How can I be in the top 5% of drinkers at 20 units a week?!

I've been tracking how much alcohol I drink since the start of the year in an effort to cut down

It's working and I think I probably drink about half as much as I used to, around 20 units a week on average. Still over the women's recommended limit of 14, but this is better than I was

However the app I'm using says I'm in the top 5% of drinker so that means only 5 people out of 100 drink more than me

Surely that can't be right... how many unit do you drink a week usually?

2-3 units each month, though I often skip drinking for some months.

cocomelon23 · 03/03/2019 21:08

I barely drink. Maybe a glass on a Friday night once a month if that.

KitKat1985 · 03/03/2019 21:08

Probably have about 3 medium glasses of wine a week on average, which is abut 6 units I think.

ScarletBitch · 03/03/2019 21:09

20 units a week means you have a drink problem.

Villageidiots · 03/03/2019 21:09

Jeez I must live in a village of the 5%. 6 bottles a week here.

thesnapandfartisinfallible · 03/03/2019 21:10

I drink maybe 5 or 6 units a year. Literally I drink maybe twice a year. I have one or two at the work christmas party and one New Years Eve and New Years Day. I just don't like the taste and not keen on the feeling of being drunk either.

RusholmeRuffian · 03/03/2019 21:10

My partner drinks 4 sometimes 5 cans of beer a night, and will occasionally follow it with a Baileys or whatever’s on the shelf.

I’ve always wondered if this amount is ‘normal ‘ for men.

isseywithcats · 03/03/2019 21:11

im not much of a dinker my total achohol consumption this week has been a glass of bucks fizz and a rum and coke as i was at a charity ball last night i find as ive got older my tolerance to achohol has gone way down

WitsEnding · 03/03/2019 21:11

20 units is 2 bottles of my wine, in my 20s and 30s I would drink that on a night out and go to work the next day with no problems. Now it's the odd glass once a week and any more makes me feel tired and under the weather.

NerrSnerr · 03/03/2019 21:12

Before children I was easily drinking 20 units a week, most weeks. We'd usually have a bottle of wine on on weekend day for a few large g&ts and often have a night out where I'd have at least 4 pints. Id then have a pint if we ate out in the week.

I currently barely drink anything because my youngest doesn't sleep and I get tipsy if I bloody look at a can of cider. I'd like to enjoy a few glasses of wine again at the weekend when I get more sleep!!

OhJustElfOff · 03/03/2019 21:12

20 units doesn't sound like much to me at all over a whole week, genuinely surprised at most of the responses. I wouldn't consider myself a heavy drinker but at the weekends I suspect i put away at least 20-30 units despite not going out.

BlueSkiesLies · 03/03/2019 21:12

20 units a week means you have a drink problem

Hardly.

20 units:
Split a bottle of wine with a friend over dinner 2 nights a week.
Three large glasses of wine over Saturday evening.

Not what most people would call ‘a problem’

RedHatsDoNotSuitMe · 03/03/2019 21:12

I easily drink double what you drink, and I massively cut down about 18 months ago. Two years ago it was quadruple

So even now, I'm top 1 or 2%

Chin chin

happytobemrsg · 03/03/2019 21:13

I'd drink maybe once a month! Just not a big drinker.

Slowknitter · 03/03/2019 21:13

Used to drink quite a lot in my twenties and early thirties, but now have on average about 4 or 5 units a week.

I know everyone scoffs at the 'thimble of sherry MNers', but actually I think lots of people are drinking less these days, or at least trying to. It often makes heavier drinkers uncomfortable and defensive when they hear that most people drink less than them, so they make mocking remarks or claim everyone is lying. These threads do attract those on the extreme ends of the scale though.

GabsAlot · 03/03/2019 21:14

i thik thats alot as i dont drink-my dh can sink that a week though and not binge drinking either

BackforGood · 03/03/2019 21:15

I think the 40 units a week you used to drink suggests a serious problem.
In all honesty, I think people drinking 20 units a week, every week shows a worrying dependency.

It is interesting on these threads, how often people distrust folk saying they don't drink, or don't drink every week. I believe those who say they drink 1/2 a bottle of wine every night, why is it hard to believe those saying they have a couple of glasses a month ? Confused Or is it something to do with justifying to themselves that the amount they drink is actually more 'normal' than it really is?

Margot33 · 03/03/2019 21:16

None here.

Crockof · 03/03/2019 21:17

I'm with @redhatsdonotsuitme I think people lie, I know loads of people that drink 50+ every week. A bottle is 10 units on average, my job shows how much people drink and they are not "problem" drinkers

BlimeyCalmDown · 03/03/2019 21:17

About 30-45 ish depending on how much fun I'm having that week :)

Megan2018 · 03/03/2019 21:17

Normally 3 bottles of wine a week. None at the moment as pg!
I love wine. I don’t care if I’m top 1% tbh.

HarrysOwl · 03/03/2019 21:18

I have one or two drinks a month, at most.

Just not a drinker - I'm quite health conscious though, and I'd rather eat my calories, just personal preference.

cariadlet · 03/03/2019 21:18

I drank loads in my twenties and early thirties - hardly ever drank in the week (once I'd got past the student years and was working), but too much at the weekends.

I gave up when I was pregnant and have never really bothered with it since. I might have a couple of glasses of wine if I'm going out for a meal with friends, but just as likely to have juice. tbh I genuinely can't remember the last time I had a drink. It was probably some time last year.

boredboredboredboredbored · 03/03/2019 21:18

I don't drink that in a year. Alcohol is not and has never been part of my life. Chocolate however.....😭
