Just curious. I struggle to get enough sleep most nights, so that's part of the issue, but even when I do, I find it excruciating to get straight out of bed as part of me is invariably still in 'sleep' mode. (In particular, going straight from sleep to shower is hugely unpleasant, although part of that is down to sensory processing issues which mean I dislike the sensation of getting wet generally - I do still shower in spite of it, though, before anyone starts thinking I'm a soap-dodger. Grin ) This leads to me having to set alarms a bit earlier than I actually need to be up, which I know is barmy, but I would actually rather sacrifice 20 mins or so of sleep and work my way up to getting up a little more gently, than have to get out of bed the minute I wake up.

Anyone else the same?

I have alarms going off every 5 mins from 7am until 7.25am and I am out of the house by 7.45am. Literally takes me longer to get up then it does to get out. But I shower at night so all I need to do is brush my teeth and hair, wash my face and get dressed. I make coffee when I get to work and I have my breakfast and lunch stuff there too.

Some mornings I even get the slow cooker on before I leave the house.

Can you tell I don't have kids yet??

Frazzled2207 · 04/03/2019 15:56

No my snooze goes off several times. I actually get up about half an hour after my first alarm. My dh is the same. We don't have very rushed mornings though as dh works from home and I only start work once kids dispatched to school.

bringincrazyback · 04/03/2019 15:57

I am unable to function if I get up straight away. All elbows and knees, dizziness, confusion/brain fog, pain, grumpiness and just general disorientation if I try to do much before that hour. And believe me I have tried everything over the years!

I could have written that word for word and can thoroughly empathise!

@BabyDarlingDollfaceHoney
You are an inspiration. I am going to try your (and my dad's) method tomorrow and see if it works.

Justamemory · 04/03/2019 15:59

My logic is that I would rather have an extra 30mins of proper sleep than set alarms every 5mins. So I've always set my alarm at the last possible moment. I can't just lie there, I get bored and start thinking of everything I need to do.

Damntheman · 04/03/2019 16:01

I get up straight away because if I don't do that I know I won't get up at all ;) I love sleeping! Multiple alarms drive me batty, I hate being woken right after I've fallen asleep so why do that to myself five times in a row?

YogaWannabe · 04/03/2019 16:01

On the odd occasion I don’t have to get up, I could lob and laze in bed for hours! Happily!

AnxietyDream · 04/03/2019 16:08

I am the same. My DH never understands why I set my alarm for 7, but don't actually get out of bed until 7:30 (for example). But I need that time to mentally wake up.

I can't do snooze buttons etc, though, or I oversleep. I have to read to keep myself awake until I am ready to get out of bed.

Sparklesocks · 04/03/2019 16:13

I snooze my alarm for 10 minutes but then I get up once it goes off again. I have to or I never would. It’s a bit sad but I literally swing my legs over the edge of the bed and almost JUMP out to get me going. And then I get straight in the shower to properly wake up.
Non work days though? Sleep city! I will sit in bed for ages..

Slowknitter · 04/03/2019 16:24

I get out of bed straight away at 7 when my alarm goes off on week days no problem, and am usually awake before the alarm. I don't feel groggy, foggy or grumpy. I go to bed at 10.30, read until 11. My sleep is a bit less reliable these days (perimenopause related, I suspect), but I still have no problem getting up.

BlackInk · 04/03/2019 16:35

I get up pretty much straight away when the alarm goes off at 6:30am. I stumble downstairs and make a cup of tea for me and DP. Whilst the kettle boils I pack my bag for work and get breakfast things out for DC, who are early risers and always up snaffling around for food by this time....
Then I go back to bed with my cup of tea for at least 20 minutes! By the time I've finished it I feel almost human :)
I drive DP mad but it's a little oasis of luxury and laziness for me that gets me through the day!

Interesting to see someone like me. I am exactly the same in terms of sensory issues. I shower in the evening instead.

I set my alarm for about 45 minutes before I actually have to get up.

