Smoking weed - what’s your take on it...

I don’t know much about it but on balance think it should probably be decriminalised. However, it is addictive and it obviously can have a negative impact on people’s lives and mental health. It does seem very prevalent around my part of London - I feel like I can smell it in the street all the time when I am out and about.

Funnily enough, I picked up this news today ... seems some US universities are gearing up for degrees in growing cannabis ... be nice to think some of the experts are British Grin ....

I know I'm late to the party with this reply but I have seen firsthand the effects of weed and what it does to you. I've had exes who smoked it, one of who got even more abusive and violent than already if he
had no money for weed and told me himself he couldn't calm down until he had a joint (and he didn't even smoke the stuff every day). We literally had to live off of that cheap corner shop 20 odd pence bag of pasta for a week or more as he used up all our money on getting weed. I've also lived in a student houseshare with friends and seen the effects it has had on them. Made them very snappy and aggressive if they had no weed, they would literally do anything to get some weed and one friend even threw something across the room narrowly hitting us in rage because they couldn't afford or tick any weed. In my experience it has made people very lazy, very grubby and unhygienic, very unmotivated, paranoid (extreme paranoia, especially in relationships when you have a slight disagreement and they explode at you and accuse you of all sorts) makes you bipolar, overreact, stupid (it's called 'dope' for a reason), made people drop out of jobs and get into risky situations like dealing to pay for their fix, so they will risk people robbing them and mixing into unpleasant crowds when drug dealing... I don't care what anyone says, weed is addictive. People who got paid spent all their money on weed in one go and were left with no money for food toiletries or other necessities.

Of course people will defend weed 'well it didn't do me no harm'. You can say that about anything. Some people on here snort coke every so often on a Saturday.. Doesn't mean they're a cokehead. Some people enjoy a cheeky Maccy D's every so often but it doesn't mean that they binge eat. Weed affects people differently as does alcohol.

To older people viewing this thread, you have to remember that weed these days is A) much much more stronger, and B) pumped full of all sorts of crap and mixed in with all sorts of bad stuff. If you have ever seen weed you will (obviously) know it has tons of little crystals on it which is the THC which makes you high. My friends have had a batch and glass was added to the weed that they got and disguised in with the crystals as when they were smoking the weed they felt sharp bits mixed in with it. The people who grow and reproduce the weed also pump it full of chemicals which makes people mentally unwell. If the government were in control of weed, they could control more what was going into the batches.

I think it should be legalized and the government can tax the weed, check what is going into the weed to cause less paranoia/schizo/manic/personality disorders.

But I've heard so many stories about weed and what it has done to people and I'm in my early 20's myself.

The thing is not all products with weed in it is bad. Cannabis oil has been proven to be useful, I've smoked cannabis and it has helped with muscle pain and it doesn't do much for me except the usual me which is giggly and hungry lol.

I also think that it is the background you come from. I don't mean to sound judgemental but some people smoke weed occasionally but they get decent weed off of a decent dealer and they smoke it on occasion, but still carry on with their lives and are successful, businessmen/women etc. And you have others who sit around all day on the dole chain smoking weed being so desperate and poor that they will get the potent crap stuff from the crappy dealers and usually people who smoke weed are the latter (I'm sorry if I offend, but let's be realistic here!). I stick to my point that cannabis is addictive and scientifically proven to cause long term mental health problems, but some people can use it in the right way and lead successful lives. It's impossible to tell what batch of weed you are really getting, it it is laced with anything and also every single bodies brain is different. Some can take weed and alcohol well and it not affect them, and others the weed can damage their head.. Especially if there are underlying issues going on before the weed.

I feel like many stoners act like they can't live without it and it is the be all and end all. They get very defensive about weed, deny that they have an addiction and make out it is a plant and natural so is harmless. It doesn't help that weed has been Bob Marlied into this innocent drug which makes everyone peace maaaan relaxed and creative. I find it very concerning how people defend weed so much because it's horses for courses as is alcohol. Like I said, some people can drink and handle it and others cannot.

