper name is it?

Cassie is nice and fine for an adult name. Cassandra just makes me think of only fools and horses!

GreenHouseKeeping · 05/03/2019 12:13

Nobody in their 20s (even30s?) or younger would have any idea what Only Fools and Horses was though.

MikeUniformMike · 05/03/2019 12:14

I was going to suggest Cassidy. I wouldn't normally suggest a surname as a first name but I think it looks ok.
I'm not keen on Cassandra. I'm not sure why.
Cassiopeia might be an option.
Or you could have Catherine on the bc but call her Cassie.

GreenHouseKeeping · 05/03/2019 12:16

To be fair though, Cassandra doesn't have the greatest origins, that might put me off now I think about it...

(I believe she was granted the gift of prophecy but the curse of never being believed...)

BabloHoney · 05/03/2019 12:23

Cassie is a great name and totally different to Kaycie.
Though to be honest, I can't see why you couldn't give her the same name as your friends teenager if you wanted to, people don't own names.
Congrats on your baby x

Cassiopeia is lovely.

^^ sounds like a disease.

Alsohuman · 05/03/2019 12:33

It sounds like what it is - a galaxy.

kam99 · 05/03/2019 12:36

Thanks everyone.

Just seen this name as well as a "full name" version:

Casiana - Not sure about this though.

I am unsure if I will just go with Cassie on the BC. If she decides she needs a more "professional" name when older there is nothing stopping her choosing to go by Cassandra whether or not it is on her BC or not.

I just like Cassie. We have a fair few months to decide still though.

Cassandra birth certificate
Cassie her used name.

BlueMerchant · 05/03/2019 12:37

Casiana reminds me of some type of ballroom dance or something. I don't like it.

CouldntThink · 05/03/2019 12:38

It’s totally different, it’s fine. How about Callie? I think that’s nice too.

kam99 · 05/03/2019 12:41

I actually love that name but someone else I know just named her baby Cali.

I prefer Cassie still though.

I would have loved to use Cassandra nn Cassie for my DD but it didnt go with stupid surname.

DifferentDrum · 05/03/2019 13:50

The two names are definitely different.
I love the name Cassie, much nicer than Kaycie, and it is completely fine for a child or adult IMO.
Poor kid would spend half her life patiently spelling out her name for people if she was called Cassiopeia.

PreseaCombatir · 05/03/2019 13:55

Cassie is fine for a birth certificate.
I have a ‘full name’versuon on my birth certificate, and I don’t really associate it it with being ‘my’ name, as I was never once called it. It’s only doctors that call me it, teachers always used short version, my work emails have always been short version, my CV is short version.
Absolutely fine for it to just be Cassie.
I do like Cassidy too though.
Also all names were made up at one point, never understood that argument!

PreseaCombatir · 05/03/2019 13:57

Also never understood the need for your name to have ‘options’.
Surely a Cassie on her birth certificate could still go by Cassandra or whatever if she wanted to

ImMeantToBeWorking · 05/03/2019 13:58

Pretty sure this story was used by an Irish media outlet yesterday! Hmm

Blueblueyellow · 05/03/2019 13:58

Cassie is lovely! And it's a fine as an adult name. Also when Cassie is an adult she's gonna be working with lots of stranger or faddy names!

Idonotlikeyoudonaldtrump · 05/03/2019 13:59

Just go with Cassie.
It caused confusion for me to have one name on my birth certificate and be known by another.

ilovemylurcher · 05/03/2019 14:04

Go with Cassandra, but call her Cassie- the school will too.
I speak as someone who has the shortened form of a name on my birth certificate (I think it was a thing in the 70's) and I loathe it.
Cassidy is gimmicky and a bit naff IMO.

kam99 · 05/03/2019 14:09

Pretty sure this story was used by an Irish media outlet yesterday!

Really?! Where was this?

Cassie is lovely! And it's a fine as an adult name. Also when Cassie is an adult she's gonna be working with lots of stranger or faddy names!

I think this too. Name trends end up becoming normal with time do they not?

I am liking these replies as I agree Cassie on the BC would be fine.

Cassidy sounds like a surname - Cassandra is lovely and classic. (Although people will assume she's a worrier)

BTW - if you prefer Callie, then use that - I was one of 4 girls with my name in my class at primary school. It doesn't really matter.

ilovemylurcher · 05/03/2019 14:15

But kam, if you name was say Catherine on the birth certificate you could be called Kate, Katie, Cath, Cathy etc. etc.- you have options.
Giving a shortened name doesn't give any options and also, in my experience leads to people looking at you a bit oddly when you are asked to give your name in any formal situation etc.- as if you don't understand that they have asked you for your full name , and even questioning whether you mean the long version of your name.
You then end up explaining that it is in fact your 'actual' name and it is a bit embarrassing all round tbh.

PrismGuile · 05/03/2019 14:24

Kayci is nothing like Cassie...