CassandraAttheWedding · 04/03/2019 16:43

Stevie There's a world out there with exciting things going on
See, I think if there were exciting things I would have jumped out of bed(possibly), but since my morning usually starts with getting the kids ready, anything which is happening in my head is more exciting than what's awaiting me.
Multiple snooze for me. Sometimes I have a dream where days passed and lots of stuff happens in the ten minutes between the snoozes, which is cool.
On days off try to stay in bed as long as possible. But I've never ever been a morning person anyway. If I did need to help myself wake up properly, hot shower would help me rather than the opposite.

Eliza9917 · 04/03/2019 16:47

If I want to get up at 7 I set alarms for 6, 6.30, 6.45 & 7.

ScreamingValenta · 04/03/2019 16:49

I get up as soon as my alarm goes off on working days.

At weekends, I turn over and have another sleep.

scaryteacher · 04/03/2019 16:54

It depends. I have mornings when i wake up, am just right temperature wise and have no aches or pains, as I am warm. I lie there for about 15 minutes and luxuriate!

During the working week I have to be up as I like to cook dh some breakfast (he's a Type 2 diabetic, and if I cook him a breakfast with enough protein, it helps him), but I have been known to go back to my pit for an hour or so with a mug of tea. I am a trailing spouse so my time is my own.

questabellatreetop · 04/03/2019 16:56

Every year for my birthday, all I ever ask for is a day in bed. I love it so much I made up a song about it, it doesnt have many words but I sing it after I have been away for too long.

@3luckystars Please tell us your song!

Amortentia · 04/03/2019 16:57

I can’t stand being late on as soon as my alarm goes off I’m like the white rabbit from Alice in wonderland rushing about and get organised. Once I’m sure I’m on time then I can calm down and drink my tea before rushing off again.

Mmmhmmokdear · 04/03/2019 16:59

I get up as soon as my alarm goes off. I've never snoozed it in my whole life. I'm a morning person though, so it comes naturally to me!

BobLemon · 04/03/2019 17:00

The feeling of a warm bed in the morning is so lovely. We hardly ever get straight up, usually one of us will go make a cuppa then come back to bed to doze again till it’s cool enough to drink.

A friend told me they set their alarm extra early so they can get up, shower, and THEN get back into bed for an extra doze!

icanbewhatiwant · 04/03/2019 17:02

I set my alarm for 6.40am (mon-fri) but one of us usually gets up before, makes tea and brings it back up to bed. Then we watch the news.
About once a week we don't wake up and the alarm wakes me, in winter more often when it's cold and dark. I often keep pressing the snooze button.
I couldn't shower in the morning in winter though. Too cold!

grannycake · 04/03/2019 17:04

I used to be awful at getting up but about 5 years ago I put the alarm on a shelf the other side if the bedroom so I had to get up to switch it off. Now I wake before the alarm but I then go downstairs and make coffee and generally waste time on the internet until about 30 minutes until I have to leave

KinseyMilhone · 04/03/2019 17:05

I'm a snoozer. Alarm set for 5.35, 6.00 and 6.10! I like to wake up and then think I've got half an hour to snooze and just enjoy being warm and cosy . I HAVE to be up by 6.20 or I won't get everything done in time. I do wish I could get up earlier so I'm not always in such a rush but I just can't!

LouLou789 · 04/03/2019 17:05

Now I am almost 60, I don’t feel fully alert as soon as I wake (which I did when I was younger) So as soon as I am half awake now, I tend to get out of bed, switch the kettle on and get straight in the shower (as I know I will be no keener in an hour than I am currently) then potter back to the kettle, wrapped in towels, make a giant cup of tea, and take it back to bed, where I can stay for ages, nice and clean and half dressed, watching TV, reading or doing stuff on my phone until about 20 mins before I have to go to work, but that’s still not early, the earliest I leave is 8.40.

Nowisthemonthofmaying · 04/03/2019 17:06

I never use an alarm - really hate them! Normally if I have to be out early then I just get straight up, otherwise when I wake up I read for a bit, then I go downstairs and make dp & me a cuppa, bring it back up to drink in bed, then get up 'properly' after that.