Please nobody take my post to mean all stoners are bad people, I'm just putting across my personal experience with weed. I've met people who said that they quit because they knew that it wasn't doing them very good. This may be outing but a friend was smoking skunk and had a chronic skin condition.. They found that skunk aggravated their skin condition as well as other affects it caused them, so they cut down on skunk. That stuff is potent.

Bluerussian · 04/06/2019 00:48

No harm in moderation.

Nat6999 · 04/06/2019 01:09

I wish they would legalise it, for people like me who suffer chronic pain it would save us having to take so many painkillers. It would be great if users were allowed to grow a small amount, maybe 2-3 plants so they could grow strains that suited their conditions. I use CBD for pain & while it helps, being able to grow my own full spectrum plants would be so much better, I would know what I was getting, buying now is so risky as there is so much skunk about which has too many psychoactive properties to it & you never know what you are buying. Even my 80 year old mum is on CBD for her chronic arthritis now as it has less side effects than normal painkillers, it's just so expensive.

CoolCarrie · 04/06/2019 01:17

It does huge harm to mental health, especially those who have problems already , makes people lazy, paranoid and eventually can lead to serious mental health issues and crime, and the idea that it’s harmless is ridiculous! ! Those who say it’s harmless, Spend time in a mental health clinic and see how people are affected by it

stopgap · 04/06/2019 01:22

I’m in the US, and medical marijuana has given me my life back. I take a tincture rather than smoke it, and this is the only thing that has helped my autoimmune-related insomnia. When used in moderation, it’s incredibly beneficial—much like one nightly glass of red wine versus ten cans of Special Brew.

CoolCarrie · 04/06/2019 01:26

You are spot on OO1 !
A close friend of mine and her lovely children had to watch as her husband Was sectioned after his behaviour got worse and worse, then they had to move due to the embarrassment and distress he caused to their children, it was bloody awful and all down to what he was smoking, he was a lovely guy, but he truly went out of his mind and it’s taken years for him to get balanced out.

WarmthAndDepth · 04/06/2019 01:35

Having happily puffed my way through a very misspent youth, I am now of the opinion that supporting the trade in cannabis is massively socially irresponsible and that it's dissemination has negative impacts on communities and individuals.
I have come to realise that there is no substance that comes even close to rivalling the thrills, highs and richness of sobriety -I love my straight mind and body!

PregnantSea · 04/06/2019 01:46

I'm fine with it. It's not a big deal. Sure, some people can end up addicted to it, just like people get addicted to all sorts of things that are currently legal. I don't see that as a good basis for law making. From a medical point of view it's a very low risk drug.

If it's legal then we can at least try to stop kids from doing it by placing restrictions on it's purchase (I appreciate the restrictions don't entirely stop the problem but they do help). As long as criminals are the ones selling it with have no power over that. I remember my friends and I smoking a lot of weed when we were 14 just because we knew someone we could get it off and we had no chance of getting hold of alcohol. Once we turned 18 we all seemed to forget about the weed and just focused on going out drinking. Not that I'm saying that's healthier of course - just giving my own personal experience. I doubt I would have bothered with the weed if it had been legal and had an age limit because it would have been no easier to get hold of than alcohol, which is what we really wanted. I don't want my kids smoking weed when they are 14. I'd ideally like them to get into adulthood before they choose to do anything like that.

breakfastpizza · 04/06/2019 02:18

It's completely unreasonable to be exposed to it without your consent.

My cousin lives in a house divided into three flats in Toronto and they are now having to move after 5 years because the basement tenants smoke 24/7 and it wafts up the air ducting to their top floor flat. Landlord claims he can't do anything due to the new laws.

There is a family on the second floor of the same house, and their toddler and infant wake up choking on the smoke every night. They can't afford to move. How the fuck is that acceptable?

