to wonder if most people get up as soon as they wake up?

Just curious. I struggle to get enough sleep most nights, so that's part of the issue, but even when I do, I find it excruciating to get straight out of bed as part of me is invariably still in 'sleep' mode. (In particular, going straight from sleep to shower is hugely unpleasant, although part of that is down to sensory processing issues which mean I dislike the sensation of getting wet generally - I do still shower in spite of it, though, before anyone starts thinking I'm a soap-dodger. Grin ) This leads to me having to set alarms a bit earlier than I actually need to be up, which I know is barmy, but I would actually rather sacrifice 20 mins or so of sleep and work my way up to getting up a little more gently, than have to get out of bed the minute I wake up.

Anyone else the same?

I am like you OP. Waking up before I'm ready (I.e. to an alarm or children) is literally painful to me. I don't get the impression everyone experiences this. I need time to come around - I think it's like someone who's being diving having to come up bit by bit so they don't get the bends. I would also feel faint if I had to jump up.

We all experience things differently. It's definitely not just a q of self-discipline.

Shower in the morning is something I hate too. I also shower at night - also handy as I have shoulder length hair which needs to dry!

FriarTuck · 04/03/2019 17:07

I'll get up quickly if it's a day when I set the alarm, but the rest of the time I like to wake earlyish and then lie there cogitating for a good while, hoping that DDog stays in bed and doesn't get me up.

abcriskringle · 04/03/2019 17:08

Normally I get up straight away - alarm is set for the latest possible time so I maximise sleep! At the moment, however, I am pregnant and have morning sickness so have to take it a bit slower or I end up vomiting multiple times before work, which is no way to start the day.

ApolloandDaphne · 04/03/2019 17:08

My DH has to get out ofbed the moment he is awake. Unfortunately that can be working 4/5 am! He usually goes to the spare room to read or just goes to work very early. I on the other hand like to lie for at least 30 minutes with a cup of tea. Sadly i have not been able to train the dog to make my tea so I have to go do it myself!

Oblomov19 · 04/03/2019 17:11

I love being in bed. I can't understand why it would bug anyone else. Very odd! Hmm

BumbleBeee69 · 04/03/2019 17:19

my alarm is set for 04:15, my shifts begins at 05:30, I'm always awake 10 minutes before my alarm goes off, it annoys me Hmm

labazsisgoingmad · 04/03/2019 17:24

me and dp usually make love in the mornings so by time we finish i am awake and get up for a shower then begins the mad rush for the day

Lululemonade · 04/03/2019 17:24

When I worked I got up straight away and it used to bug me that my dh used the snooze button. Now I am a SAHM and I find it so hard to get out of bed. In my head I think I should get up and do some stretching and maybe a little exercise before my dd gets up but in reality I know she will be up before 7 anyway so I may as well stay in bed and doze!

origamiunicorn · 04/03/2019 17:27

OP I am completely with you on this, I am (to the annoyance of DP) a snoozer.

I am such a heavy sleeper that I take ages to come round, I also have a slight sleep problem in that I enter REM too soon so I'm all out of whack with my phases - sometimes resulting in me dreaming when I'm still awake but dropping off. (Which can be surreal let me tell you!) Because of this I take a while to wake up, so need at least half hour of snoozes before I can get up. (If DH is away though I set my alarm an hour before I need to get up!) Blush

I do too, I love that state between awake and sleep.

MrsCherry · 04/03/2019 17:44

Recently I have been trying to shower before bed (you could just wet your hair in the morning) so that when I wake up in the i can get on with the day. Last night I was exhausted and didn't shower. My day has been a mess! I set 2 alarms daily both out of reach of the bed. One is a bird song alarm that gradually gets louder and the other is a light that gradually lights up to try and wake me naturally (followed by an annoying bleep if I am not up before it goes off). I hate having a shower in the morning due to sensory issues, actually the idea of a shower any time of day is not great TBH, but I have to just do it and not think about it. I have a rheumatoid condition so have pain in the mornings as well. But the thing that has helped most is finding a routine and sticking to it, to remove the thoughts that lead to procrastination. And having the same bedtime and wake up whatever day it is.

fleshmarketclose · 04/03/2019 17:58

I am rubbish at sleep full stop but the minute I open my eyes I get straight out of bed whether that's quarter to five like today or six o clock like I usually do. Never ever needed an alarm.

Xenia · 04/03/2019 18:09

Now I don't have small children waking me I just try to get to bed about 10 or 11 and sleep as long as I need to and never use an alarm so it's all pretty easy. If I wake very early I just go back to sleep again. I tend to get up about 7 ish.

Jsmith99 · 04/03/2019 18:14

I’m not a morning person, at all, so I set my alarm for the latest possible time then get up immediately. If i didn’t, I would be late for work.

ASauvignonADay · 04/03/2019 18:19

Sometimes I snooze the alarm once, but do try and get up straight away. I go put the kettle on, go for a wee, go make tea and sit back in bed to drink it, then get up properly. I don't like just getting up and getting ready.

speakout · 04/03/2019 18:50

I always set my alarm for 30 minutes before I need to get up.

Immediately it goes off I get up, go downstairs, kettle on, feed cats and let them out, then take coffee back to bed, then check emails, orders ( I have an online business), News website etc.

By the time I am in the shower the caffeine has kicked in.

FiveLittlePigs · 04/03/2019 18:53

After years of early starts, I take great pleasure in laying in bed once I'm awake. Nice cuppa, phone to hand and warm duvet. Bliss.

CherryPavlova · 04/03/2019 18:57

I’m definitely an owl and not a lark. I really dislike getting straight up and showered. I do when I’m working in London or have early meetings but usually I wallow in bed until my husband (who is a lark) brings me tea. Then I can get up gently, ready for work about 8:30am.

SurgeHopper · 04/03/2019 19:00

I never snooze, ugh.

Get up and GO!

MattMagnolia · 04/03/2019 19:04

I’ve never used an alarm, I wake up long before I need to get up but can’t lie in bed so I get up immediately.
I hate being hurried so can always potter gently, enjoying time to myself before others get up.

ShannonRockallMalin · 04/03/2019 19:11

I can’t bear lying in bed after I’ve woken up. Always have to get up straight away. I used to make coffee and then shower, but the perimenopausal night sweats have put paid to that, I now have to get straight in the shower! I also hate eating in bed - the crumbs! - and have to grit my teeth and smile when I get the annual mother’s day breakfast in bed.

I am a morning person though and feel on the ball as soon as I’m awake. Come 9pm and I’m nodding off on the sofa.

Oysterbabe · 04/03/2019 19:14

I got one of those Lumi sunlight alarm clocks. I found waking up using light rather than sound made it much easier.

Gruffin · 04/03/2019 19:16

I like to get up early, 5:15 weekdays and around 6:30 on weekends. I wake up, get up and make coffee and snuggle up in the sofa corner. I love my mornings. Sometimes when I go to bed I wish it was morning again so I can get up and have my coffee again! Grin

OftenHangry · 04/03/2019 19:17

I get up immediately. Not going to pee in a deb, am I.
And once I am out, well no point going back 🤷‍♀️
Unless it's before 6AM.

MozzchopsThirty · 04/03/2019 19:26

Some weekends when dcs are with ex I will wake up, lie there for a bit, make breakfast & take it back to bed, have a nap, get up and have lunch take it back to bed, watch a film then get up about 5, have a bath, clean pjs then back in bed 🤣

I don't feel guilty at all, I get up every day for work
I love bed