DeeCeeCherry · 04/06/2019 02:54

I'm fine with weed, there are much more harmful substances out there. I'm not a regular weed smoker, but I smoked weed when I was suffering badly with menopause symptoms. It took the edge of everything and got me through the horrible hot flushes stagem

However I HATE Skunk weed & refuse to be around anyone who smokes it. It stinks, and makes users lazy and paranoid. Slows their speech. Skunk weed is the mental health epidemic we never saw coming, and the cause of much violence and health crisis out there today but there doesn't tend to be much acknowledgement of that.

I know of parents at their wits end because their addicted to skunk teen wants to stay at home all day in an unwashed stinking mess, eating them out of house and home too. Skunk kills the motivation that way. You are better off smoking the "green" but skunk is cheap, hence attractive to youths, & adults who don't have spends

darkriver19886 · 04/06/2019 04:11

I hate it.

If it's to be legalised then it should be banned in public spaces. It smells good and makes me sick.

I know two people who smoke it on a recreational basis. One is extremely paranoid and I am worried about him and the other developed psychosis and was very unwell.

darkriver19886 · 04/06/2019 04:12

*good should be foul. Bloody auto correct.

e1y1 · 04/06/2019 04:45

Hate it, it's the smell it is probably the only smell (besides actual vomit) that can knock me instantly sick.

Also (I know I'm going to get flamed) any users of it I've known have always smelt well, dirty

And YY to the paranoia one particular person I know is extremely paranoid and lo and behold - a heavy user.

Everyone is free to do as they please, and I know there is growing evidence of it being beneficial for some medical uses, but please - in a pill (or anything where there is no smell given off ).

Did I mention the smell? 🤢

MaidenMotherCrone · 04/06/2019 05:28

No problem with it at all. Far less harmful to health/society than tobacco or alcohol. Unfortunately society has been conditioned to believe it's the devil and alcohol is acceptable.

IAmAlwaysLikeThis · 04/06/2019 05:46

I don't care what others do.

It's not for me as I hate the smell and I hate the feeling I get from smoking it.

It turns a lot of people into boring idiots who only talk about getting high and can't get through the day without it but you can say the same about drink.

I don't think it should be legalised because I really hate the smell in public places.

Prinstress · 04/06/2019 05:50

Wish there was an aisle full of strains in Tesco like there is alcohol.

bellinisurge · 04/06/2019 06:00

Smells. Bad for mental health. The industry in its production and distribution is foul.

kalinkafoxtrot45 · 04/06/2019 06:00

I’m of the opinion that people should be able to take it if they want to. But I don’t believe it’s harmless, I hate the smell of it and don’t want to be around it.

BasilTheGreat · 04/06/2019 06:25

I hate it. The smell of the smoke makes me nauseous. People who buy it help fuel criminals, modern day slavery, environmental issues and seem completely ignorant to where their money goes and the misery it causes.
You think it should be legal? OK go and lobby your cause, get involved in the politics. Buying the dug right now, when it’s illegal makes you complicit in these crimes.

Far2go46 · 04/06/2019 20:32

Not if you grow your own

Sparklesocks · 04/06/2019 20:37

I think in moderation it can be great, I have a relative with severe MS and it’s the only thing she’s found that helps manage her pain.

Additionally my DP went through a terrible period of insomnia - and despite trying a range of medication and medical advice it was the only thing that helped him drift off which he didn’t wake up from the next day feeling like he’d been hit by a lorry (like his medication did).

However I also think not everyone reacts well with it, some people become overly reliant on it and it can lead to paranoia and general lethargy.

JessieTalamasca · 04/06/2019 20:37

Think it should be entirely legalised. And definitely legal to grow your own.

DoxxedFox · 04/06/2019 20:41

Only people I’ve ever known that regularly used it have been depressive, lazy twats. But they’d probably be like that without it.

Pk37 · 04/06/2019 20:50

Hate it.
Had neighbours that smoked it all the time and it stunk my house out.
Also think the mental health problems it can cause are quite scary .
Cannabis oil? Fine as it has no impact on anyone else
